More than forty years after the composer's death, the music of Roberto Gerhard (1896-1970) continues to be recorded and performed and to attract international scholarly interest. The Roberto Gerhard Companion is the first full length scholarly work on this composer noted for his sharp intellect and original, exploring mind. This book builds on the outcomes of two recent international conferences and includes contributions by scholars from Spain, the USA and UK. The essays collected here explore themes and trends within Gerhard's work, using individual or groups of works as case studies. Among the themes presented are the way Gerhard's work was shaped by his Catalan heritage, his education under Pedrell and Schoenberg, and his very individual reaction to the latter's teaching and methods, notably Gerhard's very distinctive approach to serialism. The influence of these and other cultural and literary figures is an important underlying theme that ties essays together. Exiled from Catalonia from 1939, Gerhard spent the remainder of his life in Cambridge, England, composing a string of often ground-breaking compositions, notably the symphonies and concertos composed in the 1950s and 1960s. A particular focus in this book is Gerhard's electronic music. He was a pioneer in this genre and the book will contain the first rigorous studies of this music as well as the first accurate catalogue of this electronic output. His ground-breaking output of incidental music for radio and the stage is also given detailed consideration.
The piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition is perhaps the most widely known of Musorgsky's compositions, especially as orchestrated by Ravel. This informative and wide-ranging guide places the original piano work in the context of Russian cultural life, considering in particular the work of the artist Victor Hartman, creator of the pictures which inspired Musorgsky's composition. A detailed synopsis takes the reader through each piece in turn, describing the forms, the external references, and drawing connections with Musorgsky's other musical works. Chapters on the music itself consider, for example, folk elements, key relations and motivic structures. Dr Russ also describes the fate of the work in the hands of editors and performers and closes by surveying the best of the orchestrations, particularly that by Ravel. The book is illustrated with photographs of the existing pictures from Hartman's exhibition.
Mark Flynn may be the toughest secret agent in the business. Provided, of course, that he actually is a secret agent. "As a 'Stray Cat, '" Flynn tells the reader, "I'm one of the most covert agents working for the U.S. government. If I'm captured or killed, no government official would ever acknowledge my actions. And even if they did, whose actions are easier to disavow than those of someone with my history of mental illness?" In "You'll Do Anything," Flynn takes on a mission that forces him to redefine his fragile sense of reality and how he fits into it. A clandestine meeting between three local teenage hoodlooms and a pair of foreign operatives plunges Flynn neck-deep into a nefarious plot hatched by the outlandish doughnut baron General Horatio Monteford. Meanwhile, Flynn is caught up in a whirlwind romance with the beguiling Darlene Summers, who unknowingly lives at the edge of Monteford's evil plans. Flynn's bizzare mission and his complex personal life become hopelessly entangled, and as he unravels Monteford's scheme, the Stray Cat embarks on a journey that will change his life. So-is he, or isn't he? You'll Do Anything to find out
