Elwyn Berlekamp, John Conway, and Richard Guy wrote 'Winning Ways for your Mathematical Plays' and turned a recreational mathematics topic into a full mathematical fi eld. They combined set theory, combinatorics, codes, algorithms, and a smattering of other fi elds, leavened with a liberal dose of humor and wit. Their legacy is a lively fi eld of study that still produces many surprises. Despite being experts in other areas of mathematics, in the 50 years since its publication, they also mentored, talked, and played games, giving their time, expertise, and guidance to several generations of mathematicians. This volume is dedicated to Elwyn Berlekamp, John Conway, and Richard Guy. It includes 20 contributions from colleagues that refl ect on their work in combinatorial game theory.

Basic Analytic Number Theory (Hardcover): A.A. Karatsuba Basic Analytic Number Theory (Hardcover)
A.A. Karatsuba; Translated by Melvyn B Nathanson
R2,464 Discovery Miles 24 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an introduction to four central problems in analytic number theory. These are (1) the problem of estimating the number of integerpoints in planar domains (2) the problem of the distribution of prime numbers in the sequence of all natural numbers and in arithmetic progressions (3) Goldbach's problem on sums of primes, and (4) Waring's problem on sums of k-th powers. To solve these problems, one uses the fundamental methods of analytic number theory: complex integration, I.M.Vinogradov's method of trigonometric sums, and the circle method of G.H.Hardy, J.E.Littlewood, and S.Ramanujan. There are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter. These exercises either refine the theorems proved in the text, or lead to new ideas in number theory. The author also includes a section of hints for the solution of the exercises. The mathematical prerequisites for this volume are undergraduate courses in number theroy, mathematical analysis, and complex variables. The book would be an excellent text for a one or two semester course in analytic number theory for advanced undergraduates or graduate students.

Additive Number Theory: Inverse Problems and the Geometry of Sumsets (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Melvyn B Nathanson Additive Number Theory: Inverse Problems and the Geometry of Sumsets (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Melvyn B Nathanson
R2,627 Discovery Miles 26 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Many classical problems in additive number theory are direct problems, in which one starts with a set "A" of natural numbers and an integer "H -> 2," and tries to describe the structure of the sumset "hA" consisting of all sums of "h" elements of "A." By contrast, in an inverse problem, one starts with a sumset "hA," and attempts to describe the structure of the underlying set "A." In recent years there has been ramrkable progress in the study of inverse problems for finite sets of integers. In particular, there are important and beautiful inverse theorems due to Freiman, Kneser, Plunnecke, Vosper, and others. This volume includes their results, and culminates with an elegant proof by Ruzsa of the deep theorem of Freiman that a finite set of integers with a small sumset must be a large subset of an "n"-dimensional arithmetic progression.

Elementary Methods in Number Theory (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Melvyn B Nathanson Elementary Methods in Number Theory (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Melvyn B Nathanson
R2,515 Discovery Miles 25 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Elementary Methods in Number Theory begins with "a first course in number theory" for students with no previous knowledge of the subject. The main topics are divisibility, prime numbers, and congruences. There is also an introduction to Fourier analysis on finite abelian groups, and a discussion on the abc conjecture and its consequences in elementary number theory. In the second and third parts of the book, deep results in number theory are proved using only elementary methods. Part II is about multiplicative number theory, and includes two of the most famous results in mathematics: the Erdös-Selberg elementary proof of the prime number theorem, and Dirichlets theorem on primes in arithmetic progressions. Part III is an introduction to three classical topics in additive number theory: Warings problems for polynomials, Liouvilles method to determine the number of representations of an integer as the sum of an even number of squares, and the asymptotics of partition functions. Melvyn B. Nathanson is Professor of Mathematics at the City University of New York (Lehman College and the Graduate Center). He is the author of the two other graduate texts: Additive Number Theory: The Classical Bases and Additive Number Theory: Inverse Problems and the Geometry of Sumsets.

This basic introduction to number theory is ideal for those with no previous knowledge of the subject. The main topics of divisibility, congruences, and the distribution of prime numbers are covered. Of particular interest is the inclusion of a proof for one of the most famous results in mathematics, the prime number theorem. With many examples and exercises, and only requiring knowledge of a little calculus and algebra, this book will suit individuals with imagination and interest in following a mathematical argument to its conclusion.

[Hilbert's] style has not the terseness of many of our modem authors in mathematics, which is based on the assumption that printer's labor and paper are costly but the reader's effort and time are not. H. Weyl [143] The purpose of this book is to describe the classical problems in additive number theory and to introduce the circle method and the sieve method, which are the basic analytical and combinatorial tools used to attack these problems. This book is intended for students who want to lel?Ill additive number theory, not for experts who already know it. For this reason, proofs include many "unnecessary" and "obvious" steps; this is by design. The archetypical theorem in additive number theory is due to Lagrange: Every nonnegative integer is the sum of four squares. In general, the set A of nonnegative integers is called an additive basis of order h if every nonnegative integer can be written as the sum of h not necessarily distinct elements of A. Lagrange 's theorem is the statement that the squares are a basis of order four. The set A is called a basis offinite order if A is a basis of order h for some positive integer h. Additive number theory is in large part the study of bases of finite order. The classical bases are the squares, cubes, and higher powers; the polygonal numbers; and the prime numbers. The classical questions associated with these bases are Waring's problem and the Goldbach conjecture.

This volume is dedicated to Harvey Cohn, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at City College (CUNY). Harvey was one of the organizers of the New York Number Theory Seminar, and was deeply involved in all aspects of the Seminar from its first meeting in January, 1982, until his retirement in December, 1995. We wish him good health and continued hapiness and success in mathematics. The papers in this volume are revised and expanded versions of lectures delivered in the New York Number Theory Seminar. The Seminar meets weekly at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York (CUNY). In addition, some of the papers in this book were presented at a conference on Combinatorial Number Theory that the New York Number Theory Seminar organized at Lehman College (CUNY). Here is a short description of the papers in this volume. The paper of R. T. Bumby focuses on "elementary" fast algorithms in sums of two and four squares. The actual talk had been accompanied by dazzling computer demonstrations. The detailed review of H. Cohn describes the construction of modular equations as the basis of studies of modular forms in the one-dimensional and Hilbert cases.
