Capitalism, Inclusive Growth, and Social Protection - Inherent Contradiction or Achievable Vision?: Hagen M. Krämer, Christian... Capitalism, Inclusive Growth, and Social Protection - Inherent Contradiction or Achievable Vision?
Hagen M. Krämer, Christian Proaño, Mark R. Setterfield
R3,391 Discovery Miles 33 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

After more than four decades of real income stagnation, ever-increasing inequality and household financial distress, this book explores how the very fabric of our society is under threat. It argues that although capitalism is imperfect, it can be improved, and harnessing its forces of production to more suitable social relations of production is key to that improvement. Highlighting the concept of ‘social capitalism’ and ensuring that it is consistent with our underlying theoretical vision of how capitalism works, chapters address the need for an alternative theory of economic policy-making by combining elements of Marx, Keynes and Schumpeter (MKS). Applying their emphasis on distributive conflicts, effective demand and innovation, the MKS system provides an in-depth description of capitalist dynamics and how they reflect observed capitalist history. Based on this approach, Capitalism, Inclusive Growth, and Social Protection suggests that an unregulated capitalistic system is inherently unstable, generates social inequality and is ultimately unviable. This comprehensive book is an excellent resource for scholars concerned with alternatives to prevailing economics who wish to examine more intensively the current problems of capitalism. The analysis will also be of great value to policy makers and representatives of civil society.

An Archaeology of the Turkish War of Independence - Landscape and Time (Hardcover): Ömer Can Aksoy An Archaeology of the Turkish War of Independence - Landscape and Time (Hardcover)
Ömer Can Aksoy
R3,838 Discovery Miles 38 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is about the conflict which resolved the Greek–Turkish War of 1919–1922: the Great Offensive. On 26 August 1922, the army of the GNA executed the Great Offensive against the Greek defence line extending from the Bay of Gemlik to the Meander River. The Turkish Forces split the Greek Army into two large groups, annihilated one of the groups in the field at the Battle of Dumlupınar on 30 August and pursued the remaining forces of the Greek Army towards the Aegean and Marmara coasts until 18 September. Within these 24 days, the face of Western Anatolia changed unalterably: numerous towns, villages and cities of Western Anatolia were reduced to ashes. This conflict was a turning point in the histories of Turkey and Greece, as it played a significant role in shaping the present-day demographic and geopolitical landscapes of both nations. It resulted in a population exchange in 1923 that dramatically altered the lives of Muslims in Greece and Greek Orthodox people in Turkey and paved the way to the foundation of the Republic of Turkey. Despite the outcome of this war and the existence of a rich literature on its military and political history, the landscapes, memoryscapes and material culture have not been systematically investigated. This book bridges that gap via an archaeological, historical and oral-historical study of the Great Offensive and its aftermath. With its wide chronological perspective, this book is not a pure analysis of a historical war, it is instead a journey into the foundation myth of the Turkish Republic and the ideological foundations of the Turkish state.

Totemism and Human-Animal Relations in West Africa (Paperback): Sharon Merz Totemism and Human-Animal Relations in West Africa (Paperback)
Sharon Merz
R1,229 Discovery Miles 12 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores human-animal relations amongst the Bebelibe of West Africa, with a focus on the establishment of totemic relationships with animals, what these relationships entail and the consequences of abusing them. Employing and developing the concepts of "presencing" and "the ontological penumbra" to shed light on the manner in which people make present and engage in the world around them, including the shadowy spaces that have to be negotiated in order to make sense of the world, the author shows how these concepts account for empathetic and intersubjective encounters with non-human animals. Grounded in rich ethnographic work, Totemism and Human-Animal Relations in West Africa offers a reappraisal of totemism and considers the implications of the ontological turn in understanding human-animal relations. As such, it will appeal to anthropologists, sociologists and anthrozoologists concerned with human-animal interaction.

Gender Smart Mobility - Concepts, Methods, and Practices: Hilda Rømer Christensen, Michala Hvidt Breengaard, Lena Levin Gender Smart Mobility - Concepts, Methods, and Practices
Hilda Rømer Christensen, Michala Hvidt Breengaard, Lena Levin
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents gender and diversity in smart transport as a cutting-edge issue in urban contexts around the globe. It addresses new challenges and possibilities related to the smart transport sector. It demonstrates how gender and diversity are entangled in concepts and various forms of current smart mobility practices in policy, planning, and innovation. Gender Smart Mobility is presented as a game changer for future transport planning and mobility practices and how smart mobility technologies and practices might be created as a common good for all. The readers are presented with fresh approaches ranging from intersectional and visual analysis of smart mobility, gender scripts and language, to gendered innovation of design and planning. Moreover, the readers will encounter engaging boxed features which present historical, cross-cultural, and methodological examples and pose questions for critical thinking. This book meets a need for a systematic, accessible, and practical introduction and is of interest to city planners, transport providers, and politicians as well as the general public. It will also be a valuable reference for graduate and postgraduate students at technical universities, schools of architecture and planning, and for students and faculties in the social sciences, humanities, and IT and design studies. Mareike Fischer, Lina Herbst, Sophie Kersting, Annemarie Luise Kühn, Kristina Wicke; Foreword by …
R4,750 Discovery Miles 47 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Whether you are looking for an introduction to the field of tree balance, a reference work on the multitude of available balance indices or inspiration for your future research, this book offers all three. It delves into the significance of tree balance in phylogenetics and other research domains, where numerous indices have been introduced over the years. While the variations in definitions and underlying principles among these indices have long remained a challenge, this survey addresses the problem by presenting formal definitions of balance and imbalance indices and establishing desirable properties.  The book is comprehensive both in the inclusion of a variety of indices and in the information provided on them: the authors meticulously analyze and categorize established indices, shedding light on their general, statistical and combinatorial properties. They reveal that, while some known balance indices fail to meet the most basic criteria, certain tree shape statistics from other contexts prove to be effective balance measures. The collected properties are neatly presented, numerous new results are established, open research questions are highlighted, and possible applications are discussed. Reviewing over twenty (im)balance indices, a wealth of mathematical insights is provided, accompanied by real-world examples showcasing the importance of tree balance in diverse research areas. Catering to researchers, students, mathematicians, and biologists, the book can be used as a textbook for university seminars, a reference on tree balance, and as a source of inspiration for future research. It is accompanied by the free R package 'treebalance', a powerful tool to further explore and apply the discussed concepts, and a website allowing quick access to the main information and the latest developments in the field.

Datenschutz für Entscheider in Marketing und Vertrieb - Die DSGVO – Vom Spielverderber zum Wettbewerbsvorteil (1. Aufl.... Datenschutz für Entscheider in Marketing und Vertrieb - Die DSGVO – Vom Spielverderber zum Wettbewerbsvorteil (1. Aufl. 2023)
Andreas Krämer, Reinhold Mauer
R1,121 Discovery Miles 11 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Efe Can Gürcan, Ömer Ersin Kahraman, Selen Yanmaz
R768 Discovery Miles 7 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

COVID-19 may be an historical turning point for global capitalism. It has revealed the crisis of neoliberal globalization; however, this does not automatically lead to the ultimate defeat of capitalism or its neoliberal incarnation. The authors in this collection posit that a new framework cannot be built on the values and beliefs of current-day consumer capitalist society; resistance in the pandemic age should be based on the values and beliefs that could be the foundation of a new, postcapitalist society. This book formulates a tentative revolutionary program that could take advantage of the COVID-19 environment to defeat and transcend capitalism.

Stammkundenbindung versus Neukundengewinnung - Marketing und Vertrieb im Spannungsfeld von Hunting und Farming (Paperback, 1.... Stammkundenbindung versus Neukundengewinnung - Marketing und Vertrieb im Spannungsfeld von Hunting und Farming (Paperback, 1. Aufl. 2023)
Andreas Krämer, Regine Kalka, Wolfgang Merkle
R1,864 Discovery Miles 18 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The worldwide booming timber construction sector and its rapid development beyond the limits of high-rise buildings demands high-performance materials, which are made possible by hardwood. Innovative production methods and manufacturing processes create economically competitive products that open up completely new possibilities for the construction sector - thanks to an almost forgotten building material. For it was not without reason that construction sector used predominantly hardwood until the 18th century. "Building with hardwood" focuses on its use in the supporting structure. The publication provides specialist knowledge for the safe handling of hardwood in building construction and shows successful examples of architecture from practice for practice.
