The Poincare plot (named after Henri Poincare) is a popular
two-dimensional visualization tool for dynamic systems due to its
intuitive display of the dynamic properties of a system from a time
series. This book presents the basis of Poincare plot and focus
especially on traditional and new methods for analysing the
geometry, temporal and spatial dynamics disclosed by the Poincare
plot to evaluate heart rate variability (HRV). Mathematical
descriptors of Poincare plot have been developed to quantify the
autonomic nervous system activity (sympathetic and parasympathetic
modulation of heart rate). Poincare plot analysis has also been
used in various clinical diagnostic settings like diabetes, chronic
heart failure, chronic renal failure and sleep apnea syndrome. The
primary aims of quantification of the Poincare plots are to
discriminate healthy physiological systems from pathological
conditions and to classify the stage of a disease. The HRV analysis
by Poincare plot has opened up ample opportunities for important
clinical and research applications. Therefore, the present book can
be used either for self-study, as a supplement to courses in linear
and nonlinear systems, or as a modern monograph by researchers in
this field of HRV analysis.
They Must Fall: Muhammad Ali and the Men He Fought features
powerful and often moving images and stories of Muhammad Ali and
the men he fought in the ring, by award-winning photographer
Michael Brennan. "Around 1978, I had been in Houston, Texas
photographing former Ali opponent George Foreman who had then
reinvented himself as a roadside preacher. On the plane back to
NYC, I thought, 'If that's what George is doing, I wonder what the
rest of his opponents are up to?' I set out to track down as many
of the old guys as I could find." Brennan spent decades locating
Ali's former opponents to discover what had become of them. This
unique book is a look through Brennan's remarkable archive,
containing numerous never-before- seen photos plus poignant stories
illuminating the images and contextualising Ali's powerful role in
the world of sport. Includes a special introductory essay by the
late, great Jimmy Breslin. "Michael Brennan's iconic 1977 portrait
photograph of Muhammad Ali captures something far bigger and deeper
than just the beautiful face of a beautiful man. It is a detailed
map of the personal journey of one whose incomparable talents and
audacity caused literati to swoon, taught a generation to question
authority, and ultimately altered the path of a society which had
never before seen a man exactly like him. To look at him the way he
was then is to remember, with joy and sorrow, who we all once
were." - Jim Lampley, discussing the cover image (Boxing
commentator, HBO Sports)
This is the first fully annotated old-spelling edition of the
entire text of the autograph English journal of Robert Bargrave
(1628-61), recording his extensive travels as a merchant. This
manuscript (now Bodleian Library MS Rawlinson C 799), describes
four separate journeys made by Bargrave: his sea voyage from
England to Constantinople; an arduous return journey overland from
Constantinople to England, via Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Germany,
and the Low Countries; extensive travels, for both commercial and
cultural purposes, in Spain, Sicily, Italy and the Morea; and a
return journey from Venice to Margate, via Trento, Innsbruck, and
Augsburg, including his visit to Heidelberg where he met the exiled
English royalist community at the court of Elizabeth, Queen of
Bohemia. The introduction to the edition gives detailed
consideration to the political, religious, and personal
affiliations of the Bargraves, a prominent Kentish family, with
special reference to their experiences of overseas travel. While
abroad, Robert also twice met up with his cousin, John Bargrave (c.
1610-80), the noted traveller and antiquarian. The introduction
also provides an assessment of the historical, literary, and
geographical importance of Robert Bargrave's journey; a survey of
his extensive musical and dramatic interests; and the first
detailed account of the provenances of both MS Rawlinson C 799 and
now a lost earlier draft of this journal, identified here as the
Eastry Court Manuscript. The edition includes seventeen
illustrations, Bargrave family trees, and a selective bibliography
of primary and secondary sources consulted.
