Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

1902. The author is not a spiritualist and frankly confesses that
he is strongly inclined to hold the belief in continued personal
existence as capable proof and in the possibility of at least
occasional communication, but he holds that the scientific method
is the only method of knowledge. It is his present purpose to point
out simply and plainly certain facts, and certain conclusions based
on those facts, which he came to accept after years of patient
study, both as a member of the Society for Psychical Research and
in his own personal capacity.
1883. At the time this book was written, we had just been
celebrating the 400th anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther.
The one thing with which his name is more prominently associated
than with anything else is - for the Protestant world - the
dethronement of the Pope as God's vicegerent on earth, and the
establishment of the Bible in his place. Contents: English bible;
text and the canon; Pentateuch; Prophets; writings; bridge between
the testaments; Epistles; Gospels; religion of the bible; morality
of the bible; present use and worth of the bible; eternal bible.
1888. The author ventures to believe that, both as to method and
result, he has something to offer that is not merely an echo of
what has already been said. The following eight chapters are only
eight Sunday morning discourses, delivered in the regular order of
the author's work, to which is added an address on the intellectual
basis of faith by W.H. Savage. Contents: Origin and development of
the idea of God; does God exist: can we know God? Is God conscious,
personal and good? Why does not God reveal Himself? shall we
worship God? shall we pray to God? the glory and the shame of
atheism.
