As a way to comment on a person's style or taste, the word "tacky"
has distinctly southern origins, with its roots tracing back to the
so-called "tackies" who tacked horses on South Carolina farms prior
to the Civil War. The Tacky South presents eighteen fun, insightful
essays that examine connections between tackiness and the American
South, ranging from nineteenth-century local color fiction and the
television series Murder, She Wrote to red velvet cake and the
ubiquitous influence of Dolly Parton. Charting the gender, race,
and class constructions at work in regional aesthetics, The Tacky
South explores what shifting notions of tackiness reveal about US
culture as a whole and the role that region plays in addressing
national and global issues of culture and identity.
The 16th Edition of ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE is "inspiring people to
care about the planet." Partnering with National Geographic
Learning, the authors Tyler Miller and Scott Spoolman deliver a
text that equips and inspires you with the tools and knowledge to
make a difference solving today's environmental issues. Exclusive
content highlights important work of National Geographic explorers
and grantees and features vivid photos, maps and illustrations that
bring course concepts to life. Using sustainability as their
central theme, the authors emphasize natural capital, natural
capital degradation, solutions, trade-offs and the importance of
individuals. In return, you learn how nature works, how you
interact with it and how humanity can continue to sustain its
relationship with the earth by applying nature's lessons to
economies and individual lifestyles.
"The use of computational, especially agent-based, models has
already shown its value in illuminating the study of economic and
other social processes. Miller and Page have written an orientation
to this field that is a model of motivation and insight, making
clear the underlying thinking and illustrating it by varied and
thoughtful examples. It conveys with remarkable clarity the
essentials of the complex systems approach to the embarking
researcher."--Kenneth J. Arrow, winner of the Nobel Prize in
economics
"In "Complex Adaptive Systems," two masters of this burgeoning
field provide a highly readable and novel restatement of the logic
of social interactions, linking individually based micro processes
to macrosocial outcomes, ranging from Adam Smith's invisible hand
to Thomas Schelling's models of standing ovations. The book
combines the vision of a new Santa Fe school of computational,
social, and behavioral science with essential 'how to' advice for
apprentice modelers."--Samuel Bowles, author of "Microeconomics:
Behavior, Institutions, Evolution"
"This is a wonderful book that will be read by graduate
students, faculty, and policymakers. The authors write in an
extraordinarily clear manner about topics that are very technical
and difficult for many people. I sat down to begin thumbing through
and found myself deeply engaged."--Elinor Ostrom, author of
"Understanding Institutional Diversity"
SUSTAINING THE EARTH provides the basic scientific tools for
understanding and thinking critically about the environmental
problems we face. About half the price of other environmental
science texts, this 14-chapter, one-color core book offers an
integrated approach that emphasizes how environmental and resource
problems and solutions are related. The new edition of SUSTAINING
THE EARTH is fully updated with the latest statistics and reports
of important scientific studies. New Connections boxes show
surprising but important connections between environmental problems
and aspects of daily life. In addition, new Thinking About boxes
help students apply the concepts of the book to their own lives.
Sustainability is the integrating theme of this current and
thought-provoking book. The concept-centered approach transforms
complex environmental topics and issues into key concepts that
students will understand and remember. By framing the concepts with
goals for more sustainable lifestyles and human communities,
students see how promising the future can be.

Charlie Miller was the best young Scottish footballer of his
generation. He made his Rangers debut under Walter Smith aged just
seventeen and became a vital part of the lbrox club's legendary
nine-in-a-row squad. Miller won four league titles, two Scottish
Cups and one League Cup with Rangers, as well as being named the
Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year in 1995. Yet many believe he
was a wasted talent. Here, Miller reveals how he's spent his entire
life not knowing who his father is and relives his colourful
upbringing in Castlemilk - one of Glasgow's toughest housing
estates. He explains how the gang culture he was involved in almost
ended his Rangers career before it had started and speaks openly
about the impact drugs, alcohol and gambling has had on his life.
Miller takes you inside the lbrox dressing-room, where he mixed
with iconic figures like Ally McCoist, Brian Laudrup and Paul
Gascoigne and explains how he went from Rangers hero to rock
bottom.
