This study investigates the overlaps between political discourse
and literary and cinematic fiction, arguing that both are informed
by, and contribute to, the cultural imaginary of terrorism.
Whenever mass-mediated acts of terrorism occur, they tend to
trigger a proliferation of threat scenarios not only in the realm
of literature and film but also in the statements of policymakers,
security experts, and journalists. In the process, the discursive
boundary between the factual and the speculative can become
difficult to discern. To elucidate this phenomenon, this book
proposes that terror is a halfway house between the real and the
imaginary. For what characterizes terrorism is less the single act
of violence than it is the fact that this act is perceived to be
the beginning, or part, of a potential series, and that further
acts are expected to occur. As turn-of-the-century writers such as
Stevenson and Conrad were the first to point out, this gives terror
a fantastical dimension, a fact reinforced by the clandestine
nature of both terrorist and counter-terrorist operations.
Supported by contextual readings of selected texts and films from
The Dynamiter and The Secret Agent through late-Victorian science
fiction to post-9/11 novels and cinema, this study explores the
complex interplay between actual incidents of political violence,
the surrounding discourse, and fictional engagement with the issue
to show how terrorism becomes an object of fantasy. Drawing on
research from a variety of disciplines, The Cultural Imaginary of
Terrorism will be a valuable resource for those with interests in
the areas of Literature and Film, Terrorism Studies, Peace and
Conflict Studies, Trauma Studies, and Cultural Studies.
A WALL STREET JOURNAL BOOK OF THE YEAR 'Beautiful, sober and
affecting - a testament to remembrance and friendship' - DALIA
SOFER 'A momentous historic retrieval and work of literary art' -
PHILLIP LOPATE 'Having the last word can be very lonely.' Nearly a
century of life behind her, Stella Levi had never shared the full
details of her past with anyone. That is until she met Michael
Frank, and asked him to help her polish a talk she was to give
about life in the Juderia of Rhodes. Neither of them could know
that this was the first of one hundred Saturdays that they would
spend in each other's company. Courageous and sharp, elegant and
sly, Stella is a formidable modern Scheherazade whose Saturday
instalments give a window into the vibrant, vanished world of the
Jews of Rhodes. She unspools for the first time the long threads of
her history - from the sun-soaked shores of her childhood, to the
fifteen harrowing months she spent in camps scattered throughout
Europe, and finally to the United States and New York as one of
only 150 Jews from Rhodes to survive. Featuring colour
illustrations based on Stella's family photographs, One Hundred
Saturdays is an unusual and extraordinary memoir. It is a testament
to the soul-saving power of relationships; to memories revisited;
to resilience. It's not only a vital slice of history that has
largely been ignored, but a story of the possibility of an
ever-evolving self, even after confronting Hell.
A TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR A NEW STATESMAN BOOK OF THE YEAR
WINNER OF THE 2018 JQ WINGATE LITERARY PRIZE A story at once
extremely strange and entirely familiar - about families,
innocence, art and love. This hugely enjoyable, totally
unforgettable memoir is a classic in the making. Michael's family
situation is complicated. His aunt is his father's sister, who is
married to his mother's brother. In this unusually intertwined
world, even his grandmothers share an apartment together for twelve
conflicted years. Most unusual of all is Michael's Aunt Hankie. A
gifted, glamorous screenwriter, she is a beauty with violet
eyelids, a tower of hair and no children of her own, a force that
Michael will spend his life alternately being drawn towards and
desperately trying to escape. A story of a magnetic figure and the
boy held in her orbit, The Mighty Franks is for anyone who has
struggled to find their voice amid the chaos of family life.

The use of energy is being shaped by environmental issues
including the fear of global warming. This has resulted in the
development of renewable energy sources and more efficient building
technology. Examining trends in energy efficiency, this book
explores energy technologies and fuels, their prospects in a world
with greenhouse gas restrictions. It looks at the technical and
economic tradeoffs of traditional renewables such as wind and
solar, as well as large scale PV and concentrated thermal power. It
also considers biomass technologies. For each of these
technologies, it discusses planning, siting, installation,
operation and maintenance, health and safety, power conditioning,
and efficiency innovations.
The hydrogen car has been proposed as the solution to our oil
problems, but how would it work, and what potential problems
associated with it? This book addresses these questions and
provides specifics about current developments toward a
hydrogen-based energy infrastructure. It offers the reader an
informed look at the current state of fuel cell power and
transportation technology, and where it's headed.
Emergency and Backup Power Sources: Preparing for Blackouts and
Brownouts provides invaluable information on emergency and backup
power sources, as we deal with an aging power distribution system
that often fails to provide reliable power. The massive power
outage in the summer of 2003 that affected eight states and parts
of Canada exemplifies the importance of this topic.
You will find much useful information on the types of systems that
can take over during power interruptions, such as standby power
systems that employ batteries, kinetic energy storage, fuel cells,
reciprocating engines, and turbines. Topics include power
disturbances and interruptions, spikes and noise, sags and surges,
surge suppression, voltages regulation, load management, power
quality issues, reliability and maintainability, comparison of
operating costs, environmental issues, blackout planning, emergency
procedures, and more.
One of Wall Street Journal's Ten Best Books of the Year * Winner of
the National Jewish Book Awards for Holocaust Memoir and Sephardic
Culture * Recipient of the Jewish Book Council's Natan Notable Book
Award * Winner of the Sophie Brody Medal The remarkable story of
ninety-nine-year-old Stella Levi whose conversations with the
author over the course of six years bring to life the vibrant world
of Jewish Rhodes, the deportation to Auschwitz that extinguished
ninety percent of her community, and the resilience and wisdom of
the woman who lived to tell the tale. With nearly a century of life
behind her, Stella Levi had never before spoken in detail about her
past. Then she met Michael Frank. He came to her Greenwich Village
apartment one Saturday afternoon to ask her a question about the
Juderia, the neighborhood on the Greek island of Rhodes where she'd
grown up in a Jewish community that had thrived there for half a
millennium. Neither of them could know this was the first of one
hundred Saturdays over the course of six years that they would
spend in each other's company. During these meetings Stella
traveled back in time to conjure what it felt like to come of age
on this luminous, legendary island in the eastern Aegean, which the
Italians conquered in 1912, began governing as an official colonial
possession in 1923, and continued to administer even after the
Germans seized control in September 1943. The following July, the
Germans rounded up all 1,700-plus residents of the Juderia and sent
them first by boat and then by train to Auschwitz on what was the
longest journey--measured by both time and distance--of any of the
deportations. Ninety percent of them were murdered upon arrival.
Probing and courageous, candid and sly, Stella is a magical
modern-day Scheherazade whose stories reveal what it was like to
grow up in an extraordinary place in an extraordinary time--and to
construct a life after that place has vanished. One Hundred
Saturdays is a portrait of one of the last survivors drawn at
nearly the last possible moment, as well as an account of a tender
and transformative friendship between storyteller and listener,
offering a powerful "reminder that the ability to listen
thoughtfully is a rare and significant gift" (The Wall Street
Journal).

e-learning. These chapters explain how knowledge capture,
retention, transfer, and sharing can help enhance the e-learning
experience.
Edited and written by leading authorities in the fields of
knowledge management and e-learning, the book contains
international case studies that illustrate the applications of KM
to e-learning in businesses, government agencies, and universities
in the United States, Canada, Mexico, United Kingdom, Europe, and
Asia. The text is divided into four parts:
- Setting the Stage
- Methodologies and Techniques
- Case Studies and Applications
- Industry Perspectives
This groundbreaking reference discusses the use of digital media
engagement and social media to enhance the e-learning experience
through the ability to share knowledge among various communities
and individuals. It details key KM and social networking
methodologies, trends, and technologies. The text concludes with a

this rapidly evolving field.
Well before the innovation of maps, gazetteers served as the main
geographic referencing system for hundreds of years. Consisting of
a specialized index of place names, gazetteers traditionally linked
descriptive elements with topographic features and coordinates.
Placing Names is inspired by that tradition of discursive
place-making and by contemporary approaches to digital data
management that have revived the gazetteer and guided its
development in recent decades. Adopted by researchers in the
Digital Humanities and Spatial Sciences, gazetteers provide a way
to model the kind of complex cultural, vernacular, and perspectival
ideas of place that can be located in texts and expanded into an
interconnected framework of naming history. This volume brings
together leading and emergent scholars to examine the history of
the gazetteer, its important role in geographic information
science, and its use to further the reach and impact of spatial
reasoning into the digital age.
