" Coppedge has written what may well be the best book ever
published on political party behavior in Latin America; it is
extensively researched, methodologically sophisticated, tightly
argued, and well written. . . . The author demonstrates a mastery
not only of Venezuelan and Latin American literature, but also the
major theoretical works on party behavior. . . . The work is
particularly noteworthy in linking political party behavior to the
wider political system, along with suggesting policy changes to
enhance the quality of democratic government. But even more
significantly, the book is bold and imaginative in the sense that
it challenges prevailing scholarship on party behavior and
undoubtedly will provoke controversy." -- American Political
Science Review
" Coppedge provides a wealth of data from extensive interviews with
party elites, thereby shedding light on factionalism and internal
clientelism. There is great richness in his treatment of Accio n
Democra tica, which is the major focus for his investigation. . . .
The book provides insights which merit testing in other countries."

This bold and comprehensive reassessment of democracy in Venezuela
explains why one of the oldest and most admired democracies in
Latin America became fragile after more than three decades of
apparent stability.
The Varieties of Democracy project (V-Dem) pioneered new ways to
conceptualize and measure democracy, producing a multidimensional
and disaggregated data set on democracy around the world that is
now widely used by researchers, activists, and governments. Why
Democracies Develop and Decline draws on this data to present a
comprehensive overview and rigorous empirical tests of the factors
that contribute to democratization and democratic decline, looking
at economic, social, institutional, geographic, and international
factors. It is the most authoritative and encompassing empirical
analysis of the causes of democratization and reversals. The volume
also proposes a comprehensive theoretical framework and presents an
up-to-date description of global democratic developments from the
French Revolution to the present. Each chapter leverages the
specialized expertise of its authors, yet their sustained
collaboration lends the book an unusually unified approach and a
coherent theory and narrative.
Varieties of Democracy is the essential user's guide to The
Varieties of Democracy project (V-Dem), one of the most ambitious
data collection efforts in comparative politics. This global
research collaboration sparked a dramatic change in how we study
the nature, causes, and consequences of democracy. This book is
ambitious in scope: more than a reference guide, it raises
standards for causal inferences in democratization research and
introduces new, measurable, concepts of democracy and many
political institutions. Varieties of Democracy enables anyone
interested in democracy - teachers, students, journalists,
activists, researchers and others - to analyze V-Dem data in new
and exciting ways. This book creates opportunities for V-Dem data
to be used in education, research, news analysis, advocacy, policy
work, and elsewhere. V-Dem is rapidly becoming the preferred source
for democracy data.

Democratization and Research Methods is a coherent survey and
critique of both democratization research and the methodology of
comparative politics. The two themes enhance each other: the
democratization literature illustrates the advantages and
disadvantages of various methodological approaches, and the
critique of methods makes sense of the vast and bewildering
democratization field. Michael Coppedge argues that each of the
three main approaches in comparative politics - case studies and
comparative histories, formal modeling and large-sample statistical
analysis - accomplishes one fundamental research goal relatively
well: 'thickness', integration and generalization, respectively.
Throughout the book, comprehensive surveys of democratization
research demonstrate that each approach accomplishes one of these
goals well but the other two poorly. Chapters cover
conceptualization and measurement, case studies and comparative
histories, formal models and theories, political culture and survey
research, and quantitative testing. The final chapter summarizes
the state of knowledge about democratization and lays out an agenda
for multi-method research.
