The Old Gays’ Guide to the Good Life (Hardcover): Mick Peterson, Bill Lyons, Robert Reeves, Jessay Martin The Old Gays’ Guide to the Good Life (Hardcover)
Mick Peterson, Bill Lyons, Robert Reeves, Jessay Martin
R385 Discovery Miles 3 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

‘I’ve fallen in love with this fabulous foursome … They are a phenomenon!’ Drew Barrymore The Old Gays are beloved for their TikTok videos where they dance, serve, throwback and generally don’t take themselves too seriously. But as four gay men of a certain age, they have lived through decades of momentous change for the LGBTQ+ community. Now, Robert, Mick, Jessay and Bill want to tell the unfiltered stories of their lives. And as in their videos, the Old Gays don’t hold back. They grew up in the closet, experienced Stonewall, lived large during the gay sexual revolution, tragically lost most of their friends during the AIDS crisis (Mick and Robert are HIV+), and saw gay marriage became legal. They’ve been through it all – divorce, depression, bankruptcy, near-death experiences. And then there’s the dinner parties, the nudism, the professional bodybuilding, the orgies and the matter of church. The Old Gays Guide to the Good Life is a celebration of lives lived to the fullest, and an exuberant book of advice. Whether it’s ageing, coming out, losing everything, starting over, finding happiness or just injecting a little more fun into proceedings – it’s good to know someone’s been there before, and they’re more than happy to give their best, bawdiest, most hard-won advice.

From America's most beloved foursome--the TikTok sensation @theoldgays--a book of unexpected aspirational advice and inspirational stories drawn from their decades of living, from pre-Stonewall to the rise of the LGBTQ+ movement to gay marriage and beyond. Ranging in age from 67 to 80, Mick, Jessay, Robert, and Bill are the real-life Golden Girls of the social media era, a quartet of old gays whose hard-won confidence and awesome authenticity have taken the culture by storm. They are America's beloved Queens--and more importantly, they are survivors whose lives have been transformed by sweeping cultural change. In this fabulously fun and entertaining book, they share their stories--humorous, heartbreaking, shocking, and profound tales which only older gay men can tell. It was their generation that was devastated by AIDS, a health crisis that deprived us of so many brilliant, creative lives, including many of their friends. In this delightful group memoir, Mick, Jessay, Robert, and Bill intimately reveal all about their lives, revealing who they are beyond TikTok, where they came from, and how they found each other. They offer their collective wisdom on a rainbow of topics, including coming out, sex, gay liberation, gay marriage, AIDS, aging, and saving the best act for last. Outrageous and hilarious, refreshingly earnest and unfiltered, engaging and insightful, they've been through it all--harassment, divorce, depression, bankruptcy, even near-death experiences. Between the four of them, there's not much of life they haven't seen or done, and now they dish on everything from fitness and fabulous dinner parties to church and orgies. An intimate and moving portrait of four friends who have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly--and look forward to the best that is still to come, The Old Gays Guide to the Good Life is a celebration of lives lived to the fullest--sometimes against all odds--and a lesson for all of us that age is just a number and that getting older can be outrageously fun. The Old Gay Guys Guide to the Good Life features a full-color photo insert.

With the prospect of a career-changing opportunity looming, along with a series of other challenges that pop up during the week, Coach Ben Reynolds zeroes in on preparing his Hillmen squad for trying to pull off one of the greatest upsets in his coaching career and a berth in the State Championship game. However... . Bubba Brown is back--vengeful, desperate, and determined to ruin the man he feels responsible for his demise, Hillsdale High School football coach Ben Reynolds. . Jeremy Johnson, once a part-time starter for the Hillmen early in the season, has other goals on his mind, primarily head varsity manager Jennifer Kirby. Yet, his recklessness and audacity create another threat to the squad as they prepare for their ultimate challenge. . Running back and linebacker Matt Gerard, a steadying influence both on and off the field for Hillsdale, must choose what's best for him or what's best for his team, as they face a semi-final opponent like no other. The Hillsdale Hillmen's team slogan for the season, Carpe Diem (Seize the Day), provides the backdrop for this third and final installment of the Hillsdale trilogy. When opportunity beckons, people become judged as to how they respond at that moment. It's no different in Hillsdale, with the chance to be the first team in school history to play for the State Title staring at them right in their faces. How will they respond?

Homecoming Dress-up days, the bonfire and pep rally, the parade, the royalty, the alumni, and, most of all, the game---all of the pageantry and hoopla connected with a high school Homecoming provides the background for Mick Peterson's second novel Homecoming, a continuation of the story begun in Once a Coach. After that thrilling opening win against Valley Forge, the Hillsdale Hillmen have struggled, losing two of their last three games and in danger of the missing the state playoffs. Their suspended coach Ben Reynolds is also having his own personal troubles, trying to deal with the fact that he must serve his punishment handed down by the state and remain on the sidelines, not being able to help. Others in Hillsdale are also experiencing difficulties, specifically members of the football team and cheerleading squad, while the school tries to use the momentum of the week's festivities to regain the edge that Hillsdale has always been noted for. However, it's a mystery man from Hillsdale's past needing his own Homecoming experience who emerges as a Good Samaritan, giving all of the Hillmen a chance to straighten matters out. Hillsdale is a typical Midwestern town whose high school has a rich football tradition and a favorite eatery, The Cabin. After a long, successful career, Coach Ben Reynolds' plans to retire after the upcoming season get interrupted when the State Athletic Association, under the direction of newly named assistant Jason Stone, investigates Reynolds over allegations that he illegally recruited a player from Willow Brook High School, Jack Norton. Bubba Brown, whose son Brad had fumbled in a critical playoff game the year before when he had lived in Hillsdale, has moved his son to nearby Valley Forge because he blamed Reynolds for not naming his son co-captain for the upcoming season. Valley Forge is the opening game for Hillsdale, and Brown feels the best way for his son to get a scholarship is to beat Hillsdale and get even with Reynolds. As the investigation continues through the summer, Bubba suddenly returns to Hillsdale one morning to The Cabin to taunt the patrons. When he insults his waitress, Rachel Sawyer, and then Coach Reynolds, his breakfast is dumped on his lap by Jeff Fairchild, a member of the Hillsdale team and a cook at The Cabin. The embarrassed Brown leaves and gets involved in a hit-and-run accident with Coach Reynolds' wife, Julie. Reynolds is then faced with the challenges of his wife's recovery, the rumors and innuendos regarding the Norton situation. Also, despite the evidence collected by Stone, the State's decision forces him to watch the opening game from behind the fence, making him wonder if everything he has worked for has been worth it, while Bubba Brown sits in the Valley Forge bleachers cheering his son. The result of this opening game provides a huge impact on the coach's future.
