Coal Harbor is a small island located off the lower western corner of Alaska. It is a small fisherman's paradise and also serves as a resort in the warmer seasons. During the harsher winter months though, the island can remain under frozen ice and snow for up to six months. With winter fast approaching it appears to be just a typical winter season coming on to the remaining forest rangers Kevin and Betty whom are also in a relationship together. After a Learjet crashes into a snowbank the small quiet island suddenly becomes very dangerous. It is learned that the aircraft cargo could be a large shipment of cocaine and the survivors could be wanted drug smugglers.

It was a time in the 1800's when sailing ships with all of their masts and sails were quickly disappearing. They were being replaced by the new steamships for traveling by sea, carrying mail and passengers. The old wooden hulls were soon replaced with iron for more strength and durability. Along with the development of passenger travel by sea, the steamships accommodated passengers on long and short cruises, providing many things for the passenger's enjoyment including fine food, drinking and gambling. When two lawmen's curiosity and interest in a high stakes poker game on a very fine luxurious steamship becomes too great, Marshal Michael Creek and his deputy find themselves in a situation where they can get paid to enjoy a cruise. It soon becomes apparent that it could also cost them their lives.
It was the spring of 1869 in the old West and Carson City, Nevada was busy with all of its card games, whiskey drinking, shootouts in the streets, outlaws, drifters and brothels. With the local sheriff and his deputy temporarily out of town, Marshal Creek is the only authority in town. He is soon faced with a career ending move when he becomes involved in a fight against a local cattle rancher suspected of land grabbing by means of murder and burning folks out. A whole cast of interesting people arrive in town on the morning stage, including the new owners of the town's brothel. When the marshal is designated to be a tour guide for a Supreme Court Justice's wife and then the relationship turns romantic, this spells more trouble for Marshal Creek than he can handle.

Certain men headed out to capture him and to also collect the reward money. states over the Civil War, and the Congress and the President not seeing eye to eye, and with the cavalry preparing to wage war on the Indians, times were very hard in the territories. Along with the Civil War ending, and Indian wars on the rise, outlaws and gun fighters waged war with each other as well as with the lawmen. Bank and train robberies were on the rise, and the year 1868 would be remembered as a history making year. Note: This is a work of fiction. Survival on the western frontier in 1865 was dangerous at best. Along with growing conflicts between the Indians and the new settlements, the land was full of outlaws and gun slingers. By the misfortune of another, one such outlaw gets a chance to ride on the side of the law for a time.
