This is an excellent book that provides a much needed overview of
theoretical frameworks that help us understand the behavior of
family firms. This book will be invaluable as a resource to
doctoral students and researchers who are trying to analyze
decision making in family firms and the factors that shape
management processes in these organizations. The book is very
comprehensive in its coverage, addressing most major theoretical
frameworks that have recently been applied to examine phenomena
unique to family firms. These include, among others, organizational
ecology, behavioral theory, agency theory, behavioral agency
theory, and social identity theory. This book is a must read for
family business scholars.' - Luis Gomez-Mejia, University of Notre
Dame, US'A common criticism of family business as a field of study
is the lack of well-developed, theoretically grounded research.
This important book edited by Nordqvist, Melin, Waldkirch and
Kumeto promises to change this widely held view. The book brings
into focus important theoretical perspectives that have rich
implications for research on family firms. Well established and
emerging perspectives are covered in the book, highlighting
different debates that are likely to shape future scholarship in
the field. Chapters are easy to read and concepts as well as
theories are clearly explained and their usefulness is made
evident. I compliment the editors on a job well done in recognizing
the challenges of theorizing about family business and mapping out
the territory of tomorrow's research.' - Shaker A. Zahra,
University of Minnesota, US Family business has become an
increasingly studied field over the last decade and forms one of
the fastest growing research areas today. The uniqueness of family
business is the interaction between two systems: the family and the
firm, leading to specific characteristics that we rarely see in
other types of businesses. In order to understand the unique
interaction between these two systems, researchers have adopted a
diverse range of theories drawn from different fields. The
contributors to this volume provide a thorough discussion of 13
theoretical perspectives that have been used in family business
research. Each chapter introduces a theory, demonstrates its
previous application in family business research and offers
compelling ideas for future research that could contribute to both
the family business field and the original theory behind it. This
book aims to spark new insights for researchers and PhD students in
the field of family business, and is also a good introduction for
researchers who are new to the field. Policymakers and
practitioners will find this an enlightening resource.

The Value of Empathy explores various approaches to understanding
empathy and investigates its moral and practical role. The central
role of empathy in understanding others, and the need for it in our
social and inter-personal encounters, is widely acknowledged by
philosophers, social scientists and psychologists alike.
Discussions of empathy abound, not only in more specialised
academic publications, but also in traditional and social media.
Yet neither a clear understanding, nor a uniform definition of this
relatively new term is available. Indeed, one difficulty in
discussing empathy, in philosophy and beyond, is the profusion of
definitions; the difficulty is compounded by a lack of clarity in
the distinction between empathy and cognate concepts such as
sympathy and compassion. This book has two aims: Chapters 1–5
seek to address the dual concerns of the lack of clarity and
profusion of interpretations by suggesting new ways of approaching
the topic. The second aim of the book is to connect the more
abstract discussions of empathy with its normative functions.
Chapters 6–8 engage with the theoretical concerns relevant to the
ethics of empathy and raise interesting points about its
significance in ethical thought and action. The final four chapters
focus on the practical normative significance of empathy by
examining the connections between empathy, vulnerability and care
in circumstances of ill health. The chapters in this book were
originally published in the International Journal of Philosophical
Studies.
Dance Legacies of Scotland compiles a collage of references
portraying percussive Scottish dancing and explains what influenced
a wide disappearance of hard-shoe steps from contemporary Scottish
practices. Mats Melin and Jennifer Schoonover explore the
historical references describing percussive dancing to illustrate
how widespread the practice was, giving some glimpses of what it
looked and sounded like. The authors also explain what influenced a
wide disappearance of hard-shoe steps from Scottish dancing
practices. Their research draws together fieldwork, references from
historical sources in English, Scots, and Scottish Gaelic, and
insights drawn from the authors' practical knowledge of dances.
They portray the complex network of dance dialects that existed in
parallel across Scotland, and share how remnants of this vibrant
tradition have endured in Scotland and the Scottish diaspora to the
present day. This book will be of interest to scholars and students
of Dance and Music and its relationship to the history and culture
of Scotland.
Tango and the Dancing Body in Istanbul explores the expansion of
social Argentine tango dancing among Muslim actors in Turkey,
pioneered in Istanbul despite the conservative rule of the Justice
and Development Party (JDP) and Tayyip Erdogan. In this book, Melin
Levent Yuna questions why a dance that appears to publicly
represent an erotic relationship finds space to expand and increase
dramatically in the number of contemporary Turkish Muslim tango
dancers, particularly during a conservative rule. Even during the
2020 Covid-19 pandemic, tango dance classes, gatherings, and
messages flourished on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Zoom.
Urban Turkey and its tango dance performances provide one symbol
and example of how neoliberal capitalism could go hand in hand with
conservatism by becoming a bridge between Europe and the Middle
East. This study largely focuses on the dancers' perspective while
presenting the policies of Erdogan. It presents the social
characteristics of the tango dancers, the meanings they attach to
their bodies and their dance as well as what this dance reflects
about them - besides the policies of the Justice and Development
Party. The book approaches the tango dance and its dancing body in
terms of layers of meaning systems in a neoliberal and conservative
context. This study will be of great interest to students and
scholars in dance, anthropology, cultural studies, and performance
studies.

There has been much debate over the idea of 'the information society'. Some thinkers have argued that information is becoming the key ordering principle in society, whereas others suggest that the rise of information has been overstated. Whatever the case, though, it cannot be denied that 'informization' has produced vast changes in advanced societies. The Information Society Reader pulls together the main contributions to this debate from some of the key figures in the field. Major topics addressed include:
· post-industrialism · surveillance · transformations · the network society · democracy · digital divisions · virtual relations.
With a comprehensive introduction from Frank Webster, and section introductions contextualising the readings, The Information Society Reader will be an invaluable resource for students and academics studying contemporary society and all things cyber.
Includes selections from Manuel Castells, Daniel Bell, Anthony Giddens, Michel Foucault and Christopher Lasch, amongst others.
Bullying prevention is a priority for all who work with our youth
in our schools, parks, organizations, and athletic fields. Tackling
Bullying in Athletics will help athletic directors, coaches,
parents, and all those who help youth enjoy the benefits of sports
by detailing how they can provide a bully-free playing field and
promote sportsmanship and character. The athletic field with all
its triumphs is an area where bullying can occur, and these
behaviors may have devastating consequences. The easy-to-read
format and solid practical advice provide the guidelines and best
practices to coach with success and provide a winning environment
for everyone. The eight best practices compliment and parallel the
school efforts that should be organized to prevent bullying.
Everyone involved with the care and welfare of children and young
adults is confronted with the issue of bullying, which is one of
life's major pressures facing children. Bullying behaviors create
an uncomfortable, threatening, and even hostile environment that
make it difficult for children to learn. 101 Facts about Bullying
is designed to break down what the research says about bullying and
its effects, offering ideas for what can and should be done to
minimize or reduce it. Kevorkian systematically discusses topics
ranging from relational bullying to cyber bullying to media and
video violence to the legal ramifications of bullying, debunking
myth and uncloaking the facts about bullying and its prevention.

This book explores sacrifice as a narrative theme and a stylistic
strategy in works by May Sinclair, Mary Butts and H. D. It argues
that the modernist experiment with pronoun use informs the
treatment of acts of sacrifice in the texts, understood both as
acts of self-renunciation and as ritual performance. It also
suggests that sacrifice, if the conditions are right, can serve as
the structure upon which a cohesive community might be built. The
book offers in-depth analyses of the three authors and their works,
deftly dissecting the modernist narrative experiment to show that
it was by no means limited — it was a means by which to approach
a wide range of stories and materials.
These authors use soft computing techniques and fractal theory in
this new approach to mathematical modeling, simulation and control
of complexion-linear dynamical systems. First, a new fuzzy-fractal
approach to automated mathematical modeling of non-linear dynamical
systems is presented. It is illustrated with examples on the PROLOG
programming language. Second, a new fuzzy-genetic approach to
automated simulation of dynamical systems is presented. It is
illustrated with examples in the MATLAB programming language.
Third, a new method for model-based adaptive control using a
neuro-fussy fractal approach is combined with the methods mentioned
above. This method is illustrated with MATLAB. Finally,
applications of these new methods are presented, in the areas such
as biochemical processes, robotic systems, manufacturing, food
industry and chemical processes.
Now more than ever, bullying has become common among students in
American schools and playgrounds. According to the U.S. Justice
Department, one in four children is bullied every day. As a result
of these incidents, children may suffer from anxiety, depression,
or low self-esteem. Preventing Bullying was written for today's
parents and teachers who are looking for ways to battle the
continual exposure to school violence that may leave students
desensitized to 'mean' behavior. Easy to understand and implement,
this book encourages students to put themselves in someone else's
shoes and recognize the difference between right and wrong in
social situations. Each chapter contains advice, practical tips,
examples, and activities to help students form healthy
relationships in school. Issues included are: _

Ancient epistolary fiction is a still largely under-explored field
of research, at the intersection of studies on epistolography and
on pseudepigraphy. The present volume sketches out a broad panorama
of ancient fiction in letters. It covers a large period of time up
to late Antiquity, with a main focus on letters from the imperial
era. Epistolary fiction is examined as a mainly Greek phenomenon
(there are few Latin equivalents) that was characteristic of both
pagan and Christian literature. The material investigated falls
within two categories: fictional letter collections from well-known
authors of the Second Sophistic and their successors (Lucian,
Alciphron, Philostratus, Aristaenetus); letters attributed to
famous historical or legendary characters (pseudonymous letters).
Focusing on the specific features of epistolary fiction, the book
aims to analyse its forms, its functions as well as its effects. It
gathers a series of 11 state-of-the art essays, all tackling the
same important issues: the manuscript and printed tradition, the
form of epistolary fictions and the universe they build, the
arrangement of the letters and their overall structure, the
relation between the author and his external readers.
