Analysis and Geometry of Markov Diffusion Operators (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014): Dominique... Analysis and Geometry of Markov Diffusion Operators (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Dominique Bakry, Ivan Gentil, Michel Ledoux
R4,386 Discovery Miles 43 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The present volume is an extensive monograph on the analytic and geometric aspects of Markov diffusion operators. It focuses on the geometric curvature properties of the underlying structure in order to study convergence to equilibrium, spectral bounds, functional inequalities such as Poincare, Sobolev or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, and various bounds on solutions of evolution equations. At the same time, it covers a large class of evolution and partial differential equations. The book is intended to serve as an introduction to the subject and to be accessible for beginning and advanced scientists and non-specialists. Simultaneously, it covers a wide range of results and techniques from the early developments in the mid-eighties to the latest achievements. As such, students and researchers interested in the modern aspects of Markov diffusion operators and semigroups and their connections to analytic functional inequalities, probabilistic convergence to equilibrium and geometric curvature will find it especially useful. Selected chapters can also be used for advanced courses on the topic.

Michel Ledoux, Michel Talagrand
R1,774 Discovery Miles 17 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

New isoperimetric inequalities and random process techniques have recently appeared at the basis of the modern understanding of Probability in Banach spaces. Based on these tools, the book presents a complete treatment of the main aspects of Probability in Banach spaces (e.g. boundedness and continuity of random processes, integrability and limit theorems for vector valued random variables) and of some of their links to Geometry of Banach spaces. Its purpose is to present some of the main aspects of this theory, from the foundations to the latest developments, treated with the most recent and updated tools. In particular, the most important features are the systematic use of isoperimetry and related concentration of measure phenomena (to study integrability and limit theorems for vector valued random variables), and recent abstract random process techniques (entropy and majorizing measures). Some examples of these probabilistic ideas to classical Banach space theory complete this exposition.

Besides a series of six articles on Levy processes, Volume 38 of the Seminaire de Probabilites contains contributions whose topics range from analysis of semi-groups to free probability, via martingale theory, Wiener space and Brownian motion, Gaussian processes and matrices, diffusions and their applications to PDEs.

As do all previous volumes of this series, it provides an overview on the current state of the art in the research on stochastic processes.

The 36th Séminaire de Probabilités contains an advanced course on Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities by A. Guionnet and B. Zegarlinski, as well as two shorter surveys by L. Pastur and N. O'Connell on the theory of random matrices and their links with stochastic processes. The main themes of the other contributions are Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities, Stochastic Calculus, Martingale Theory and Filtrations. Besides the traditional readership of the Séminaires, this volume will be useful to researchers in statistical mechanics and mathematical finance.

The topics under study (martingales, filtrations, path properties, etc.) represent an important part of the current research performed in 1996-97 by various groups of probabilists in France and abroad.

The Concentration of Measure Phenomenon (Paperback): Michel Ledoux The Concentration of Measure Phenomenon (Paperback)
Michel Ledoux
R3,226 Discovery Miles 32 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The observation of the concentration of measure phenomenon is inspired by isoperimetric inequalities. A familiar example is the way the uniform measure on the standard sphere $S^n$ becomes concentrated around the equator as the dimension gets large. This property may be interpreted in terms of functions on the sphere with small oscillations, an idea going back to Levy. The phenomenon also occurs in probability, as a version of the law of large numbers, due to Emil Borel. This book offers the basic techniques and examples of the concentration of measure phenomenon. The concentration of measure phenomenon was put forward in the early seventies by V. Milman in the asymptotic geometry of Banach spaces. It is of powerful interest in applications in various areas, such as geometry, functional analysis and infinite-dimensional integration, discrete mathematics and complexity theory, and probability theory.Particular emphasis is on geometric, functional, and probabilistic tools to reach and describe measure concentration in a number of settings. This book presents concentration functions and inequalities, isoperimetric and functional examples, spectrum and topological applications, product measures, entropic and transportation methods, as well as aspects of M. Talagrand's deep investigation of concentration in product spaces and its application in discrete mathematics and probability theory, supremum of Gaussian and empirical processes, spin glass, random matrices, etc. Prerequisites are a basic background in measure theory, functional analysis, and probability theory.

One-Dimensional Empirical Measures, Order Statistics, and Kantorovich Transport Distances (Paperback): Sergey Bobkov, Michel... One-Dimensional Empirical Measures, Order Statistics, and Kantorovich Transport Distances (Paperback)
Sergey Bobkov, Michel Ledoux
R2,055 Discovery Miles 20 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work is devoted to the study of rates of convergence of the empirical measures $\mu_{n} = \frac {1}{n} \sum_{k=1}^n \delta_{X_k}$, $n \geq 1$, over a sample $(X_{k})_{k \geq 1}$ of independent identically distributed real-valued random variables towards the common distribution $\mu$ in Kantorovich transport distances $W_p$. The focus is on finite range bounds on the expected Kantorovich distances $\mathbb{E}(W_{p}(\mu_{n},\mu ))$ or $\big [ \mathbb{E}(W_{p}^p(\mu_{n},\mu )) \big ]^1/p$ in terms of moments and analytic conditions on the measure $\mu $ and its distribution function. The study describes a variety of rates, from the standard one $\frac {1}{\sqrt n}$ to slower rates, and both lower and upper-bounds on $\mathbb{E}(W_{p}(\mu_{n},\mu ))$ for fixed $n$ in various instances. Order statistics, reduction to uniform samples and analysis of beta distributions, inverse distribution functions, log-concavity are main tools in the investigation. Two detailed appendices collect classical and some new facts on inverse distribution functions and beta distributions and their densities necessary to the investigation.

Concentration, Functional Inequalities and Isoperimetry (Paperback): Christian Houdre, Michel Ledoux, Emanuel Milman, Mario... Concentration, Functional Inequalities and Isoperimetry (Paperback)
Christian Houdre, Michel Ledoux, Emanuel Milman, Mario Milman
R3,259 Discovery Miles 32 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The volume contains the proceedings of the international workshop on Concentration, Functional Inequalities and Isoperimetry, held at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, from October 29-November 1, 2009. The interactions between concentration, isoperimetry and functional inequalities have led to many significant advances in functional analysis and probability theory. Important progress has also taken place in combinatorics, geometry, harmonic analysis and mathematical physics, to name but a few fields, with recent new applications in random matrices and information theory. This book should appeal to graduate students and researchers interested in the fascinating interplay between analysis, probability, and geometry.
