Representing Agency in Popular Culture: Children and Youth on Page,
Screen and In-Between addresses the intersection of children's and
youth's agency and popular culture. As scholars in childhood
studies and beyond seek to expand understandings of agency, power,
and voice in children's lives, this book places popular culture and
representation as central to this endeavor. Core themes of family,
gender, temporality, politics, education, technology, disability,
conflict, identity, ethnicity, and friendship traverse across the
chapters, framed through various film, television, literature, and
virtual media sources. Here, childhood is considered far from
homogeneous and the dominance of neoliberal models of agency is
questioned by intersectional and intergenerational analyses. This
book posits there is vast power in popular culture representations
of children's agency, and interrogation of these themes through
interdisciplinary lenses is vital to furthering knowledge and
understanding about children's lives and within childhood studies.

Plants interact with a large number of microoganisms which have a
major impact on their growth either by establishing mutually
beneficial symbiotic relationships or by developing as pathogens at
the expense of the plant with deleterious effects. These
microorganisms differ greatly not only in their nature (viruses,
phytoplasmas, bacteria, fungi, nematodes, ... ) but also in the way
they contact, penetrate and invade their host. Histology and
cytology have brought an essential contribution to our knowledge of
these phenomena. They have told us for instance, how specialized
structures of the pathogen are often involved in the adhesion and
penetration into the plant, how the interface between both
organisms is finely arranged at the cellular level, or what
structural alterations affect the infected tissues. They have thus
set the stage for the investigations of the underlying molecular
mechanisms could be undertaken. Such investigations have been
remarkably successful in the recent years, expanding considerably
our understanding of plant-microorganism interactions in terms of
biochemical changes, rapid modifications of enzymatic activities,
coordinated gene activation, signal reception and transduction.
Biochemistry, molecular biology and cellular physiology have taken
precedence in the phytopathologist's set of methods.

This inspiring children's book is based on a South American
indigenous story about a courageous hummingbird who defies fear and
expectations in her attempt to save the forest from fire. The
illustrated story is supplemented by a natural and cultural history
of hummingbirds, as well as an inspiring message from Nobel Peace
Prize winner Wangari Maathai. The evocative artwork by
internationally renowned Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas
complements this optimistic tale that encourages everyone to take
responsibility for their home and the planet.
Hummingbirds have long been a symbol of wisdom and courage. In this
charming story, a hummingbird makes a valiant effort to put out a
raging fire that threatens her forest home -- trip after trip, her
beak is filled each time with just a drop of water. Her efforts
show her woodland companions that doing something -- anything -- is
better than doing nothing at all. The hummingbird parable, which
originates with the Quechuan people of South America, has become a
talisman for environmentalists and activists worldwide committed to
making meaningful change. This retelling, enlivened by Michael
Nicoll Yahgulanaas' fabulous Haida-manga illustrations, is suitable
for all ages of would-be activists. Although environmental
responsibility often seems like an overwhelming task, "The Flight
of the Hummingbird" shows how easy it is to start and how great the
effect could be if everyone just did what they could.
In a gorgeously illustrated exploration of the art of Michael
Nicoll Yahgulanaas, Mischief Making disproves any notion that play
is frivolous. Deploying mischievous tactics, Yahgulanaas shines a
spotlight on serious topics. As he investigates Indigenous and
other worldviews, the politics of land, cultural heritage, and
global ecology, his distinctive style stretches, twists, and flips
the formlines of classic Haida art to create imagery that resonates
with the graphic vitality of Asian manga. This engaging and
beautiful book delineates the philosophical underpinnings and
evolution of the artist's visual practice, revealing his deep
understanding of the seriousness of play.
Hydrometallurgy: Practice provides the necessary fundamental
background to the multidisciplinary field of hydrometallurgy and
provides the tools to be able to utilize the theory to
quantitatively describe, model and control the unit operations used
in hydrometallurgical plants. The book describes the development
and operation of processes utilizing hydrometallurgical operations.
It is a valuable resource and reference for researchers, academics,
students and industry professionals. The book focuses on
quantitative problem solving with many worked examples and focused
problems based on Nicol's many years' experience in the teaching of
hydrometallurgy to students, researchers and industry
professionals.

Touch Consciousness is an intimate collection of works depicting
the human psyche. An assortment of prose, poetry, fiction, and
non-fiction, these words are derived from memories and dreams- from
a pen held by a hand leaking half-truths and fabricated ideas. A
firm grip, a light graze, these are the touches I couldn't deny,
and these are the words that wouldn't stay inside.

There is more than just friendship, but are we really friends? We
do laugh together, but who else does he laugh with? I don't even
know why I am with him because all we have in common is _ _ _ I
feel like I'm wasting my time waiting for him to see me... I give
myself away and yet I haven't gotten anything in return, so why do
I still give? It's time to leave, but, am I done with him?
A Sociology of Soul is what I like to call...Samurai Sociology. I
coined this term to distinguish a type of Sociology that takes an
unflinching look...a hard cold appraisal of our current social
condition. The perspective takes No prisoners and makes No excuses
for the state of the individual within the fabric of our
Information Society. Samurai Sociology examines the social web and
its impact on individual choices and the Resultant Behavior.
Samurai Sociology asks questions like: Are we prisoners of our own
device? What is the structure and shape of our cage? How do we
begin to get free? What price must we pay for freedom? Who or what
controls the Social Matrix?
