Five Characters in Search of a Good Night's Sleep (Paperback): Mike Alfreds, Sonja Linden Five Characters in Search of a Good Night's Sleep (Paperback)
Mike Alfreds, Sonja Linden
R255 Discovery Miles 2 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Five insomniacs try to make it through the night. From dusk to dawn, they struggle with a crisis in their lives which they must resolve by morning. Increasingly conscious of their shortening futures and lengthening pasts, they fill their nights with distracting activities, desperate sleep techniques, evaluations of their lives, delusions, fears, panics and utter foolishness as they prepare to face the day. Five Characters in Search of a Good Night's Sleep was conceived in response to the current public-health crisis of insomnia, with 30% of the UK population suffering from some form of sleep disturbance. It was created through a series of workshops, and first produced by ViSiBLE Theatre Ensemble at Southwark Playhouse, London, in 2022, directed by acclaimed director Mike Alfreds.  ViSiBLE is dedicated to creating performance work that throws fresh perspectives on later life and living longer. Their work is created collaboratively, drawing on the creativity and talent of Britain's huge wealth of experienced older actors. The play is a fascinating insight into a condition that is widely experienced but little understood, and will provide valuable material for other actors – especially older ones – to perform.

A top-ranking director sets out his rehearsal techniques in this invaluable handbook for actors and directors. Mike Alfreds' Different Every Night is the culmination of a lifetime of work in the theatre, the most complete rehearsal methodology in print since Stanislavsky. It offers a vital masterclass for actors and directors, full of sound practical advice and guidance, and is packed with techniques for bringing the text to life and keeping it alive - both in rehearsal and performance. 'Most of what I am as an actress I owe to Mike Alfreds. He gave me the language and the tools I needed for my craft' Pam Ferris, from her Foreword 'If I was allowed to train again to be an actor, but I was only allowed one teacher, it would have to be Mike Alfreds. To me he is a genius when it comes to acting and storytelling' Mark Rylance

Then What Happens? - Storytelling and Adapting for the Theatre (Paperback): Mike Alfreds Then What Happens? - Storytelling and Adapting for the Theatre (Paperback)
Mike Alfreds
R536 Discovery Miles 5 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A practical investigation into story-theatre and the art of telling stories through theatre, by the renowned director who founded Shared Experience Theatre Company. In Then What Happens?, Mike Alfreds makes the case for putting story and storytelling back at the heart of theatre. He explores the whole process of adapting for the stage, and investigates the particular techniques - many of them highly sophisticated - that actors require when performing 'story-theatre'. The book includes over two hundred exercises, improvisations and workshops dealing with the practical aspects of story-theatre, such as building an ensemble, creating a physical vocabulary, and transforming written narrative into drama. It draws on examples ranging from traditional legends and folklore, through the works of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Evelyn Waugh, to contemporary fiction. Alfreds shows how each story demands its own particular set of dramatic choices, opening up endless possibilities for performance. Then What Happens? - like the author's tremendously successful first book, Different Every Night - will be invaluable to directors and actors, to dramatists working in the field of adaptation, to those devising and working from improvisation, and to any theatregoer who has been moved by the power of an unfolding story to ask: 'Then what happens?' 'All theatre directors know that good narrative is the secret of good theatre, but few have as distinctive, rigorous and exceptional a method of exploring that secret as does Mike Alfreds. His system of working, and his thoughts on the making of theatre in our time, are as crucial and illuminating as those of Stanislavsky and Peter Brook have been to generations of theatre enthusiasts and practitioners.' Michael Coveney

The Suprise of Love (Paperback): Pierre De Marivaux The Suprise of Love (Paperback)
Pierre De Marivaux; Translated by Mike Alfreds
R315 Discovery Miles 3 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The beautiful Marquise has been left a widow tragically young... The handsome chevalier has been deserted by the love of his life who has decided to take holy orders... Both have sworn never to lose their hearts again... Neither had reckoned with the surprise of love. Marivaux was the most important French playwright of the 18th Century. Considered by his contemporaries as 'the doctor of the human heart', he wrote many comedies for the Comedie-Francaise and the Comedie-Italienne in Paris. This will be the first time this version of Marivaux's The Surprise of Love will have been seen by a British audience.

How many people can truly say that they know the history of the city in which they live? It is true to say that for most of us who live in Johannesburg, the rich political and social history, and the many fascinations of the city, remain hidden. In Johannesburg Portraits Mike Alfred tells the story of Johannesburg through the lives of a group of prominent Johannesburg citizens both living and dead. The people featured, from Lionel and Florrie Phillips through to Philip Tobias, Lionel Abrahams and Sibongile Khumalo, have all lived through stimulating, often turbulent times. And every one of them has contributed and continues to contribute, to Johannesburg's cultural heritage. Every story tells the reader as much about the city's geography, its economic, political and social history, as it does about each vibrant personality.
