Where does the particular form or configuration of a pattern come
from, and how is it propagated from pattern to pattern? Templets
and the Explanation of Complex Patterns provides a natural language
for analysing such questions. Using it, the organisational forces
that underlie the fabrication of any pattern can be divided into
two classes. First, there are the 'universal laws' of pattern
assembly, the configurational rules and constraints inherent within
the fabric of the pattern elements themselves. Second, there are
the 'templets' - external, situational constraints imposed on the
pattern elements. From the perspective of templeting, simple
patterns can be directly contrasted with complex patterns: the
former are completely determined by their universal laws, whereas
the latter also require extensive templets. Natural patterns range
along the entire spectrum from simple to complex, and the most
complex of these include both random patterns and many biological
patterns.
It was a shot right through the heart. Worse, Isaac thought, Debra
had not even known she'd fired it. "You absolutely have to
photograph my wedding, Isaac. No one else can do it." No one? Isaac
Holman is a producer of esoteric indie films, the kind that show up
in the bargain bins at obscure film festivals. Once and always
hopelessly in love with Debra, he cannot believe that she would
entice him all the way to Yellowstone National Park, just so he can
photograph her marriage to someone else. Debra Siegal has spent a
decade climbing the labyrinthine Hollywood studio ladder. On the
cusp of her wedding to the scion of a Hollywood mogul, can it be
that only now she admits a lingering affection for Isaac? At once
hilarious and poignant, Dearly Befuddled is the story of two
people, at odds with each other and themselves. In his long-awaited
return to fiction, Michael J. Katz brilliantly juxtaposes the glitz
of Hollywood and the grandeur of Yellowstone, all in one tumultuous
wedding weekend at the Old Faithful Inn.
"When you properly apply Michael's brilliant techniques, your
customers will open email from you, read it, respond to it, and
pass it along to others. If you want your customers to stay in
touch with you, and to introduce you to other people, then read
this book."
Shared knowledge is indispensable to the practice of science, and
the scientific paper-whether published in a journal or collation
volume-is the chief means by which scientists communicate ideas and
results to their colleagues. Mastering the genre is thus an
essential element in every scientist's training. Using a published
paper as a guide, Michael J. Katz takes the reader through every
step of the writing process, including the use of standard formats
(abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results,
discussion, acknowledgments, and references), language (style and
word usage), and publication (choosing the appropriate journal, the
review process, and revising). Other chapters discuss figures
(photographs, schematic diagrams, and graphs), writing with a
computer, and numbers (algorithms and statistics). Nine appendices
provide a handy reference to commonly needed information such as
scientific abbreviations, non-technical words, and mathematic
formulae. While recognizing that the scientific paper is
constrained within a well-defined form, the book also stresses that
the genre is narrative prose requiring a lucid, precise, and
careful style. The elements of composition-gestation, diction,
revision, and rewriting-are discussed in detail. Elements of the
Scientific Paper is a useful handbook for young scientists and
graduate students beginning their publishing careers, as well as
for anyone wishing a review of or introduction to the elements of
scientific style.
