A True Celebration of Christmas

For me there has always been something special about Christmas. I've heard far too many people say that Christmas is just for the children, and to them I say, BAH, HUMBUG. As far as the Christmas Spirit is concerned it belongs to all those who are prepared to let it in. I don't know what it is about the Christmas Carol but it strikes a chord in me, whether in the written form or on the screen, I find it an intensely powerful and moving story, one that brings the magic of Christmas to life.

My hope is that I have written something that stays true to the spirit of the story. You will find some of the original text inside, because for me it belongs there, either as a description of a bygone age, or because the lines belong there. I had intended to write in a slightly more contemporary style but instead found myself writing in a period hand.

"Our story begins long, long ago on Christmas Eve, back in old London town in a churchyard. It is a bitterly cold, blustery day, clouds rush across a grim, grey sky, the name of the church is not important but the man who was staring at a freshly filled grave is. Our character has his hat firmly jammed on his head, he wears a scarf and a thick coat that has seen better days, despite the biting cold he wears fingerless gloves and you can see his fingers twitching with impatience at his desire to return to his business. And it is his business now as he has just buried his partner, Jacob Marley.
At this point and for the sake of what is to come I should most definitely point out that Jacob Marley is most certainly dead and buried, otherwise there would be no point in their being there. The register was signed by the Reverend Fortescue, Mr Timms the Parish Clerk, Mr Gaunt the undertaker, and of course the chief mourner. These worthies were all who cared to bid farewell to Jacob Marley who it must be said was a fine man of business, with but one friend, family, indeed there was not one soul on the earth who would shed a tear at his passing.
Ebeneezer Scrooge was Jacob's partner, his only friend, executor and beneficiary of his dear friend's estate. Now it must be said that a part of Scrooge resented having to take time away from his business to attend to the funeral, but given the windfall that he had just received he was graciously prepared to forgive his late friend for the inconvenience that he had caused."
