Ben Stone (Michael J. Fox) is an ambitious East Coast plastic surgeon who leaves his home in Washington for a life of riches in California. On the way West he crashes his car in the small town of Grady, and is resentfully obliged to stay there whilst his vehicle is being repaired. As the town doesn't have a doctor, Stone is soon roped in for medical help, and finds himself strangely enjoying the simpler pleasures of small-town existence.

When violence erupts in the country, Joe's school becomes the base for a Belgian peacekeeping force, and along with Father Christopher, Joe decides to remain behind and use the school as a refuge for the persecuted Tutsis - until the Belgian soldiers leave, and they are all put in terrible danger.

The film follows troubled, London teenager Jamie Harrison (Letitia Wright) who has lived in care homes for most of her life after being abandoned by her mother. Her new, unconventional support worker Kate (Shirley Henderson) tries to help her realise her potential but Jamie's best friend Leanne (Isabella Laughland) is not so keen on letting her partner in crime abandon the life of drugs and violence they share together.
