Part of the "Studies in Biology, Economy and Society" series, this book looks at Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911), a grandson of Erasmus Darwin. In his twenties he won fame as an explorer, writing "The Art of Travel", and was on the council of the Geographical Society for many years. He worked at the prediction of weather, and described his discovery of the anticyclone to the Royal Society in 1862 and in "Meteorographica" (1863). He first became an anthropologist in 1862 when he joined the Ethnological Society, which emerged to become the Anthropological Institute in 1871 - Galton was president from 1885 to 1889. He initiated anthropometry and the measurement of human variation, and the use of photography for the analysis of differences, or individual characteristics, in a group. He recognized the uniqueness of "Finger Prints" (1893), and, in 1875, first used the records of pairs of identical twins in his research into the laws of heredity. It was on the publication of the "Origin of the Species" by his cousin Charles that he realized the importance of inheritance and the transmission of characters of body and brain from parent to child. Catalogue and iconography of the extraordinary wealth of images of Sir Isaac Newton, both before and after his death. Sir Isaac Newton [1642-1727] is rare among figures of the past for the number of authentic paintings, engravings and images of him which survive. He was painted by some nine different artists in the latter part of his life, and after his death both portraits and sculptures continued to proliferate, the amazing demand for representations of his image demonstrating his immense fame. This iconography, lavishly illustrated in both colour and black and white, and involving the disciplines of History of Art and History of Science, catalogues 231 icons in two sections, and is thus an invaluable guide to the images. Part I contains 122 portraits and Part II 109 sculptures, about fifty of which were produced before his death, the rest from then until 1800.

In 1901 William Bateson, Professor of Biology at Cambridge, published a renewed version of a lecture which he had delivered the year before to the Royal Horticultural Society in London (reprinted in the book as an appendix). In this lecture he recognized the importance of the work completed by Gregor Mendel in 1865, and brought it to the notice of the scientific world. Upon reading Bateson's paper, Archibald Garrod realized the relevance of Mendel's laws to human disease and in 1902 introduced Mendelism to medical genetics. The first part of A Century of Mendelism in Human Genetics takes a historical perspective of the first 50 years of Mendelism, including the bitter argument between the Mendelians and the biometricians. The second part discusses human genetics since 1950, ending with a final chapter examining genetics and the future of medicine. The book considers the genetics of both single-gene and complex diseases, human cancer genetics, genetic linkage, and natural selection in human populations. Besides being of general medical significance, this book will be of particular interest to departments of genetics and of medical genetics, as well as to historians of science and medicine.
The twenty-eight essays in this fascinating and important collection may be divided into three groups: the first is concerned with Keynes's early life and his relations with 'Bloomsbury' and Cambridge, the second with his major contributions to economics and to British and world affairs (written for the general reader as well as for economists), and the third deals with various aspects of his life and work which reveal the immense range of his intellectual and other interests.
