The first comprehensive overview of Chloe's collections presented
through catwalk photography, published in collaboration with Chloe
to celebrate the house's 70th anniversary in 2022. Founded by
Egyptian-born Gaby Aghion in 1952, Chloe pioneered luxury
ready-to-wear that was all about ease and femininity, offering an
elegant haute bohemian style for the modern, liberated Parisienne.
Resolutely contemporary, the house spotted and hired a young Karl
Lagerfeld as early as the 1960s: he stayed for over two decades,
achieving fame and recognition worldwide through his Chloe work,
before Stella McCartney (and her then assistant Phoebe Philo)
succeeded him straight out of fashion school. This definitive
publication opens with a concise history of the house of Chloe
before exploring the collections themselves, which are organized
chronologically. Each new era in Chloe's history opens with a brief
overview and biography of the new designer, while individual
collections are introduced by a short text unveiling their
influences and highlights, and illustrated with carefully curated
catwalk images. A rich reference section, including an extensive
index, concludes the book. After Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Yves
Saint Laurent, Prada, Vivienne Westwood and Versace, Chloe is the
eighth in a series of high-end, cloth-bound books that offer an
unrivalled overview of the collections of the world's top fashion
houses through original catwalk photography.
From Azzedine Alaïa, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Coco Chanel to
Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, and Vivienne Westwood, more
than a century’s worth of fashion greats are celebrated in this
new edition of Fashion Designers A–Z. An accessibly priced and
updated volume features photographs of hundreds of garments
selected from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) museum's
permanent collection. Elegant gowns from the turn of the century,
Mondrian-style minimalist chic, and everything inbetween. Each of
these works of art is chosen not only for its beauty but also for
exemplifyingthe unique philosophy, skill, and aesthetics of each of
the featured designers. In her introductory essay, the museum’s
director and chief curator, Valerie Steele, writes about the rise
of the fashion museum and the emergence of the fashion exhibition
as a popular and controversial phenomenon. The foreword is
contributed by international style maven Suzy Menkes, texts by the
museum’s curators help shine historical light on each label and
garment pictured, and beautifully drawn portraits by the artist
Robert Nippoldt pay homage to the creators behind them.
Parallax, or the change in the position of an object viewed along
two different lines of sight and more precisely, the assumption
that this adjustment is not only due to a change of focus, but a
change in that object's ontological status has been a key
philosophical concept throughout history. Building upon Slavoj
Zizek's The Parallax View, this volume shows how parallax is used
as a figure of thought that proves how the incompatibility between
the physical and the theoretical touches not only upon the
ontological, but also politics and aesthetics. With articles
written by internationally renowned philosophers such as Frank
Ruda, Graham Harman, Paul Livingston and Zizek himself, this book
shows how modes of parallax remain in numerous modern theoretical
disciplines, such as the Marxian parallax in the critique of
political economy and politics; and the Hegelian parallax in the
concept of the work of art, while also being important to debates
surrounding speculative realism and dialectical materialism.
Spanning philosophy, parallax is then a rich and fruitful concept
that can illuminate the studies of those working in epistemology,
ontology, German Idealism, political philosophy and critical
theory.
'A photographic encyclopaedia of one of the 20th century's greatest
creators' The Business of Fashion Founded by Yves Saint Laurent and
Pierre Berge in 1961, shortly after the young couturier left his
post at the helm of Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent would soon
become one of the most successful and influential haute couture
houses in Paris. Introducing Le Smoking, the first tuxedo suit for
women, in 1966, Saint Laurent also presented iconic art-inspired
creations, from Mondrian dresses to precious Van Gogh embroidery
and the famous Ballets Russes collection. This definitive
publication opens with a concise history of the house, followed by
a brief biographical profile of Yves Saint Laurent, before
exploring the collections themselves, organized chronologically.
Each collection is introduced by a short text unveiling its
influences and highlights, and illustrated with a gallery of
carefully curated catwalk images. These showcase hundreds of
spectacular clothes, details, accessories, beauty looks and set
designs - and, of course, the top fashion models who wore them on
the runway. A rich reference section concludes the book.
The central character, Emily, writes the book's introduction from
the Other Side. In Paradise, her nerves and body restored, she
directs the reader to her "files," the universe's akashic memory
bank of her last years on earth. These files contain
information/stories on the nature of reality; human origins, and
eerie discoveries in science and consciousness. Emily is the first
of a new kind of human, and she is able to break barriers that keep
us in illusion. This work will appeal to readers of visionary
fiction, metaphysics, the mysteries, new age, new science, comedy
and art sensibilities.
First book to offer a guide to the foundations of the XFEM and its
implementation A revolution similar to that initiated by the FEM is
taking place through the XFEM, which is already implemented in
leading commercial packages (ABAQUS, ANSYS, etc.) that are taught
at undergraduate and post-graduate levels and to industrial
end-users. XFEM provides a detailed overview of the basics around
the newly introduced extended finite element method for
applications in solving moving boundary problems. XFEM is
introduced naturally as an extension of FEM, through simple one
dimensional examples which then allow the introduction of
higher-dimensional problems. Throughout the book, each key concept
is highlighted by the corresponding piece of MATLAB code which is
provided via an accompanying web portal. Uniquely, this portal
allows readers to obtain real-time feedback and help from an
existing community of more than 130 researchers and industrialists.
Demystifies the theory behind XFEM and makes it accessible to all
with previous knowledge of the FEM Provides a simple introduction
to XFEM but also provides a range of tools which the reader can
build upon to take on a large breadth of more complex problems.
Presents each key theoretical concept in parallel with its
implementational aspects in the form of simple MATLAB routines
provided along with the book via an interactive companion website
and portal Provides a detailed account of applications of XFEM to
fracture mechanics, including techniques absent from current
literature
A practical and innovative guide to emphasizing literacies
development when teaching world languages Literacies in Language
Education introduces multiliteracies pedagogy, which focuses on
critical engagement with texts, intercultural understanding, and
language proficiency development. Kate Paesani and Mandy Menke,
seasoned workshop leaders and multiliteracies scholars, define what
the approach is, its benefits, and how to create curricula grounded
in it. In addition, they explain how to use the approach at all
levels of language education and offer ideas for teacher
professional development—each key components of pedagogical
change. Melding text- and language-oriented learning goals, the
authors embrace an expanded understanding of literacy to capture
the dynamism of language and its contexts of use; the importance of
preparing students to interact with the range of texts they will
encounter in their academic, workplace, and personal lives; and the
multicultural and multilingual landscape of secondary and
postsecondary language classrooms. Literacies in Language Education
presents teachers with a tested approach for increasing learners’
proficiency and cultural awareness, along with practical
implementation methods. This book provides teachers and program
administrators with immediate steps to take toward designing and
implementing a literacies approach in any language class and
curriculum. Published in partnership with CARLA.
For most college athletes, the end of their athletic career comes
when their college eligibility runs out. While some college
athletes will move seamlessly from being a college athlete to a
career professional, many others struggle to adjust to life without
sports. This book fills a gap in the sport retirement literature
and adds to our understanding of what it means to leave sport.
Steeped in scholarly literature and narrative inquiry research, the
book reveals the complexity of a strong athletic identity developed
over years of sport participation. Through narratives of former
college athletes readers gain a deeper understanding of the
emotions and challenges caused by leaving sports participation
behind. The final chapters of the book provide strategies to
improve the transition out of sport for college athletes. This book
is useful for graduate programs that prepare academic advisors to
work with college athletes or sports management programs with a
course on intercollegiate athletic environments. The book is also
useful reading for counselors, academic advisors, coaches, and
parents of athletes at all levels of sport participation.
Martin Margiela, known for his avant-garde ideas and cult
following, became the arbiter of all things classic French Chic.
His ability to apply his unique design process to vastly different
fashion houses is the hallmark of a great designer. This new
edition of Margiela. The Hermes Years has been published with the
cooperation of the reclusive Margiela himself, including
never-before-published photographs, drawings and testimonies.

In response to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, governments
and international institutions took steps to contain the harmful
consequences on citizens' lives and health, as well as the economy.
In the short term, the goal was to limit the spread of the virus
and the effects of the restrictions on the economy and, in the
longer run, to prevent the appearance of new cases, facilitate the
end of social restrictions, reboot the economy, and return to a
path of sustainable growth and development. This is an economic and
legal exploration of the impact of the pandemic, in the Polish
context, examining Polish society and the economy as well as the
response of the Polish authorities to the pandemic. The choice of
Poland as the subject of the research is justified by its
specificity. On the one hand, Poland is a country undergoing
systemic transformation with access to European and transatlantic
institutions. On the other hand, in recent years, it has evolved
towards a hybrid democracy and is currently diverging away from the
EU project. The book presents Poland's legal and institutional
response to the pandemic, analysed through the prism of common
European values and Poland's international commitments. It
signposts the financial solutions adopted by the EU in the
aftermath of the outbreak to assess how they will be used in
combatting the short and longer-term consequences of the pandemic
in Poland. The book is an introduction to original research, shaped
by the novelty of the subject matter, and as such, will be
essential reading for students and researchers of economics, law,
and international relations.
The final word on what traits make for highly successful
managers--and a detailed explanation of how to identify potential
standout performers.
Executive Intelligence is about the substance behind great
leadership. Inspired by the work of Peter Drucker and Jim Collins,
Justin Menkes set out to isolate the qualities that make for the
'right' people. Drawing on his background in psychology and
bolstered by interviews with accomplished CEOs, Menkes paints the
portrait of the ideal executive.
In a sense, Menkes's work reveals an executive IQ--the cognitive
skills necessary in order to excel in senior management positions.
Star leaders readily differentiate primary priorities from
secondary concerns; they identify flawed assumptions; they
anticipate the different needs of various stakeholders and how they
might conflict with one another; and they recognise the underlying
agendas of individuals in complex exchanges.
Weaving together research, interviews and the results of his own
proprietary testing, Menkes exposes one of the great fallacies of
corporate life, that hiring and promotion are conducted on a
systematic or scientific basis that allows the most accomplished to
rise to their levels of optimal responsibility.
Finally, Menkes is a passionate advocate for finding and
employing the most talented people, especially those who may have
been held back by external assumptions.
Multilateralism has served as a foundation for international
cooperation over the past several decades. Championed after the
Second World War by the United States and Western Europe, it
expanded into a broader global system of governance with the end of
the Cold War. Lately, an increasing number of States appear to be
disappointed with the existing multilateral arrangements, both at
the level of norms and that of institutions. The great powers see
unilateral and bilateral strategies, which maximize their political
leverage rather than diluting it in multilateral fora, as more
effective ways for controlling the course of international affairs.
The signs of the crisis have been visible for some time - but
recent crises indicate an acceleration of the on-going
disintegration of the multilateral system, such as Brexit, growing
resistance on the part of States to international monitoring of
compliance and the radical change in the US foreign policy during
the presidency of Donald Trump which saw the US withdraw from
several multilateral agreements (e.g. the Iran Nuclear Deal and the
Paris Agreement), leave some international organizations or bodies
(e.g. the United Nations Human Rights Council or the World Health
Organization) or paralyze some others (e.g. the World Trade
Organization (WTO)). Tackling the debate surrounding the crisis of
multilateralism and the related transformation of the underlying
international legal order, The Crisis of Multilateral Legal Order
analyzes selected aspects of the current crisis from the
perspective of public international law to identify the nature of
the crisis, its dynamics, and implications.
From chatelaines to whale blubber, ice making machines to stained
glass, this six-volume collection will be of interest to the
scholar, student or general reader alike - anyone who has an urge
to learn more about Victorian things. The set brings together a
range of primary sources on Victorian material culture and
discusses the most significant developments in material history
from across the nineteenth century. The collection will demonstrate
the significance of objects in the everyday lives of the Victorians
and addresses important questions about how we classify and
categorise nineteenth-century things. This collection brings
together a range of primary sources on Victorian material and
culture. This third volume, 'Invention and Technology', will look
at a variety of Victorian inventions, both foundational and
short-lived.

Christoph Menke is a third-generation Frankfurt School theorist,
and widely acknowledged as one of the most interesting philosophers
in Germany today. His lead essay focuses on the fundamental
question for legal and political philosophy: the relationship
between law and violence. The first part of the essay shows why and
in what precise sense the law is irreducibly violent; the second
part establishes the possibility of the law becoming
self-reflectively aware of its own violence. The volume contains
responses by Maria del Rosario Acosta Lopez, Daniel Loick,
Alessandro Ferrara, Ben Morgan, Andreas Fischer-Lescano and
Alexander Garcia Duttmann. It concludes with Menke's reply to his
critics. -- .
