Post-war British comedy in which a soldier returns to his home
village and the family tavern now at threat from an unscrupulous
rival. When pub owner George Harper (George Formby) arrives back in
Britain his first thought is to return to the village of Tumbleford
and his pub, The Unicorn. Unfortunately for George, the manager of
the village's other pub, The Lion, has taken advantage of his
absence to steal his customers and even seems suspiciously close to
George's childhood sweetheart, Mary (Rosalyn Boulter). Can George
find a way to win back Mary and his customers?
In April 1989 a series of citizen uprisings began throwing off the
yoke of communism in Eastern Europe. In Poland, Czechoslovakia,
Hungary, East Germany and Bulgaria, dictators were forced to
abdicate - all bloodlessly. Then came Romania. During the week
leading up to Christmas, students and factory workers took to the
streets. So did dictator Nicolae Ceasusescu's tanks, armored
personnel carriers, soldiers and secret police. Blood soon was
staining the streets of cities across the nation. Determined
protesters would be shot, bayoneted, crushed - with thousands
killed or wounded. Terror and torture gave way to courage and an
abiding yearning for freedom in a season forgotten elsewhere around
the world.
A boyhood buddy tried flipping himself into a beanbag chair, became
a quadriplegic - and a highly esteemed teacher. June dueled cancer
three times - and pointedly told the author never to forget her.
Joel was a pubescent blowhard who became a helping hand to many
before battling health crises. Pat was a homecoming queen, became a
hospice nurse and overcame ambivalence about attending reunions
before taking on cancer. During teen years Chris seemed the most
self-assured but later revealed she had been "in a fog." DeeDee's
husband, an MS victim, urged her to put him in a nursing home to
ease her burden. She refused. This loveliest of widows kept on
living and loving - and at age 59 still could do cartwheels. Fran
proved unstoppable during a daunting journey from college mascot to
career success. Poh Hong put aside doubts by family and friends and
flew half way around the world to attend a reunion. John was a
college football player, became a minister, accepted strangers into
his prayer circle and dealt with his own heartaches. Then there was
Jim who persuaded the author to attend his first reunion - and
later showed remarkable mettle amid dire circumstances. Reunions
can be powerful. High school, college and graduate school class
reunions as well as one-on-one reconnections in distant locations
can whisper strong messages, teach lasting lessons, and tell us
much about the resilience of the human spirit.
Hitler's first conquests - Austria, the Sudeten region of
Czechoslovakia, the demilitarized Rhineland - were bloodless. His
first bloody strike east crushed Poland. To the west? On May 10,
1940, the Wehrmacht strikes The Netherlands which Hitler expects
will capitulate within a day or two. He is mistaken. Grebbe Line
defenders exhibit legendary Dutch stubbornness, Hitler's airborne
troops drop onto Rotterdam and The Hague - and meet fierce
opposition, and outnumbered and outgunned Dutch troops change -
unknowingly at the time - the course of WWII and world history. A
stout-hearted queen and a Carmelite priest stand up to Nazism, and
resistance fighters' cunning and courage prove lethal for some of
history's lesser-known bad guys. Two girls emigrate from Romanian
farms to Paris and then Amsterdam and make life-altering choices. A
young American employee of a global steamship company finds himself
swept into this maelstrom. This history-rich saga provides
perspectives little known to Americans.
World War II is a story told most often through the eyes of
national leaders, generals and, occasionally, infantrymen. Warrior
Priest underscores why that cauldron continues to stir imaginations
and curiosity by conveying the war's global impact in ways rarely
told. Here are woven together memorably the lives of a young priest
turned airborne chaplain, a Cracow student turned Polish lancer, an
aircraft carrier fireman, two young women partisans in Warsaw and a
French village, and a small town girl who follows a volunteer flyer
to England where she first treats the wounded in a London hospital
and then joins the U.S. Army nurse corps. Meticulously researched,
Warrior Priest's characters interact with real-life people in
historically authentic locales and situations and in an accurate
chronology from 1939 through 1946. From a quiet, small town in
1930s Ohio to a Vatican-run seminary. From a Polish lancer charging
German invaders to a U.S. airborne chaplain jumping into the night.
From a London hospital during the Blitz to a church basement in
battered Warsaw. From the harrowing streets of the ghetto to heroic
river crossings. down a church aisle. From invasion beaches to
evacuation hospital tents. From an occupied French village to the
Nazis' only death camp in France. Warrior Priest pulls the reader
into and through the cauldron of World War II by weaving together
the lives of everyday people in unforgettable ways.
LAPD's best Blade Runner and detective, Aahna 'Ash' Ashina, has
been assigned to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Isobel
and Cleo Selwyn, the wife and daughter of business tycoon,
Alexander Selwyn, a close personal friend of Eldon Tyrell. Ash's
search will take her on a journey from the crime-ridden underbelly
of Los Angeles to the promised land of the Off-World Colonies and
back home again as she uncovers a terrible secret and a desperate
conspiracy that forces her to confront her own hatred for
Replicants - the synthetic humans that she hunts with such
vengeance. Collects Blade Runner 2019: Los Angeles/Off-World/Home
Again, Home Again.
Shadows of War tells the story of World War II as few Americans
know it. In the mid-1930s a high school history teacher inspires a
student to look beyond his small hometown. He becomes a Foreign
Service officer, and they then anchor a World War II story that
provides perspectives little known to Americans. A Romanian
princess cares for more than 3,000 orphans and rescues more than
1,000 downed American flyers - and tussles with the SS to keep the
POWs from their control at considerable risk to herself. On air
raids over Romania, American crews must fly 1,200 miles - on
creatively named planes such as Wingo-Wango and Jersey Bounce - at
just 50 feet off the "deck" to launch attacks on the stoutly
defended oil refineries at Ploesti. In Singapore and Malaysia a
mild-mannered father of seven becomes a resistance leader after the
Japanese invasion, and four gutsy nuns who serve as nurses try to
stay a step ahead of the brutal conquerors.

1: REUNION Los Angeles, 2029. Aahna 'Ash' Ashina is back with the
LAPD BLADE RUNNER UNIT and determined to save as many Replicants as
she can. When Ash is confronted by an old adversary, one long
believed dead, she is drawn into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with a
Replicant unlike any she has ever faced before - a Replicant with
no fear of death and with a dream to finish off what the Blackout
started in 2022... BLADE RUNNER 2029 VOL 2: ECHOES Following the
REPLICANT uprising, Ash is now a prisoner of the Replicant YOTUN -
a genetically defective NEXUS 6 who has somehow managed to outlive
his four-year lifespan. With Yotun's guerrilla army of fanatical
Replicants now in control of the city, Ash must find a way of
escaping and stopping Yotun before he burns the city to the ground
and kills the woman she loves. BLADE RUNNER 2029 VOL 3: REDEMPTION
Yotun has started to succumb to the ravages of time, and even the
regular blood transfusions from his loyal supporters has started to
fail. As the city fights back to take control from the Replicant
rebel army, Yotun races to locate an old diary of ELDON TYRELL that
he believes holds the key to his final victory.
History comes alive in God's Perfect Scar. A survivor of the 1944
Warsaw Uprising finds himself in Auschwitz, working with a woman
prisoner to plan and implement a harrowing mass escape. A former
Polish lancer turned airborne trooper turned English instructor at
the University of Warsaw finds himself targeted by the
Kremlin-controlled secret police. Two brothers find themselves
conscripted by a pair of ambitious rulers, each itching to fire the
first shot in a war that will ensnare soldiers and nurses from
America, Britain, New Zealand and Korea. An American priest, a
former World War II chaplain, finds himself playing street soccer
in Rome and plotting a rescue in Warsaw. Bullets and shrapnel leave
lasting scars - as do polio, treachery and guilt. Painstakingly
researched, God's Perfect Scar is the story of ordinary people
swept up in extraordinary, history-changing upheavals, contending
with unrelenting stresses and making life-altering choices. During
his research, Johnson learned about Aline Gartner, lost in the
mists of time and history. In the pages of God's Perfect Scar, he
"brings back to life" this remarkably courageous woman. From
Auschwitz to Cracow to Warsaw, London, Moscow, Beijing, Kaesong,
Seoul and small town America, God's Perfect Scar takes readers on a
journey that provides a different and broader perspective on major
happenings that have been shaping history for the last 60 years. As
with Johnson's earlier works, Warrior Priest and Fate of the
Warriors, the pacing in God's Perfect Scar is brisk, the tension
palpable and the outcomes unpredictable.
This officially sanctioned graphic novel set in the world of the
cult 1982 science fiction movie Blade Runner, directed by Ridley
Scott. Written by the New York Times Bestselling author Mike
Johnson, writer of Star Trek, Supergirl, Transformers and Green
Lantern. The second arc of Ash’s final adventure sees the retired
Blade Runner reunited with Cleo Selwyn, her ward from the first
Blade Runner graphic novel 2019. Together they must go on the run
from the deadly and fanatical LUV, the first Replicant Blade Runner
seen in the movie Blade Runner 2049. It’s 2039 and Cleo Selwyn
has finally returned to Los Angles to search for her surrogate
Replicant mother Isobel who Cleo believes has been abducted on the
orders of Niander Wallace. Believing that that Cleo’s DNA holds
the secret of Replicant fertility Wallace has ordered his own
personal assistant Repicant, Luv, the world’s first Replicant
Blade Runner to hunt down and return Cleo to him and to kill all
who stand in her way. Reuniting with former Blade Runner Aahna
‘Ash’ Ashina, Cleo and Ash set off on a road trip to find her
mother with Luv hard on their heels. Featuring artwork from both
Andres Guinaldo and colourist Marc Lesko, who have both been
illustrating the saga of Ash since her first outing back in Blade
Runner 2019.
From the people who work exclusively from home to the 'portable'
manager with no fixed site, the need to communicate is paramount.
Mike Johnson's candid appraisal of teleworking, or telecommuting as
it is also known, looks at the key benefits: for the individual it
provides the opportunity to work from home; for the company it
provides major savings on costs. The down side is the lack of human
contact and the anxiety of employees who work away from the centre
of things. The ...in brief books provide a critical 'snapshot' of
the major management fashions and fads influencing business
strategy. They cut through the consultants' jargon and steer a
practical, common sense course through the theory and hype. They
provide managers with a balanced view based on evidence rather than
missionary zeal, so that they can be better informed.
Los Angeles 2039. It has been three years since Niander Wallace
introduced his brand of ‘perfectly obedient’ Replicants, and
the ban on synthetic humans has been lifted, at least for the new
Wallace models―the older Tyrell Corp’s Nexus 8 units are still
hunted by Blade Runners. Cleo Selwyn, first seen as a small child
in Blade Runner 2019, has returned to L.A. some twenty years later,
searching for Isobel, a Replicant copy of her real mother who died
when she was three. Cleo believes that Niander Wallace is holding
Isobel captive, and the only person she can call on for help is the
one who saved her so many years ago: Aahna ‘Ash’ Ashina, now an
aging and disgraced ex-Blade Runner.
An exciting new graphic novel! Welcome to the world of Blade Runner
2009 and the birth of the BLADE RUNNER DIVISION. The slums of LA
are ablaze. Tyrell executive Ilora Stahl, head of a secret
programme to transfer human consciousness into Replicant hosts has
launched an all-out attack on Sector 6-b determined to flush out
and kill a renegade Replicant called Nia, who was once part of her
covert programme. Having escaped, Nia has been triggering logic
short-circuits in the organic programming of once loyal Replicant
servants, causing them to rebel against their human masters. Now as
Ilora's security force of Replicants attack the city, ex-LAPD
detective CAL MOREAUX has teamed up with an escaped experimental
REPLICANT called Asa, who has been uploaded with the consciousness
of a dead Tyrell scientist. Together they must expose Ilora's
conspiracy before the city burns to the ground. Writers K. Perkins
& Mellow Brown, and artists Fernando Dagnino and Marco Lesko
have brought a powerful new dynamic to the future noir world of
Blade Runner as they explore themes of gender identity, human
exploitation and slavery set against the backdrop of world on the
brink of ecological collapse and rampant unchecked genetic
manipulation.
Follow the adventures of ex-LAPD detective CAL MOREAUX as he
investigates a seemingly straight-forward suicide of a TYRELL CORP
scientist and uncovers a desperate conspiracy that could see the
city of LA burned to the ground. This boxed set edition collects
all three volumes of the Blade Runner ORIGINS.
