Miguel Gonzalez-Gerth, an esteemed translator, poet, editor, and
professor emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin, has been
publishing his original English and Spanish poetry since 1946. Born
in Mexico City in 1926, Gonzalez-Gerth moved to the United States
in 1940 and made it his permanent home. He received his B.A. from
the University of Texas in 1950 and a PhD from Princeton in 1973,
and taught at UT for over thirty years.
Editor David Colon has compiled a selection of Gonzalez-Gerth's
poems that demonstrate the range of interests, themes, and styles
that span more than a century of a life dedicated to Hispanic
literature studies. The poems in this collection are arranged
chronologically, exhibiting "the different phases of a poet's life
as well as different historical moments and literary traditions."
Many of the poems appear with side-by-side translation,
demonstrating not only the creativity born of a unique cultural
perspective, but the profound understanding and commitment to the
process of translation, taking a poem through its original written
language, rethinking the words, allusions, connotations, and
presenting it in a different language and tradition.
"He has two guiding principles as a translator of poetry: to keep
the languages distinct, and to approach the act of reproduction as
an art form itself. In the end, the translation must work on the
terms of its own language. It is more important for it to be a
successful poem than a faithful copy," writes Colon in the
introduction. "Between Day and Night" provides a record of
Gonzalez-Gerth's achievement as a poet and translator, a writer who
stays true to the languages and poetic styles of Latin America and
Anglo-America, and "work s] with essentially two minds."
This book presents the core concepts of geographical education as a
means of understanding global issues from a spatial perspective. It
treats education, supported by high standards, approaches,
methodologies, and resources, as essential in exploring the
interactions of the world's human and environmental systems at
local, regional, and global scales embedded in the nature of the
discipline of geography. It covers topics such as climate change,
sustainable development goals, geopolitics in an uncertain world,
global crisis, and population flows, which are of great interest to
geography researchers and social sciences educators who want to
explore the complexity of contemporary societies. Highly respected
scholars in geography education answer questions on key topics and
explain how global understanding is considered in K-12 education in
significant countries around the globe. The book discusses factors
such as the Internet, social media, virtual globes and other
technological developments that provide insights into and
visualization - in real time - of the intensity of relationships
between different countries and regions of the earth. It also
examines how this does not always lead to empathy with other
political, cultural, social and religious values: terrorism threats
and armed conflicts are also essential features of the global
world. This book opens the dialogue for global understanding as a
great opportunity for teachers, educators, scholars and policy
makers to better equip students and future citizens to deal with
global issues.

One of the charms of mathematics is the contrast between its
generality and its applicability to concrete, even everyday,
problems. Branching processes are typical in this. Their niche of
mathematics is the abstract pattern of reproduction, sets of
individuals changing size and composition through their members
reproducing; in other words, what Plato might have called the pure
idea behind demography, population biology, cell kinetics,
molecular replication, or nuclear ?ssion, had he known these
scienti?c ?elds. Even in the performance of algorithms for sorting
and classi?cation there is an inkling of the same pattern. In
special cases, general properties of the abstract ideal then
interact with the physical or biological or whatever properties at
hand. But the population, or bran- ing, pattern is strong; it tends
to dominate, and here lies the reason for the extreme usefulness of
branching processes in diverse applications. Branching is a clean
and beautiful mathematical pattern, with an intellectually
challenging intrinsic structure, and it pervades the phenomena it
underlies.

This volume gathers papers originally presented at the 3rd Workshop
on Branching Processes and their Applications (WBPA15), which was
held from 7 to 10 April 2015 in Badajoz, Spain
(http://branching.unex.es/wbpa15/index.htm). The papers address a
broad range of theoretical and practical aspects of branching
process theory. Further, they amply demonstrate that the
theoretical research in this area remains vital and topical, as
well as the relevance of branching concepts in the development of
theoretical approaches to solving new problems in applied fields
such as Epidemiology, Biology, Genetics, and, of course, Population
Dynamics. The topics covered can broadly be classified into the
following areas: 1. Coalescent Branching Processes 2. Branching
Random Walks 3. Population Growth Models in Varying and Random
Environments 4. Size/Density/Resource-Dependent Branching Models 5.
Age-Dependent Branching Models 6. Special Branching Models 7.
Applications in Epidemiology 8. Applications in Biology and
Genetics Offering a valuable reference guide to contemporary
branching process theory, the book also explores many open
problems, paving the way for future research.

There are many words I can use to describe myself and what led to
the writing of this poetry book, MyStyle Poetry but I want to use
one and that word is, prison. I am not going to sit here and
justify anything or say I was wrongfully convicted, blah blah blah
but I will say, I, Miguel Gonzalez, spent over a decade trying to
get out of a crazy situation; trying to get out of the prison
system I put myself into. My words come from behind the wall. I was
the one who put in work, I got my hands dirty, fought the police,
was involved in riots, gang wars, fights, stabbings, some I got
caught for and a lot I got away with. Basically, I put in work and
I was and still am respected in the New Jersey prison system. I am
not writing this to big myself up, no, in fact I am writing this to
state the opposite. I am writing this to state that I been there
done that with my head high and my pride intact but all I got out
of it, at the end of the day was a longer bid and a few scare's
about whether or not I would ever see day light again, the streets
again, my freedom. But I am here, free, and I am taking advantage
of my freedom to show off my determination to be who I want to be,
not who society defines me as; an ex-con. I write to inspire people
of my struggle, these poems are real. Whether you can connect or
not one thing you can understand is that I like many other people
within the prison system are very much alive. And though there are
a lot of crazy, evil minded, twisted sort of people behind the
wall, there are also those who just want to figure a way out of the
system, to get their life together in such a way they do not have
to worry about anyone thing, especially the cops knocking down
their door or the door of their family member to put them into
handcuffs. Life is not easy for most of us, I just want to express
a bit of my life in this book of poems, my first book, to say what
I meant to say in the best way I know how.
La armonia, la paz y la felicidad, solo se logran por una gracia
especial que resulta de buenos propositos, de los buenos proyectos,
del trabajo; y de acciones honestas, y humildes que tengan un toque
de misericordia, de razon y de justicia.
