Highlighting a critical range of topics such as system stability, system stabilization, and fuzzy rules, this book is an ideal publication for engineers, researchers, academics, graduate students, and practitioners interested in the design of large-scale interconnected systems.

Biological Nitrogen Fixation, Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment - Proceedings of the 14th International Nitrogen... Biological Nitrogen Fixation, Sustainable Agriculture and the Environment - Proceedings of the 14th International Nitrogen Fixation Congress (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Yi-ping Wang, Min Lin, Zhe-xian Tian, Claudine Elmerich, William E Newton
R5,700 Discovery Miles 57 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 14th International Nitrogen Fixation Congress was held in Beijing, China from October 27th through November 1st, 2004. This volume constitutes the proceedings of the Congress and represents a compilation of the presentations by scientists from more than 30 countries around the World who came to Beijing to discuss the progress made since the last Congress and to exchange ideas and information. This year marked the 30th anniversary of the first Congress held in Pullman, Washington, USA, in 1974. Since then, this series of Congresses has met five times in North America (three in the United States and once each in Canada and Mexico), once in South America (Brazil), four times in Western Europe (once each in Spain, The Netherlands, Germany and France), once in Eastern Europe (Russia), and once in Australia; and now for the first time in Asia. China was a most appropriate choice because China is a big country with the largest population in the World, about 1. 3 billion people, which is about 22% of the World's population. It is traditionally an agricultural country, even though China has only 7% of the available farming land. This situation explains why agriculture and its productivity are major issues for the Chinese people, its government and the scientists in the field.

Certainty as a Social Metaphor - The Social and Historical Production of Certainty in China and the West (Hardcover): Min Lin Certainty as a Social Metaphor - The Social and Historical Production of Certainty in China and the West (Hardcover)
Min Lin
R2,703 Discovery Miles 27 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume combines philosophy, the social theory of knowledge, and historical analysis to present a comprehensive study of the idea of certainty as defined in the Western and Chinese intellectual traditions. Philosophical ideas such as certainty are the products of deeply layered socio-historical constructions. The author shows how the highly abstract idea of certainty in philosophical discourse is connected to the concrete social process from which the meaning of certainty is derived. Three different versions of certainty--in modern Western thought, in German Idealism, and in traditional Chinese philosophy--are examined in the context of a historical-comparative study of Western and Chinese social processes.

Three versions of the idea of certainty are represented by the three distinct philosophical discourse and societies explored in this book. However, the pursuit of certainty transcends culture as a fundamental aspect of philosophical thought. This in-depth study shows how the social genesis and function in philosophy of the specific meaning of certainty has been delineated through a process of complex idealogical negotiation by dominant social groups--the bourgeoisie in modern Western Europe, the nobility and state bureaucrats in 18th- and 19th-century Germany, and the landed gentry in traditional China. The author concludes by suggesting new avenues for study inspired by his research.

Statistical and Computational Pharmacogenomics presents recent developments in statistical methodology with a number of detailed worked examples that outline how these methods can be applied. This comprehensive volume provides key tools needed to understand and model the genetic variation for drug response and equips statisticians with a thorough understanding of this complex field and how computational skills can be employed.

Dexter the Very Good Goat (Hardcover): Jia Min Lin Dexter the Very Good Goat (Hardcover)
Jia Min Lin; Jean Malone-Ward
R458 R356 Discovery Miles 3 560 Save R102 (22%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dexter is the top goat at the petting zoo, but he's not the bravest, much to his embarrassment. He has the longest, smoothest, and straightest horns of all eleven goats, and he's very good at using them to keep the others in line. He's also a very good boy. Dexter never grabs the paper maps out of visitors' hands or sneaks into the alpaca pen for an afternoon grain snack. But he's secretly afraid of some things, like the generator, the big green ball, and--horror of horrors--having his hooves trimmed. Follow the zoo-yard adventures of this irascible goat and find what goes on inside his head as he learns to overcome his fears.

The Correspondence of G. E. Morrison 1895-12 (Paperback): Hui-Min Lin The Correspondence of G. E. Morrison 1895-12 (Paperback)

Between Politics and Markets - Firms, Competition, and Institutional Change in Post-Mao China (Paperback): Yi-Min Lin Between Politics and Markets - Firms, Competition, and Institutional Change in Post-Mao China (Paperback)
Yi-Min Lin
R943 Discovery Miles 9 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Between Politics and Markets examines how the decline of central planning was related to the rise of two markets: an economic market for the exchange of products and factors, and a political market for the diversion to private interests of state assets and authorities. Lin reveals their concurrent development through an account of how industrial firms competed their way out of the plan through exchange relations with one another and with state agents. He argues that the two markets were mutually accommodating, that the political market grew also from a decay of the state's self-monitoring capacity, and that economic actors' competition for special favors from state agents constituted a major driving force of economic institutional change. The findings presented in the book illustrate that concrete markets for products and factors need not mimic 'the invisible hand', nor is there a linear correlation between their expansion and the rise of a legal-rational state.

Dancing with the Devil - The Political Economy of Privatization in China (Hardcover): Yi-Min Lin Dancing with the Devil - The Political Economy of Privatization in China (Hardcover)
Yi-Min Lin
R3,269 Discovery Miles 32 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From 1978 through the turn of the century, China was transformed from a state-owned economy into a predominantly private economy. This fundamental change took place under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which is ideologically mandated and politically predisposed to suppress private ownership. In Dancing with the Devil, Yi-min Lin explains how and why such an ironic and puzzling reality came about. The central thesis is that private ownership became a necessary evil for the CCP because the public sector was increasingly unable to address two essential concerns for regime survival: employment and revenue. Focusing on political actors as a major group of change agents, the book examines how their self-interested behavior led to the decline of public ownership. Demographics and the state's fiscal system provide the analytical coordinates for revealing the changing incentives and constraints faced by political actors and for investigating their responses and strategies. These factors help explain CCP leaders' initial decision to allow limited private economic activities at the outset of reform. They also shed light on the subsequent growth of opportunism in the behavior of lower level officials, which undermined the vitality of public enterprises. Furthermore, they hold a key to understanding the timing of the massive privatization in the late 1990s, as well as its tempo and spread thereafter. Dancing with the Devil illustrates how the driving forces developed and played out in these intertwined episodes of the story. In so doing, it offers new insights into the mechanisms of China's economic transformation and enriches theories of institutional change.
