This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 8th Metadata
and Semantics Research Conference, MTSR 2014, held in Karlsruhe,
Germany, in November 2014. The 23 full papers and 9 short papers
presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 57 submissions.
The papers are organized in several sessions and tracks. They cover
the following topics: metadata and linked data: tools and models;
(meta) data quality assessment and curation; semantic
interoperability, ontology-based data access and representation;
big data and digital libraries in health, science and technology;
metadata and semantics for open repositories, research information
systems and data infrastructure; metadata and semantics for
cultural collections and applications; semantics for agriculture,
food and environment.
This is an edited volume based on the 2007 Conference on
Metadata and Semantics Research (MTSR), now in its second meeting.
Metadata research is a pluri-disciplinary field that encompasses
all aspects of the definition, creation, assessment, management and
use of metadata. The volume brings together world class leaders to
contribute their research and up-to-date information on metadata
and semantics applied to library management, e-commerce,
e-business, information science and librarianship, to name a few.
The book is designed for a professional audience composed of
researchers and practitioners in industry.
This volume collects the papers selected for presentation at the
Third Inter- tional Conference on Metadata and Semantic Research
(MTSR 2009), held in Milan at the University of Milano-Bicocca
(October 1-2, 2009).

This book constitutes selected and revised papers presented at the
First International Conference on Electronic Governance with
Emerging Technologies, EGETC 2022, held in Tampico, Mexico, in
September 2022. The 15 full papers and 2 short papers presented
were thoroughly reviewed and selected from the 54 submissions. This
volume focuses on the recent developmentsin the domain of
eGovernment and governance of digital organizations also aims to
shed light on the emerging research trends and their applications.
This book addresses the need to explore user interaction with
online learning repositories and the detection of emergent
communities of users. This is done through investigating and mining
the Khan Academy repository; a free, open access, popular online
learning repository addressing a wide content scope. It includes
large numbers of different learning objects such as instructional
videos, articles, and exercises. The authors conducted descriptive
analysis to investigate the learning repository and its core
features such as growth rate, popularity, and geographical
distribution. The authors then analyzed this graph and explored the
social network structure, studied two different community detection
algorithms to identify the learning interactions communities
emerged in Khan Academy then compared between their effectiveness.
They then applied different SNA measures including modularity,
density, clustering coefficients and different centrality measures
to assess the users' behavior patterns and their presence. By
applying community detection techniques and social network
analysis, the authors managed to identify learning communities in
Khan Academy's network. The size distribution of those communities
found to follow the power-law distribution which is the case of
many real-world networks. Despite the popularity of online learning
repositories and their wide use, the structure of the emerged
learning communities and their social networks remain largely
unexplored. This book could be considered initial insights that may
help researchers and educators in better understanding online
learning repositories, the learning process inside those
repositories, and learner behavior.

This book constitutes the post-conference proceedings of the
International Workshop on Ontology, Conceptualization and
Epistemology for Information Systems, Software Engineering and
Service Sciences (ONTOSE 2010), held at the CAiSE 2010 conference
in Hammamet, Tunisia, June, 2010. The 10 papers presented in this
volume were carefully revised and selected from 25 submissions.
They are grouped in sections on enterprise and service
architectures, ontology applications, ontology visualization and
query expansion, and ontologies for services.
Although the standards in electronic health records and general
healthcare services continue to evolve, many organisations push to
connect interoperability with public service and basic citizenship
rights. This poses significant technical and organisational
challenges that are the focus of many research and standardisation
efforts. Interoperability in Healthcare Information Systems:
Standards, Management and Technology provides a comprehensive
collection on the overview of electronic health records and health
services interoperability and the different aspects representing
its outlook in a framework that is useful for practitioners,
researchers, and decision-makers.
Metadata research has emerged as a discipline cross-cutting many
domains, focused on the provision of distributed descriptions
(often called annotations) to Web resources or applications. Such
associated descriptions are supposed to serve as a foundation for
advanced services in many application areas, including search and
location, personalization, federation of repositories and automated
delivery of information. Indeed, the Semantic Web is in itself a
concrete technological framework for ontology-based metadata. For
example, Web-based social networking requires metadata describing
people and their interrelations, and large databases with
biological information use complex and detailed metadata schemas
for more precise and informed search strategies. There is a wide
diversity in the languages and idioms used for providing
meta-descriptions, from simple structured text in metadata schemas
to formal annotations using ontologies, and the technologies for
storing, sharing and exploiting meta-descriptions are also diverse
and evolve rapidly. In addition, there is a proliferation of
schemas and standards related to metadata, resulting in a complex
and moving technological landscape - hence, the need for
specialized knowledge and skills in this area. The Handbook of
Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies is intended as an authoritative
reference for students, practitioners and researchers, serving as a
roadmap for the variety of metadata schemas and ontologies
available in a number of key domain areas, including culture,
biology, education, healthcare, engineering and library science.
