Between 1944 and 1953, a power struggle emerged between New York
governor Thomas Dewey and U.S. senator Robert Taft of Ohio that
threatened to split the Republican Party. In The Roots of Modern
Conservatism, Michael Bowen reveals how this two-man battle for
control of the GOP - and the Republican presidential nomination -
escalated into a divide of ideology that ultimately determined the
party's political identity. Initially, Bowen argues, the separate
Dewey and Taft factions endorsed fairly traditional Republican
policies. However, as their conflict deepened, the normally mundane
issues of political factions, such as patronage and fund-raising,
were overshadowed by the question of what "true" Republicanism
meant. Taft emerged as the more conservative of the two leaders,
while Dewey viewed Taft's policies as outdated. Eventually,
conservatives within the GOP organized against Dewey's leadership
and, emboldened by the election of Dwight Eisenhower, transformed
the party into a vehicle for the Right. Bowen reveals how this
decade-long battle led to an outpouring of conservative sentiment
that had been building since World War II, setting the stage for
the ascendancy of Barry Goldwater and the modern conservative
movement in the 1960s.
Praise for Screenscam "Bowen writes with knowledge and wit, tongue
in cheek or rudely protruding. His cat-and-mouse corporate thriller
zips merrily to a high-speed conclusion." -Publishers Weekly
"Gorgeous plot complications...a perfect paradise of dropped
stitches, the first mystery in many a day that should have been
longer." -Kirkus Reviews Attorney Rep Pennyworth faces the client
from hell. Charlotte Buchanan, author of a mystery of no particular
merit, contends her 1997 novel is the basis for a 1999 film, and
she wants to sue. Rep would blow her off, but Charlotte's the
daughter of the CEO of Tavistock, Ltd., the firm's major corporate
client. Rep digs in, aided by his literature-addicted wife Melissa,
and files suit. By return mail comes a death threat, a grisly (and
gristly) version of "Hold Your Tongue." The film's director,
Hollywood legend Aaron Eastman, and Rep talk and, bit by bit, the
outline of a bizarre scheme to destroy his credibility-and that of
his films-emerges. Hoosiers Rep and Melissa aren't prepared for the
larger licenses granted to political powerhouses, but they're quick
on the uptake and soon armed.... Michael Bowen, a trial lawyer who
practices in Wisconsin, is the author of numerous mystery novels,
including Screenscam, which feature Rep and Melissa Pennyworth.
Bowen wrote the entry on the American Legal System for the Oxford
Companion to Crime and Mystery Writing.
A dead body is discovered in a locked room in a country house in
the affluent Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. Nine people were
present in the house at the time, nine people who saw nothing
they'd like to report and did nothing they're willing to confess
to.
A document that might relate to a CIA scandal in the recent
past--or to a presidential election in the near future--is missing,
and much sought after. No one will know exactly what it means until
it's found. But would someone be willing to kill for it?
The key to this complicated puzzle lies with two sisters, two young
women who don't quite fit into Washington's high-stakes political
arena. Retired Foreign Service agent Richard Michaelson and his
friend Marjorie Randolph find themselves at the middle of this
whirlwind of political and personal intrigue, and must do more than
sort clues. For the most challenging locked room you're likely to
encounter in Washington, D.C., is your own mind.
