Albrow, Beck, Friedman, Hannerz, Robertson und einige mehr zahlten zu dem (Pflicht-)Lektureprogramm, das auf der einen Seite, wenn es um den neuen, seit 1989 zunehmend entfesselten globalen Kapitalismus ging, gewohnt apokalyptisch, auf der anderen, die Kultur beleuchtende Seite hingegen bis zu einem bestimmten Punkt uberraschend positiv, daruber hinaus jedoch und gerade im Vergleich zu den dusteren okonomischen und politischen Prophezeiungen enttauschend blutleer daherkam. Positiv, weil sich alle Autoren daruber einig zu sein schienen, dass von einer westlich dominierten kulturellen Homogenisierung keineswegs die Rede sein konne; vielmehr entstunde eine, in gewissem Sinne neuartige Vielfalt an kulturellen Identifizierungs-Spielarten. Enttauschend, weil neben diesem, eigentlich nicht wirklich neuen Aspekt der spat- oder postmodernen lebensweltlichen Orientierung(slosigkeit), die dazugehorigen (trans-)kulturellen Praxen sowie deren Produkte noch wenig erforscht zu sein schienen... Letztlich und vielleicht auch konsequenterweise machte sich die Erkenntnis breit, dass es im Zusammenhang mit der Globalisierung eine Art Goldgrube (noch?) nicht geben kann; zu vielfaltig und vor allem zwiespaltig sind die teils zu beobachtenden, grossenteils jedoch bisher nur zu vermutenden Tendenzen dieses "process of change known as globalisation " (Hall 1996: 277). Jahrhunderts haben sich fur die menschliche Interaktion in den Metropolen Bezeichnungen wie distanziert, gleichgultig, kalt oder reserviert in der kollektiven Empfindung eingenistet. Die Schuld hierfur wurde und wird in der Regel den Auswuchsen des fortgeschrittenen Kapitalismus und der Geldwirtschaft, der Okonomisierung und Verdinglichung unserer Lebenswelt zugeschrieben. Der amerikanische Soziologe Richard Sennett jedoch bietet hierfur einige daruber hinausgehende Erklarungen an. In seinen Werken zum Thema Stadt erweitert er die Ursachenforschung um die Aspekte der sich mit der Urbanisierung verandernden stadtischen Architektur sowie der gesellschaftlichen Ansichten und deren entsprechenden Ausdrucks- und Umgangsformen wahrend der letzten drei Jahrhunderte. In seinem 1977 erschienen Buch 'Verfall und Ende des offentlichen Lebens. Die Tyrannei der Intimitat' stellt er zum Beispiel die recht ungewohliche These auf, unserer Gesellschaft wurde es eher an Distanz als an Nahe mangeln, sie sei gepragt von einer intimen Sichtweise." Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf der Ergrundung der zunehmenden Trennung zwischen privatem und offentlichem Leben seit dem 18. Jahrhundert und ihren Auswuchsen bis in die Gegenwart. 'Civitas.
