Miguel Hernandez is, along with Antonio Machado, Juan Ramon Jimenez, and Federico Garcia Lorca, one of the greatest Spanish poets of the twentieth century. Lorca wrote to the young poet in 1933, telling him to stop struggling to get along in a 'circle of literary pigs'. After fighting on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War, Hernandez was imprisoned in several of Franco's jails, where he continued to write until his death from untreated tuberculosis on 28 March 1942: he was only 31. Miguel Hernandez is now one of the most revered poets in the Spanish-speaking world. From his early formalism, paying homage to Gongora and Quevedo, to the final poems, which are passionate and bittersweet, Hernandez' work is a dazzling reminder that force can never defeat spirit, and that courage is its own reward. THE PRISON POEMS is the first complete translation into English of Miguel Hernandez's Cancionero y romancero de ausencias, a classic of twentieth century Spanish poetry, comparable in many respects to the work of Lorca and Pablo Neruda. The poems in this book were mostly written while Hernandez was in prison after the defeat of Republican Spain. Although he was totally involved in the Republican cause, its defeat did not lead to bitterness on his part. The poems are profoundly human, rising beyond political ideology, constantly striving toward a redemptive vision of the human condition.

In the Spanish-speaking world, Miguel Hernandez is regarded as one of the most important poets of the twentieth century-equal in distinction to Federico Garcia Lorca, Pablo Neruda, and Octavio Paz. He has never received his just acclaim, however, in the English-speaking world, a victim of the artistic oppression exercised during the period of Francisco Franco's totalitarian regime.
