When one of their robberies goes wrong, Clyde commits a murder and, with the police hot on their trail, the gangsters find themselves constantly on the run. The film received ten Oscar nominations, winning awards for Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actress for Parsons.

Axel alienates his uncle by beginning an affair with Elaine, who is obsessed with building a functioning aircraft, and he also becomes caught up in the deteriorating relationship between her and Grace.

In a 1930s American city, Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) takes a stranglehold on all underworld activities, disposing of his main rival Lips Manlis (Paul Sorvino) and nabbing his girlfriend Breathless Mahoney (Madonna). Dick Tracy (Beatty) is entrusted with the task of cleaning up the city, but problems on the home front, with the adoption of a young orphan, and the seductive come-ons of Breathless threaten to ruffle his composure.
