This book draws together 13 distinctive and original explorations
of how dominant cultural mainstreams and margins are formed and
resisted, how they stabilize and shift, and how they permeate and
define each other. The chapters speak to central problems of
cultural politics that represent critical challenges for theory,
research, and action in the social world. The authors develop and
advance new approaches for interdisciplinary inquiry into
contemporary cultural issues. Drawing on and extending scholarship
in communication, political science, sociology, women's studies,
critical cultural studies, anthropology, and American studies, they
analyze what happens when marginal groups meet mainstream forces.
The chapters will enliven academic debates over what constitutes a
cultural mainstream or margin. This volume explores theories,
problems, and contemporary struggles over identity and
representation, ideology and hegemony, and discourse and action.
The essays focus on critical questions covering postcolonial
theory, primitivism, feminism, sexuality, the body, art,
multiculturalism, the environmental crisis, the mass media, and
social movements. The authors examine diverse issues, ranging from
the writing of women prisoners to how media policy is embedded in
cultural history, to the political implications of cultural
representations in cross-cultural contexts. Altogether, the
diversity and depth of the text will help us develop new and
complementary ways of thinking about critical questions in the
politics of culture.
The landscape of higher education (HE) has dramatically altered in
the past 30 years and it continues to evolve and change. More
students are entering HE and attending university or college on a
global scale than ever before. Supporting and enhancing the
undergraduate student experience across the student lifecycle, from
first contact through to alumni, is a critical activity in higher
education today not only to aid retention and progression but in a
highly competitive HE market, the quality of the student experience
is pivotal to an institution's ability to attract students. The
student experience encompasses all aspects of student life, i.e.
academic, social, welfare, with the academic imperative at the
heart of it. However, the increasing costs of delivering HE, a
reduction in government/ state funding and constraints on resources
means delivering a quality student experience has never been more
challenging for those working in HE. Staff at all levels, and
across all areas within an institution, are developing and
implementing initiatives to improve and enhance the student
experience whether they are at the coal face or on the periphery
thus making them a 'Practitioner' in the student experience. This
could include the admissions administrator improving the
information available for potential applicants; the academic
improving his/her feedback to students or central welfare
departments ensuring that their services are being advertised and
supported within a student's home unit
(faculty/department/school/course). In this book, the Editor,
Michelle Morgan describes how her new student experience
'Practitioner Model' provides an organised and more detailed
structure; guiding Practitioners in the identification of what they
have to deliver, who they need to deliver it to and when they need
to deliver it across her six key stages of the student lifecycle: *
First Contact and Admissions; * Pre-arrival; * Arrival and
Orientation; * Induction to Study; * Reorientation and Reinduction
(Returners' Induction) * Outduction (preparation for life after
undergraduate study). The Practioner Model offers a new way of
thinking in terms of delivering 'interlinked' academic, welfare and
support activities at the home unit and university level to support
the student in their university journey. This book also provides
working solutions to real problems in the form of exemplar case
studies from the UK and internationally, including chapters from
Liz Thomas, Di Nutt, Marcia Ody, Chris Keenan(UK), Mary Stuart
Hunter, (USA), Kerri-Lee Krause and Duncan Nulty (Australia). Good
practice must be adaptable and transferable because one size does
not fit all. It must also be cost effective. And here the authors
shows how practitioners can adapt and customise the 40 case studies
presented to help them not only improve and enhance the experience
of their undergraduate students in their own institution (both full
and part-time) but also to support their students' progression and
retention.
VOLUME ONE OF TWO. (VOLUME TWO AVAILABLE SEPARATELY.) France.
Germany. Italy. Russia. Poland. Czech Republic. Romania. Mexico.
Japan. Iran. All over the world -- everywhere except in the U.S. --
the legendary Jean Gabin continues to be considered one of the
greatest movie stars of all time.
In the U.S., Gabin is definitely considered to be a cult figure
(in 2002, twin Gabin festivals were presented at the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, and at the Walter Reade Theatres in New
York), but for the vast moviegoing public, and just like a lot of
the greats, he's fallen off of the radar.
That's about to change, however, because in 2008, Allenwood
Press presents the very first English-language (and two-volume)
book about Jean Gabin, ever. (There's not even an old, out-of-print
book about Gabin in English, if you can believe that ) It's WORLD'S
COOLEST MOVIE STAR: THE COMPLETE 95 FILMS (AND LEGEND) OF JEAN
GABIN by CHARLES ZIGMAN.
VOLUME ONE, which has been subtitled "Tragic Drifter," takes us
through Gabin's first forty-six films, including the
internationally renowned "Grand Illusion" and "Pepe Le Moko," a
period spanning the years 1930 to 1953, during which time he played
movie history's most famous tragic drifter. During the 1930s and
1940s, Gabin's popularity in the U.S. nearly eclipsed that of
Bogart, James Cagney, and Bette Davis. (Ever heard anybody say,
"Come with me to the Casbah. We will make ze beautiful muzeek
togezaire?" It was famously attributed to the character Jean Gabin
portrayed in the 1937 gangster classic "Pepe Le Moko," even though
he never actually uttered those words. In fact Gabin's 'Pepe'
character even inspired Warner Bros. to create its legendary
cartoon skunk, Pepe Le Pew, whose looks and voice were modeled on
the actor.)
The tone of the book is "fun," as opposed to "academic" and
"pretentious," and its goal is to introduce as many people as
possible to the films of Gabin; to that end, it's loaded with rare
photographs, many of which have never appeared even in previously
published French-language books about Gabin. This is a book for
Jean Gabin 'newbies' and 'completists' both: For the uninitiated,
there are some biography and 'intro' chapters, which place Gabin,
and his famous big-screen persona into perspective. For the
completists, author Charles Zigman has unpacked every single one of
Jean Gabin's ninety-five theatrical feature films -- even the more
than fifty pictures which have never been subtitled into English
before -- so that one can feel, by poring through the chapters,
that one is actually 'seeing' the films, firsthand. Excerpts from
newspapers written 'back in the day, ' both in the U.S. and in
Europe, demonstrate how prominent movie critics received Gabin's
pictures the day they were first released, in the 1930s through the
1970s.
In short this two-volume book is for everybody. Besides being
the first books about Jean Gabin in the English language ever,
WORLD'S COOLEST MOVIE STAR is also a first because it is the very
first 'filmography book' related to Gabin, in any language: Even in
France, where there have been many published biographies of Jean
Gabin, there has never been a book concentrating, in great detail
on each of the actor's ninety-five films. The legendary actress
Michele Morgan, who appeared with Gabin in five feature films, has
written the foreword to Volume One. ALSO AVAILABLE: VOLUME TWO
(ISBN # 978-0-9799722-1-8).

Early Modern Metaphysical Literature illuminates now-obscured aspects of cultural negotiation and denaturalization germane to numerous Metaphysical texts. Examining poetry and prose by Donne, Marvell, Lanyer, Crashaw, and Edward Herbert, this book challenges readers to recognize the provocative strangeness of these writings both in their original contexts and today.
'England? It seemed to be raining the whole time . . . Or maybe it
was me' MARILYN MONROE In July 1956, Marilyn Monroe arrived in
London, on honeymoon with her husband Arthur Miller, to make The
Sleeping Prince (later released as The Prince and the Showgirl)
with Laurence Olivier. When the couple arrived at London Airport,
they were looking forward to a peaceful stay. Marilyn would work
during the day at Pinewood Studios, while Arthur would write. Then,
in the evening, the couple would be able to relax together in their
private English country cottage. It didn't quite turn out that way.
The 'cottage' was actually a mansion, which belonged to Lord
Drogheda, the managing director of the Financial Times. Raised in
tiny hotel rooms and apartments, Marilyn felt herself being
watched. She was, by Lord Drogheda's servants, who were selling
stories to the papers. When filming began, it was a disaster.
Director Joshua Logan had written to Olivier, offering advice on
how to handle Marilyn as an actress, but Olivier ignored him.
Instead, he condescended to her in his introduction to the cast,
pooh-poohed her views on acting, and dismissed her stage-fright as
an inconvenience. Marilyn grew to hate Olivier with a passion; the
feeling was mutual. Marilyn found herself torn between settling
into married life, being a curiosity for the frequently hostile
British press, and her work on The Prince and the Showgirl. She
took solace in small acts of kindness from members of the public,
and a new fascination with Queen Elizabeth. Marilyn made a point of
adopting some of the Queen's favourite brands, buying gloves from
Cornelia James, perfume from Floris, and switching from Chanel No.
5 to Yardley's Lavender. Marilyn made a point of asking the film's
PR manager to add a royal meeting to her schedule, but each day
Olivier would delete the request. Michelle Morgan describes
Marilyn's trip to late-1950s' Britain in evocative detail,
exploring the making of the film alongside the film star's troubled
private life and her quest to meet the Queen.
For over forty years, George Gerbner has been one of the world's
most influential and prolific media scholars. His critical theories
and long-running research projects have changed the way we think
about media institutions, messages, and impacts. His work has
helped shape the academic discipline of communication and has
stimulated social movements to alter the cultural environment. This
book brings together for the first time a broad-based collection of
his writings on the role of media in terms of violence, eduction,
women and minorities, drugs and alcohol, science, religion, and
much more.
