Geographical Information Systems are becoming increasingly important to geologists, geographers, and urban and environmental planners, amongst others. Although there is an increasing number of such systems available on the market, many questions of a theoretical nature need to be addressed, because of the inherently large amounts of data and the lack of appropriate models and languages. Also, there is a need for flexible and efficient usage of GIS, thus permitting their application in a broad range of new areas, such as navigation systems for transport and the automotive industry. ESPRIT Working Groups provide a structure that enables researchers to meet, interact and share research results, thus providing a platform for ad dressing fertile research areas with significant industrial promise. This par ticular volume is the result of a workshop organised by the "Basic GOODS" Working Group. The challenge has been to define richer and more powerful data definition and manipulation languages, and also to develop new and efficient algorithms. The challenge has been met, as presented in this volume, and the Working Group has succeeded in laying a good foundation for future research and eventual applications. We look forward to seeing the results of the recently launched "AMUSING" project, which will build on this foundation."

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Spatial Databases, SSD '97, held in Berlin, Germany, in July 1997.
The 18 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from a total of 55 submissions. Also included are two keynote contributions. The papers are organized in topical sections on spatial similarities, geo-algorithms, spatial constraint databases, spatial query processing, systems, spatial data models and spatial access methods.

"Spatial Databases" is the first unified, in-depth treatment of special techniques for dealing with spatial data, particularly in the field of geographic information systems (GIS). This book surveys various techniques, such as spatial data models, algorithms, and indexing methods, developed to address specific features of spatial data that are not adequately handled by mainstream DBMS technology.

The book also reviews commercial solutions to geographic data handling: ArcInfo, ArcView, and Smallworld GISs; and two extensions to the relational model, PostgreSQL and Oracle Spatial. The authors examine these underlying GIS technologies, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and consider specific uses for which each product is best suited.

Im Rahmen dieser grundlegenden Fragestellung soll im Einzelnen untersucht werden, wodurch Unternehmen der Internetbranche Erfolg haben, wie man diese Erfolgsfaktoren systematisieren kann, ob es Unterschiede der Erfolgsfaktoren von Unternehmen des Web 1.0 und des Web 2.0 gibt und wie man den Grundungsprozess von Unternehmen der Internetbranche auf grund der vorgenannten Erfolgsfaktoren systematisieren kann. Ziel der Arbeit ist es weiterhin, Grundern Determinanten des unternehmerischen Erfolges aufzuzeigen, um ihnen dadurch eine Orientierungshilfe fur ihren eigenen Unternehmensaufbau zur Verfugung zu stellen. Gerade im Hinblick auf den Konkurrenzkampf junger Unternehmen um qualifizierte Mitarbeiter und Fremdkapital erscheint das Aufzeigen von Erfolgsfaktoren sinnvoll. Ferner konnen bereits bestehende Unternehmen die Ergebnisse der empirischen Untersuchung fur die Uberprufung strategischer Entscheidungen oder Neuausrichtungen nutzen. Der Arbeit liegt der Gedanke der Verbindung von theoretischer Forschung und praxisnahen Ergebnisse zugrunde.
