Michelle McLeod, Rachel Dodds, Richard Butler
R4,423 Discovery Miles 44 230 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book provides comprehensive insight into the challenges faced by island tourism destinations and theoretical and practical paths for built in sustainability and resiliency. It explores Island Tourism Resilience within the context of 'Lifecycles, System Decline and Resilience'. Tourism is a key activity for many islands, and some depend on the tourism sector as a main economic activity. An exploration of islands across the globe that addresses substantial matters of ongoing sustainability and resiliency is ever important. An array of challenges including natural disasters, climate change, economic and political crises among others has been addressed in the book, with additional areas such as overtourism and COVID-19 included at the conclusion. This volume is essential reading for academics, tourism planners and policy makers seeking to develop sustainable and resilient island destinations. With a new Foreword, Introduction, Conclusion and Afterword, the chapters in this book were originally published in the journal, Tourism Geographies.

Knowledge Networks and Tourism (Paperback): Michelle McLeod, Roger Vaughan Knowledge Networks and Tourism (Paperback)
Michelle McLeod, Roger Vaughan
R1,546 Discovery Miles 15 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The receipt of knowledge is a key ingredient by which the tourism sector can adjust and adapt to its dynamic environment. However although its importance has long been recognised the fragmentation within the sector, largely as a result of it being comprised of small and medium sized businesses, makes understanding knowledge management challenging. This book applies knowledge management and social network theories to the business of tourism to shed light on successful operations of tourism knowledge networks. It contributes specifically to understanding a network perspective of the tourism sector, the information needs of tourism businesses, social network dynamics of tourism business operation, knowledge flows within the tourism sector and the transformation of the tourism sector through knowledge networks. Social Network Analysis is applied to fully explore the growth and maintenance of tourism knowledge networks and the relationships between tourism sector stakeholders in relation to their knowledge requirements. Knowledge Networks and Tourism will be valuable reading for all those interested in successful operations of tourism knowledge networks.

How will limited budgets affect the future exploitation of air and space? This question is extremely relevant to Air Force planners today. Some are now suggesting the integration of existing air and space policy, in an effort to maximize limited resources. This paper seeks answers to these questions through analysis of each public policy, offering three effects integrated policy may have on future Air Force operations. Public policy is all about what you can do for citizens. Determining the probable success of policies is not easy, given our political system, and the difficulty in capturing costs and assigning values to perceived benefits. For these reasons, this paper uses political science based administrative and values analysis tools to extrapolate success. The analysis of national air policy found it highly effective. The second analysis, an extrapolation of expected results for space policy, uncovered a lower chance for success. This was based on a comparison of the two case studies, which highlighted resource availability as an important success determinant. This formed the basis of arguments for integrated policy, and all subsequent doctrine recommendations The research supports arguments for adopting an integrated policy, and provides the rationale for three changes to Air Force doctrine, roles and missions; transfer of the responsibility for close air support, reevaluation of space launch support activities, and modification of the requirements for base operability and defense. Divestiture of these functions better focuses the Air Force on its unique core competencies in the future.

Compared to Gaelic poetry, the history of Gaelic theatre has not been a particularly long one, with the first examples appearing in the eighteenth century. However, drama in Gaelic began to thrive in the twentieth century, and modern Gaelic drama has the power to break down barriers and to touch people across linguistic and cultural divides. This collection is a celebration of this often-overlooked genre, bringing together eight Gaelic plays from the start of the twentieth century to the present day. Accessible to non-Gaelic speakers, this book contains English translations as well as an introduction to the history of Gaelic theatre, and to the playwrights whose skill and commitment to their art deserves much wider recognition. Contents Reiteach Moraig (Morag's Betrothal) - Iain M. Anatomy of a Beast - Obsession and Myth on the Trail of Bigfoot (Paperback): Michael McLeod Anatomy of a Beast - Obsession and Myth on the Trail of Bigfoot (Paperback)
Michael McLeod
R766 Discovery Miles 7 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Part history, part road trip, and part biography, this is the true story of a remarkable group of men whose obsession with Bigfoot turned the giant hominid into an American icon. Award-winning journalist Michael McLeod tells of Bigfoot's rise to tabloid stardom in a fast-paced account that begins with his own journey to investigate a famous 1967 film clip of a Bigfoot in a California forest. McLeod proceeds to uncover a trail of clues reaching from the late nineteenth century, when a few ambitious, imaginative naturalists and explorers synthesized historical and indigenous folklore with Darwinian ideas and speculated that a proto-hominid 'missing link' might still be alive in remote areas. That speculation would eventually inspire a colorful cast of loggers, hunters, con artists, and businessmen in the twentieth century to create the modern myth of Bigfoot, all of them angling for a piece of a monster that the media and the public still can't get enough of. Told through vividly narrated interviews and anecdotes, "Anatomy of a Beast" offers a unique perspective on the deep roots of counterfactual thinking - and how obsession and myth are created out of it.
