The book offers a range of case studies on fourteen Western democracies, highlighting the bio-ethical and political debates over human stem cell research, therapeutic and reproductive cloning, and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. Despite the broadly assumed institutional separation of church and state in contemporary Western politics, there is a trend towards renewed alliances between illiberal interpretations of religion and right-wing populist politics that challenge liberal democracy. This book explores the theoretically and empirically complex ideological, structural, and historical linkage between religion and illiberal politics within a broad range of European states. It shows how political actors apply Christian identity narratives to push exclusionist anti-Muslim politics, while simultaneously showcasing the ways in which religious actors evolve as illiberal players searching for political allies. Wie koennen die sozialen Sicherungssysteme, vor allem im Bereich der Alterssicherung und Gesundheitsleistungen demografiefest und generationengerecht gestaltet werden? Wie koennen Innovationskraft, Wettbewer- fahigkeit und Arbeitsproduktivitat erhalten und weiter gesteigert werden? Welche Anpassungserfordernisse ergeben sich auf Unternehmensebene, in der Infrastruktur und in den Regionen und wie koennen sie bestmoeglich wirtschaftspolitisch begleitet werden? Zur Prasentation und Diskussion neuerer Forschungsergebnisse zu wirtschaftspolitisch relevanten Aspekten des demografischen Wandels hatten der Arbeitskreis "Junge Demographie" der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Demographie und das Bundesministerium fur Wirtschaft und Technologie zu einem zweitatigen Symposium "Wirtschaftspolitische Herausforderungen des demografischen Wandels" eingeladen. Das Symposium fand am 26. und 27. Februar 2009 im Bundesministerium fur Wirtschaft und Technologie in Berlin statt. Teilnehmer der Veranstaltung waren Vertreter aus Wirtschaft und Verbanden, Wissenschaftler verschiedener Fachrichtungen, Vertreter von Bund, Landern und Kommunen sowie Fachjournalisten. Das Symposium diente der wirtschaftspolitischen Beratung und zielte darauf ab, neueste Erkenntnisse der wissenschaftlichen Forschung zu den langfristigen wirtschaftlichen Auswirkungen des demografischen Wandels in Deutschland und Europa zu prasentieren, wirtschaftspolitische Fragestellungen aufzuwerfen und Loesungsansatze zu diskutieren.
