Many Freemasons have made the world a better place, while some have
been villainous criminals. Members of the Craft have developed
forensic science, solved famous crimes and invented all manner of
things. Several members of the Royal Family have also been members.
Masons have been very active in the criminal justice system, both
as 'goodies' and 'baddies': it was a mason who formed the Special
Branch to fight terrorism and another who brought the Moors Murders
to an end. In some cases, such as the Cleveland Street Scandal,
masons found themselves on both sides of the law. The medical
profession is also well represented in lodges. Happily, it was a
member of the Craft who rescued the Elephant Man, while another
masonic doctor was the first to identify an occupational cancer. On
the other side of the coin, there have been several evil masonic
doctors who committed murder, and one masonic surgeon may have
committed regicide, although his motives were merciful. This tells
the stories of weird and wonderful masons too - celebrities, film
makers, soldiers, explorers, world-famous businessmen, politicians,
forgers and scoundrels. There are masons of every character, and
all are covered in this book.
Who were Tubalcain, Aholiab and Zabud and what is their
significance for the Freemason? There is a general interest in the
rituals of Freemasonry, generated in part by the apparently obscure
references they contain. This is the only book that offers a guide
to the stories used in Masonic ritual and their links to the Bible
and Christianity. The new Mason is directed to a 'serious
contemplation of the Volume of the Sacred Law' - but that is easier
said than done without a grounding in the Scriptures, something
that fewer and fewer people have. The historical and geographical
setting of the Bible is explained here, making such contemplation
easier for Mason and non-Mason alike. Mike Neville has
systematically cross-referenced the most influential Chapters of
the Bible to the ceremonies. It is his intention to get Freemasons
to understand the ritual - not just to memorise and regurgitate -
as well as to elucidate for the non-Mason. Sacred Secrets will aid
the clergy, theologians and any other person interested in
Freemasonry to see the links between ritual and scripture.
Tim McCartney's and Mike Neville's little book U-Turn is a readable
and fascinating excursion through the often successful attempts of
two professionals to engage with the deep social and psychological
problems of a small state - the seven hundred island archipelago of
the Bahamas. Starting appropriately with their own very different
backgrounds (McCartney is Bahamian while Neville is Irish and
trained in the UK), the book traces the history of how they came
together and worked to combat problems of drug addiction, stress
and mental disease, developing along the way their own unique
programs based on individual as well as large group interaction.
U-Turn provides searing insights into the mental health problems
faced by small states, but goes far beyond that, to suggest
workable solutions for the managing of mental health problems in
any jurisdiction in the twenty-first century. -Brian Meeks,
