Medieval Greece brings together twelve articles by historian
Michael Heslop, showcasing his long-standing interest in the
medieval castles of Greece. Ten of the articles in this volume
focus on the Dodecanese islands, mainly Rhodes, at the time of
their rule by the Hospitallers during the period 1306-1522.
Scholarly and popular interest in the military orders has grown
substantially over the last twenty years, but comparatively little
has been written about the Hospitaller Dodecanese. What
distinguishes this work is the author's use of hitherto unpublished
documents from the Hospitaller archives in Malta and his assiduous
field work on the island sites discussed. Heslop's work on the
Hospitallers on the island of Rhodes has also enabled him to put
together an important gazetteer of place-names in the countryside
of Rhodes, published here for the first time. The remaining two
chapters of the collection summarize ground-breaking detective work
to locate Villehardouin's 'lost' castle of Grand Magne in the Mani,
and present a wider study of Byzantine fortifications in medieval
Greece. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval
history, and to all those interested in the history of the
Hospitallers. (CS1093).

Byzantium and Venice: 1204-1453, a selection of articles by the
late Julian Chrysostomides, focuses on Byzantium after the Fourth
Crusade and its relationship with Venice, particularly in the late
Palaeologan period. Seven of the articles deal with aspects of
Veneto-Byzantine interactions in the Peloponnese, while the
remainder concentrate on the political and commercial ties between
Byzantines and Venetians. The essays draw upon Julian
Chrysostomides' unrivalled knowledge of the relevant Venetian
documents.

"A Gecko in the Machine....Postcards from the Bahamas" covers a
period from the emigration by the author and his wife with Habu,
their German Shepherd dog to their newly built home on the island
of Exuma in the Bahamas: it is an affectionate portrait of the
subsequent events, places and characters that they have encountered
along the way written from a personal perspective. For anyone who
has visited the island, this book refreshes memories of the place,
the people, the activities, the incredible colour and warmth that
pervades everything and above all, highlights the total contrast
from home. For the armchair voyager, it will make a highly readable
and amusing travel book to curl up with after lunch on a cold, wet
day in cooler climes. For anyone seeking to acquire a second home
in the sun or even emigrate, it provides a genial picture of what
to expect, the good and the frustrating; but one is constantly
reminded that the ultimate reward can include an idyllic turquoise
sea, a magical sunset, the sighting of a rare sea creature and the
peace.
