Jacob Michael King, the gifted young author of the book "Lesser Shadows" opens for us again a significant cultural and societal discourse; a discourse in fervent search of definite sanctity, with an inviolability much needed in an age of absolute civilized malaise. His verse brings to light that daunting task, which so many writers before him have taken to either botch of smarten in their attempt to shed light on the fragmented portrait of our unremitting existential crisis. His verse can be seen to stand boldly situated in the breach, among these discontinuities, giving rise again to these questions in a novel, organic, and refreshing way. King's verse addresses and fills a vacancy in culture in a generation where young voices are seemingly a thing of the past. We find, through his work, a significant, young, American intellectual voice. King's work here marks an appearance of a newly rising intellectual generation, one that abounds and wills to emerge-to be seen and reckoned with. It is not too late; as one generation departs, the time has come for a new generation to be brought into the light. King's work is here to incite and inspire his peers; to bring back, with a vengeance, the much needed vitality of poetry and prose in public culture.

The Framework of Criminal Justice (Hardcover): Michael King The Framework of Criminal Justice (Hardcover)
Michael King
R2,516 Discovery Miles 25 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In The Framework of Criminal Justice, originally published in 1981, the criminal justice process is analysed by using six models, each of which expresses a different justification for criminal justice and punishment: the due process model - exacting justice between equal parties; the crime control model - punishing wrong and preventing further crime; the bureaucratic model - controlling crime and criminals; the medical model - rehabilitating offenders; the status passage model - publicly denouncing the crime and criminal; and the power model - maintaining domination by the ruling class and reinforcing class values. The study examines the formal rules and procedures of the magistrate court system within the context of these models and also discusses the roles of the actors (police, defendant, magistrate, court clerks, and lawyers). Next, the study depicts eight scenes that occur from the defendant's arrest through a court hearing to sentencing. It assesses how closely the activity and behaviour within the system follow the formal protections granted by the British system of justice, and it concludes that the process is far more complex and the rules far more open to interpretation than is commonly believed. The book suggests that this miscalculation has led to the failure of various reforms - special attention is given to the Bail Reform Act of 1976 and two sections of the Criminal Law Act of 1977. It further suggests that real reform must depend upon an understanding of the political nature of the criminal justice system.

By exploring such diverse issues as the management of child abuse, legal reforms following sex abuse enquiries, moral explanations for the actions of child murderers, the impossible task faced by social workers and the limitations of children's rights campaigns, Michael King examines the revolutionary ideas of the social theorist, Niklas Luhmann. He demonstrates how Luhmann's theory of authopoietic systems compels readers to re-examine exactly what they mean by society.
Questioning the relationship between personal morality and political will, it challenges the assumption that changing society is merely a matter of changing attitudes and highlights the pitfalls associated with formulating social reform.

Perhaps more than any other social theorist in recent history, Niklas Luhmann's work has aroused extreme, and often antagonistic, responses. It has generated controversies about its political implications, its resolute anti-humanism and its ambitious critique of more established definitions of society, social theory and sociology. Now, however, a steadily growing number of scholars working in many different disciplines have begun to use aspects of Luhmann's sociology as an important methodological stimulus and as a theoretical framework for reorientating their studies. This collection of essays includes critical and reconstructive contributions by a number of distinguished social theorists, political theorists, legal scholars and empirical sociologists. Together, they provide evidence of Luhmann's extensive and diverse relevance to the issues facing contemporary society, and, at the same time, they enhance our understanding of the challenges posed by his theoretical paradigm to more traditional conceptions of social theory.

Since the first edition of Male Victims of Sexual Assault was published in 1992 there have been significant developments in our understanding of the prevalence and characteristics of the sexual assault of men. The first edition was influential in affording legal recognition to male victims of rape in England and Wales and this has resulted in raised awareness of the problem and improved attitudes among all those responsible for dealing with the victims. This recognition has gone some way to breaking down the taboo, and has allowed the discussion to move on and address the important issues of prevention, care and treatment. The book reports on the first epidemiological study of male sexual victimization in Europe, challenges the prevailing stereotype of gay men as sexual predators, covers the topic of male rape in prisons, examines the link between early sexual victimization and later perpetration, describes how victims of sexual torture attempt to process and resolve such experiences, provides the historical and anthropological background to the subject, and examines the impact of the changes in legislation. Mezey and King are experienced forensic psychiatrists with longstanding interests in domestic and sexual violence. They present original research material, which makes a unique contribution to our knowledge about men's experiences of sexual victimization.

Moko is written by Michael King, one of New Zealand's most celebrated historians, and photographed by Marti Friedlander, one of the country's most eminent photographers. One of New Zealand's iconic books, originally published in 1972, it was a milestone in New Zealand publishing. Maori subject matter was not thought to be of interest to the New Zealand public at that time, and the author and photographer were relative unknowns - Moko was their first book. To research this book, King and Friedlander travelled thousands of kilometres through the hinterland of New Zealand to find and speak with those who were tattooed, or with people who had first-hand knowledge of the custom. It is also the story of the last generation of Maori women who wore the traditional moko. Marti Friedlander's photographs illustrate with skill and compassion the moko itself, the women who wore it and the environments in which they lived.

Niklas Luhmann; Edited by Christian Morgner; Translated by Margaret Hiley, Michael King
R2,071 Discovery Miles 20 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Niklas Luhmann is now widely recognized as one of the most important social theorists of the twentieth century. While several of his key texts have been translated into English significant parts of Luhmann's extensive output remain unavailable to a non-German-speaking readership. His publication in four volumes on Gesellschaftsstruktur and Semantik (Social Structure and Semantics) 1980, 1981, 1989, 1995) together constitute an important part of his work as they not only represent his contribution to a sociology of knowledge and culture, but they also set out the empirical work that underpins the development of his theory of society. In The Making of Meaning, Christian Morgner brings together Luhmann's essential ideas from the four volume series. In this work, Luhmann presents a new empirical strategy that links the production of knowledge and culture to broader societal changes and the transformation of societal complexity. This volume provides insight into the development of Luhmann's theoretical ideas, revealing how his theory was driven by a broad range of detailed historical and comparative studies. Informing a wide range of disciplines, from sociology to history, from law to business studies, from philosophy to cultural studies, The Making of Meaning stands as a major contribution to the sociology of knowledge and the social history of ideas.
