Ageing as a Migrant - Vulnerabilities, Agency and Policy Implications (Paperback): Ruxandra Oana Ciobanu, Tineke Fokkema,... Ageing as a Migrant - Vulnerabilities, Agency and Policy Implications (Paperback)
Ruxandra Oana Ciobanu, Tineke Fokkema, Mihaela Nedelcu
R1,284 Discovery Miles 12 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Motivated by the steady increase in the population of older migrants worldwide, this book acknowledges the diversity within this population group and provides an interdisciplinary and multi-level approach for studying older migrants' strategies to overcome vulnerability. The book brings together original research on the topics of diversity among older migrants, social vulnerability, loneliness, (transnational) care and support networks. Based on a review of the growing literature on the topic of older migrants and anchored in the empirical findings discussed in the chapters, the book puts forward a general approach to study older migrants as social actors who develop strategies to surpass vulnerabilities. As documented by empirical research, older migrants mobilise their resources and are able to deal with structural opportunities and restrictions operating at meso and macro levels. These strategies are placed at the intersection between family obligations and resources, social networks, and migration and care regimes. The interdisciplinary and multi-level research in this book acknowledges the heterogeneity within the population of older migrants and puts forward research results that have implications for policies targeting the growing population of older migrants. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Childhood and Parenting in Transnational Settings (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018): Viorela Ducu,... Childhood and Parenting in Transnational Settings (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Viorela Ducu, Mihaela Nedelcu, Aron Telegdi Csetri
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes children and youth on the one hand and parents on the other within the newly configured worlds of transnational families. Focus is put on children born abroad, brought up abroad, studying abroad, in vulnerable situations, and/or subject of trafficking. The book also provides insight into the delicate relationships that arise with parents, such as migrant parents who are parenting from a distance, elderly parents supporting migrant adult children, fathers left behind by migration, and Eastern-European parents in Nordic countries. It also touches upon life strategies developed in response to migration situations, such as the transfer of care, transnational (virtual) communication, common visits (to and from), and the co-presence of family members in each other's (distant) lives. As such this book provides a wealth of information for researchers, policy makers and all those working in the field of migration and with migrants. The chapter 'Afterword: Gender Practices in Transnational Families' is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license via link.springer.com.
