A man far ahead of his time, Archbishop Edwin V. O'Hara of Kansas
City (1881-1956) orchestrated numerous initiatives that profoundly
affected American Catholic life. His ceaseless activity as both
priest and bishop sowed seeds that flourished long past his
lifetime, from liturgical reform to Bible study, campus ministry to
social justice, minimum wage legislation to founding the National
Catholic Rural Life Conference. The pastoral challenges he
confronted in the first half of the last century--institutional
complacency; disorganization among Catholics and reluctance to
openly profess their faith; ignorance of social justice principles;
the defense of the Church in a sometimes hostile culture--all
remain significant challenges for the American Church today.
Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York, researched and
composed this biography in the early 1990s and continues to cite
O'Hara as his role model of an immensely effective bishop. In an
effort to revisit the pioneering work of church leaders, this book
is published for the first time in paperback and features a new
preface by Archbishop Dolan.
In this volume, Simona Goi and Frederick M. Dolan gather
stimulating arguments for the indispensability of fiction-including
poetry, drama, and film-as irreplaceable sites for wrestling with
nature, meaning , shortcomings, and the future of modern politics.
Between Terror and Freedom brings to the surface an understanding
of modernity as a multifaceted and dynamic narrative as it relates
to politics, philosophy, and fiction. Collecting essays across
fields, Goi and Dolan challenge strict disciplinary boundaries.
This is not meant to be read as another contribution to the debate
of whether literature is, can, or should be political. Between
Terror and Freedom instead reveals how literature illuminates and
expands our understanding of philosophical and political questions.
Political theorists, philosophers, cultural scholars, and
rhetoricians offer a fresh perspective on the questions of our age
and the paradoxes of modernity when they read literature.

Fictionalised account of the battle to secure Hill 937 (aka
Hamburger Hill), an objective which resulted in one of the
bloodiest conflicts of the Vietnam War. Focusing on the exploits of
3rd Squad, 1st Platoon, Bravo Company of the 101st Airborne
Division, it shows the extreme duress suffered by the soldiers
involved, as they do their best to win a pointless prize in a war
being fought without popular support and which - like the attempt
to secure the hill itself - is destined to end in failure. Written
by John Carabatsos, who himself served with the 1st Air Cavalry in
1968-69.
The American Porch, featured on NPR Weekend Edition, CBS Sunday
Morning, USA Today, and in the Chicago Tribune, relates the
colorful and surprising history of the porch in a lively journey
through architecture, literature, film, photography, and pop
culture, from ancient Greece to modern day.
Solidly researched and engagingly written, The American Porch
weaves many narratives into its larger story-how the word "stoic"
originated, how James Ives got Nathaniel Currier to begin
chronicling ordinary American life, how the "front porch campaign"
became a staple of American politics, why filmmakers and novelists
love the porch, and how the porch, after vanishing from American
domestic architecture after World War II, has made a comeback
thanks to preservationists and the New Urbanist movement in town
planning and domestic architecture.
The book begins with the renovation of Dolan's own porch, which led
him on a journey of inquiry that took unexpected directions.
According to Dolan, "When my wife and I rebuilt our porch, I felt a
very deep emotion, as if I was reconnecting with something. I
hadn't grown up in houses with front porches-my folks had a brick
colonial and later a Cape Cod, then a rambler. I started wondering
why I felt such a powerful connection to the experience of being on
a front porch."
Readers of The American Porch will understand and celebrate that
connection-in the evening hours on their front porches, if they are
lucky.
