This popular BEC series has been completely revised. PASS Cambridge
BEC is a practical course for students who wish to gain a
recognised business English qualification. Focusing on relevant
international business situations, the course has been structured
to provide students with a thorough preparation for the Business
English Certificates (BEC).
The PASS Cambridge BEC Preliminary Workbook is an important
component of the course. It provides a language-focused supplement
to the Student's Book. Each four-page unit is split into a grammar
and vocabulary section.
Based on the Cambridge Edition of Lawrence's letters and works,
this is a systematic study of his neglected early novels and short
stories. Michael Black considers that these should be taken
seriously as a representative part of Lawrence's entire output and
demonstrates how they show originality. He places Lawrence in a new
light as an artist, especially considering the relationship between
his art and thought.

This second volume of the author's commentary on Lawrence's
prose-works concentrates on the sequence of non-fictional texts
written between 1913 and 1917, namely the "Foreword" to "Sons and
Lovers", "Study of Thomas Hardy", "Twilight in Italy", "The Crown"
and "The Reality of Peace". In all of them Lawrence was
compulsively rewriting what he called "my philosophy". They are
difficult works, highly metaphorical, in places prophetically
expressionist, even surreal.;This extended commentary attempts to
make sense of them, treating them as a succession of experimental
writings which support each other, develop non-discursive modes of
writing, and are linked by shared metaphors which reveal shared
preoccupations. The analysis which enters them most usefully is
like the close reading of poetry.;An introductory Part 1 looks back
to the early fiction treated in the first volume, to show how the
young Lawrence was always preoccupied with a sense of being, of
individual plenitude or flowering, of being part of a world which
invites a religious response. Lawrence's youthful religious doubts
were resolved neither by conventional faith nor by conventional
positivism or scientism. The philosophi
The Fifth International Workshop on Seeds was held at the
University of Reading, UK, from 10 to 15 September, 1995. Some 230
seed scientists, from a wide range of disciplines (botanists,
biochemists, ecologists, agriculturalists, foresters, and
commercial seedsmen), from 31 countries (Europe, the Americas, and
Asia) participated in the workshop. A large number of oral and
poster presentations was made during the workshop and we are
pleased to publish so many of them in these Proceedings. The papers
herein are listed by the sessions in which they were presented but,
as is often the case, many papers cover a broader range of topics
than the session titles imply. For seed physiologists, ecologists,
and technologists, this book collates much of the current research
on seeds.
In response to enormous recent advances, particularly in molecular
biology, the authors have revised their warmly received work. This
new edition includes updates on seed development, gene expression,
dormancy, and other subjects. It will serve as the field's standard
textbook and reference source for many years to come.

For introductory courses for biology majors. Uniquely engages
biology students in active learning, scientific thinking, and skill
development. Scott Freeman's Biological Science is beloved for its
Socratic narrative style, its emphasis on experimental evidence,
and its dedication to active learning. Science education research
indicates that true mastery of content requires a move away from
memorisation towards active engagement with the material in a
focused, personal way. Biological Science is designed to equip
students with strategies to assess their level of understanding and
identify the types of cognitive skills that need improvement. With
the 6th Edition, content has been streamlined with an emphasis on
core concepts and core competencies from the Vision and Change in
Undergraduate Biology Education report. The text's unique BioSkills
section is now placed after Chapter 1 to help students develop key
skills needed to become a scientist, new "Making Models" boxes
guide learners in interpreting and creating models, and new "Put It
all Together" case studies conclude each chapter and help students
see connections between chapter content and current, real-world
research questions. New, engaging content includes updated coverage
of global climate change, advances in genomic editing, and recent
insights into the evolution of land plants.
In 1984 the Press celebrated 400 years of continuous printing and
publishing. This history, now published as a paperback, provides a
readable introduction to that unique period, with a new foreword by
Gordon Johnson which comments on the continuing achievement of the
Press today. The story is of the development of the printing and
publishing arm of the University of Cambridge, from the medieval
system of resident stationers to the modern international printing
and publishing house of today. The narrative is set within the
development of the University; in the history of the book trade as
a whole; and in the intellectual and political history of England.

Reading primary literature is an exciting, rewarding part of being
a scientist and "Reading Primary Literature" will help get readers
up to speed quickly in reading research articles. The booklet
covers the parts of a research paper, succinctly explaining the aim
of each section and how the paper works as a whole, and as a part
of the larger world of science. Readers select a paper to evaluate,
and this book guides them through that evaluation with clear
explanations, directions for reading and analyzing the material,
and applied questions to encourage critical reading skills. A list
of sources and references at the back helps readers get started
finding papers to read. For all readers interested in get readers
up to speed quickly in reading scientific research articles.
This workbook focuses on key ideas, principles, and concepts that
are fundamental to understanding biology. A variety of hands-on
activities, such as mapping and modeling, suit different learning
styles and help students discover which topics they need more help
on. Students learn biology by doing biology.
For introductory courses for biology majors. Discover biology,
develop skills, and make connections Known for its discovery-based,
student-centered approach, Scott Freeman's Biological Science
emphasizes higher-order thinking, enhances skill development, and
promotes active learning. Biological Science equips students with
strategies that go beyond memorization and guides them in making
connections between core concepts and content, underscoring
principles from the Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology
Education report. Students learn to apply their knowledge
throughout the course, assess their level of understanding, and
identify the types of cognitive skills that need improvement. The
7th Edition enables students to see that biology concepts are
connected by weaving one case study throughout the entire text,
helping students make connections across biology. New content
includes updated coverage of advances in genomic editing, global
climate change, and recent insights into the evolution of land
plants. New embedded Pearson eText assets support content in the
text with whiteboard Making Models videos, Figure Walkthrough

This is a short, illustrated account of the world's oldest publishing house, from the publication of the Press's first book in 1584 through to the present day. It emphasizes the constitutional basis of the Press--an essential part of its parent university--and highlights key moments of crisis and change: Richard Bentley's revival in the 1690s, the Victorian renaissance, the rise of modern university publishing, two world wars, the crisis of the 1970s--resolved by Geoffrey Cass' bold reconstruction--and the enterprising printing and publishing developments of the 1990s.
This is the first critical study of Sons and Lovers to engage with the new Cambridge edition, which prints for the first time the whole text that Lawrence wrote, restoring the sustantial cuts made by the first editor. Michael Black gives special attention to the genesis of the book--the writing and editing processes, where Jessie Chambers and then Edward Garnett made decisive interventions. He analyzes Sons and Lovers in detail, relates it to Lawrence's other works, and traces the history of its reception. Historical context and a guide to further reading are also provided.
