Offering a full-scale study of the theory of reality hidden beneath modern logic, The Metaphysical Foundations of Logic, a lecture course given in 1928, illuminates the transitional phase in Heidegger's thought from the existential analysis of Being and Time to the overcoming of metaphysics in his later philosophy. In a searching exposition of the metaphysical problems underpinning Leibniz's theory of logical judgment, Heidegger establishes that a given theory of logic is rooted in a certain conception of Being. He explores the significance of Western logic as a system-building technical tool and as a cultural phenomenon that is centuries old.
A perceptive literary critic, a world-famous writer of witty and
playful verses for children, a leading authority on children's
linguistic creativity, and a highly skilled translator, Kornei
Chukovsky was a complete man of letters. As benefactor to many
writers including Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Joseph Brodsky, he
stood for several decades at the center of the Russian literary
milieu. It is no exaggeration to claim that Chukovsky knew everyone
involved in shaping the course of twentieth-century Russian
literature. His voluminous diary, here translated into English for
the first time, begins in prerevolutionary Russia and spans nearly
the entire Soviet era. It is the candid commentary of a brilliant
observer who documents fifty years of Soviet literary activity and
the personal predicament of the writer under a totalitarian
regime.
Virtual Realism is an art form and a way of living with technology. To explain it, Michael Heim draws on a hypertext of topics, from answering machines to interactive art, from engineering to television programs, from the meaning of UFOs to the Internet. The book begins with the primer "VR 101". The issues are discussed, then several chapters illustrate virtual realism with tours through art exhibits and engineering projects. Each chapter suggests a harmony of technology with lifestyle.
In this book Michael Heim provides the first consistent philosophical basis for critically evaluating the impact of word processing on our use of and ideas about language. This edition includes a new foreword by David Gelernter, a new preface by the author, and an updated bibliography. Not only important but seminal, on the cutting-edge, furrowing new conceptual territory.-Walter J. Ong, S.J. A philosopher ponders how the word processor has affected language use and our ideas about it. Walter Ong, that maintains all changes in writing technology tend to change the way we perceive the world. His argument that word processing leads to fragmented thinking should be addressed and debated.-Carlin Romano, Philadelphia Inquirer The arguments range over all of Western philosophy (and some Eastern as well), from the ancient Greeks to contemporary phenomenology... Everyone who has used a word processor will find much to think about in Heim's ideas.-David Weinberger, Byte Fascinating, clear, and well-done ... stimulating and challenging.-Don Ihde, Philosophy and Rhetoric
The Czech Avant-Garde Literary Movement Between the Two World Wars tells the little-known story of the renaissance of Czech literary arts in the period between the two world wars. The avant-garde writers during this period broke down the barrier between the elite literary language and the vernacular and turned to spoken language, substandard forms, everyday sources such as newspapers and detective stories, and forms of popular entertainment such as the circus and the cabaret. In his analyses of the writings of this period, Thomas G. Winner illuminates the aesthetic and linguistic characteristics of these works and shows how poetry and linguistics can be combined. The Czech Avant-Garde Literary Movement Between the Two World Wars is essential reading for courses on modern Czech literature, comparative literature, and Slavic literature.
As we begin to move in and out of a computer-generated world (in the form of virtual reality and computer communications networks), Michael Heim asks, how will the way we perceive our world change? Ranging from Heidegger to Word Processing, Heim writes a lively analysis of the way we and our world are changing in the light and shadow of technology.
