Football is so much more than the billionaire owners and eye-watering signing fees that dominate the headlines. Look beyond the Premiership and the World Cup, the sublime brilliance of Messi and Mbappé, and you’ll find a story unparalleled in the world of sport.
From England, France and Germany to Palestine, South Africa and Brazil, A People’s History of Football reveals how the ‘beautiful game’ has been a powerful instrument of emancipation for workers, feminists, anti-colonialist activists, young people and protesters around the world.
Countering the clichés about football fans, Mickaël Correia dives into football countercultures born after the Second World War, from English hooligans to the ultras who played a central role in the ‘Arab Spring’. And with chapters on anti-fascism, the women’s game, and the rise in community-owned clubs, Correia reminds us that football can be a powerful social and political force – as generous as it is subversive.

During the 1990s Francis Fukuyama announced the end of history. The
2000s showed how it is an illusion to imagine a peaceful world
without conflict. In this book the authors explore how six major
constraints are set to fix the trajectory of the global economy.
Three of them are new: the aging population, the failure of
technical progress, and the scarcity of savings. The other three
have been at work for some time: the explosion of inequality, the
mass transfer of activities from one end of the world to the other,
and the limitless financialization of economy. They suggest that
like seismic activity which depends on pressure between tectonic
plates, the political and social tensions will be exacerbated in
the coming years by these major forces. They propose that
authorities will be incapable of preventing neither the date nor
the intensity of the coming earthquakes, and ask the question: Are
we able to cope with these future shocks and the violence they are
sure to cause?

Enediynes are natural products with highly active cytotoxicity and
antibacterial activity, and thus have significant potential in the
development of anti-cancer treatments. However, they are not
readily available and can degrade rapidly during isolation; one
solution is to produce them using total synthesis. Dynemicin A and
uncialamycin are two such enediynes, with similar structures, for
which total synthesis has been achieved. This book presents the
isolation and preparation of these two compounds and their
analogues through various synthesis strategies. Details of the
structural elements essential to their anti-cancer activity are
presented, with the objective of explaining and optimizing their
biological activities and potential development as drugs.

This first volume is concerned with the analytic derivation of
explicit formulas for the leading-order Taylor approximations of
(local) stochastic invariant manifolds associated with a broad
class of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations. These
approximations take the form of Lyapunov-Perron integrals, which
are further characterized in Volume II as pullback limits
associated with some partially coupled backward-forward systems.
This pullback characterization provides a useful interpretation of
the corresponding approximating manifolds and leads to a simple
framework that unifies some other approximation approaches in the
literature. A self-contained survey is also included on the
existence and attraction of one-parameter families of stochastic
invariant manifolds, from the point of view of the theory of random
dynamical systems.
In this second volume, a general approach is developed to provide
approximate parameterizations of the "small" scales by the "large"
ones for a broad class of stochastic partial differential equations
(SPDEs). This is accomplished via the concept of parameterizing
manifolds (PMs), which are stochastic manifolds that improve, for a
given realization of the noise, in mean square error the partial
knowledge of the full SPDE solution when compared to its projection
onto some resolved modes. Backward-forward systems are designed to
give access to such PMs in practice. The key idea consists of
representing the modes with high wave numbers as a pullback limit
depending on the time-history of the modes with low wave numbers.
Non-Markovian stochastic reduced systems are then derived based on
such a PM approach. The reduced systems take the form of stochastic
differential equations involving random coefficients that convey
memory effects. The theory is illustrated on a stochastic
Burgers-type equation.
'Fascinating ... so enlightening that suddenly maths doesn't seem
so fearsome as it once did' SIMON WINCHESTER From Aristotle to Ada
Lovelace: a brief history of the mathematical ideas that have
forever changed the world and the everyday people and pioneers
behind them. The story of our best invention yet. From our ability
to calculate the passing of time to the algorithms that control
computers and much else in our lives, numbers are everywhere. They
are so indispensable that we forget how fundamental they are to our
way of life. In this international bestseller, Mickael Launay mixes
history and anecdotes from around the world to reveal how
mathematics became pivotal to the story of humankind. It is a
journey into numbers with Launay as a guide. In museums, monuments
or train stations, he uses the objects around us to explain what
art can reveal about geometry, how Babylonian scholars developed
one of the first complex written languages, and how 'Arabic'
numbers were adopted from India. It All Adds Up also tells the
story of how mapping the trajectory of an eclipse has helped to
trace the precise day of one of the oldest battles in history, how
the course of the modern-day Greenwich Meridian was established,
and why negative numbers were accepted just last century. This book
is a vital compendium of the great men and women of mathematics
from Aristotle to Ada Lovelace, which demonstrates how mathematics
shaped the written word and the world. With clarity, passion and
wisdom, the author unveils the unexpected and at times
serendipitous ways in which big mathematical ideas were created.
Supporting the belief that - just like music or literature - maths
should be accessible to everyone, Launay will inspire a new
fondness for the numbers that surround us and the rich stories they
contain.

Preserved in a single manuscript in the British library, the Life
of Saint Audrey or Vie Seinte Audree is the story of an Anglo-Saxon
princess, who, though twice married, remains a virgin until her
death. The text is a fine example of what some critics have called
a hagiographical romance?a saint's life that borrows many
characteristics from secular romance. Written in the late twelfth
or early thirteenth century, the Vie Seinte Audree is published
here for the first time in English, along with the Old French text.
The editors of this new edition provide helpful material on the
life of the historical Saint Audrey and her Anglo-Saxon world. They
also discuss women's writing in Anglo-Norman England as well as the
subject of spiritual marriage. In addition, they examine secondary
sources that have focused on the Vie Seinte Audree. A map of
seventh-century England, a table of proper names and a genealogical
chart of the Royal Lineage of Saint Audrey are all included.
puter system. In 1971 one computer system had a Pascal compiler. By
1974 the number had grown to 10 and in 1979 there were more than
80. Pascal is always available on those ubiquitous breeds of
computer systems: personal computers andl professional
workstations. Questions arising out of the Southampton Symposium on
Pascal in 1977 [Reference 10] began the first organized effort to
write an officially sanctioned, international Pascal Standard.
Participants sought to consolidate the list of questions that
naturally arose when people tried to implement Pascal compilers
using definitions found in the Pascal User Manual and Report. That
effort culminated in the ISO 7185 Pascal Standard [Reference 11]
which officially defines Pascal and necessitated the revision of
this book. We have chosen to modify the User Manual and the Report
with respect to the Standard - not to make this book a substitute
for the Standard. As a result this book retains much of its
readability and elegance which, we believe, set it apart from the
Standard. We updated the syntactic notation to Niklaus Wirth's EBNF
and improved the style of programs in the User Manual. For the
convenience of readers familiar with previous editions of this
book, we have included Appendix E which summarizes the changes
necessitated by the Standard.
