R80 Discovery Miles 800 Ships in 10 - 20 working days

A three-volume set of documentaries examining different aspects of the drug trade. 'Ecstasy Bandits' (2010), profiles the scientists responsible for the development of so-called 'designer drugs', including Ecstasy, in recent times. 'Cocaine Bandits' (2008), examines the way drug barons in the border region between the US and Mexico are increasingly using paramiltary forces to achieve their aims. Finally, 'Weed Bandits' (2003), examines both sides' views in the campaign to allow the planting of industrial hemp in the United States. In the pro camp, celebrity activists including Woody Harrelson, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ralph Nader put forward the argument that American farmers, already finding it hard to survive in today's economic climate, are being criminalised for going into competition with their rival synthetic manufacturers.

Photography - The Unfettered Image (Hardcover): Michelle Henning Photography - The Unfettered Image (Hardcover)
Michelle Henning
R4,137 Discovery Miles 41 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

We live in a time in which photographs have become extraordinarily mobile. They can be exchanged and circulated at the swipe of a finger across a screen. The digital photographic image appears and disappears with a mere gesture of the hand. Yet, this book argues that this mobility of the image was merely accelerated by digital media and telecommunications. Photographs, from the moment of their invention, set images loose by making them portable, reproducible, projectable, reduced in size and multiplied. The fact that we do not associate analogue photography with such mobility has much to do with the limitations of existing histories and theories of photography, which have tended to view photographic mobility as either an incidental characteristic or a fault. Photography : The Unfettered Image traces the emergence of these ways of understanding photography, but also presents a differently nuanced and materialist history in which photography is understood as part of a larger development of media technologies. It is situated in much broader cultural contexts: caught up in the European colonial ambition to "grasp the world" and in the development of a new, artificial "second nature" dependent on the large-scale processing of animal and mineral materials. Focussing primarily on Victorian and 1920s-30s practices and theories, it demonstrates how photography was never simply a technology for fixing a fleeting reality.

Museums, Media and Cultural Theory (Paperback, Ed): Michelle Henning Museums, Media and Cultural Theory (Paperback, Ed)

Museums can work to reproduce ideologies and confirm the existing order of things, or as instruments of social reform. Yet objects in museums can exceed their designated roles as documents or specimens. In this wideranging and original book, Michelle Henning explores how historical and contemporary museums and exhibitions restage the relationship between people and material things. In doing so, they become important sites for the development of new forms of experience, memory and knowledge. .

. Henning reveals how museums can be theorised as a form of media. She discusses both historical and contemporary examples, from cabinets of curiosity, through the avant-garde exhibition design of Lissitzy and Bayer; the experimental museums of Paul Otlet and Otto Neurath; to science centres; immersive and virtual museums; and major developments such as Guggenheim Bilbao, Tate Modern in London and the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. .

. "Museums, Media and Cultural Theory "is unique in its treatment of the museum as a media-form, and in its detailed and critical discussion of a wide range of display techniques. It is an indispensable introduction to some of the key ideas, texts and histories relevant to the museum in the 21st century. . .
