Communities of Computing is the first book-length history of the
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), founded in 1947 and with
a membership today of 100,000 worldwide. It profiles ACM's notable
SIGs, active chapters, and individual members, setting ACM's
history into a rich social and political context. The book's 12
core chapters are organized into three thematic sections. "Defining
the Discipline" examines the 1960s and 1970s when the field of
computer science was taking form at the National Science
Foundation, Stanford University, and through ACM's notable efforts
in education and curriculum standards. "Broadening the Profession"
looks outward into the wider society as ACM engaged with social and
political issues - and as members struggled with balancing a focus
on scientific issues and awareness of the wider world. Chapters
examine the social turbulence surrounding the Vietnam War, debates
about the women's movement, efforts for computing and community
education, and international issues including professionalization
and the Cold War. "Expanding Research Frontiers" profiles three
areas of research activity where ACM members and ACM itself shaped
notable advances in computing, including computer graphics,
computer security, and hypertext. Featuring insightful profiles of
notable ACM leaders, such as Edmund Berkeley, George Forsythe, Jean
Sammet, Peter Denning, and Kelly Gotlieb, and honest assessments of
controversial episodes, the volume deals with compelling and
complex issues involving ACM and computing. It is not a narrow
organizational history of ACM committees and SIGS, although much
information about them is given. All chapters are original works of
research. Many chapters draw on archival records of ACM's
headquarters, ACM SIGs, and ACM leaders. This volume makes a
permanent contribution to documenting the history of ACM and
understanding its central role in the history of computing.
"I was fortunate in having an instructor at the University of
Minnesota who was looking after me," recalled one electrical
engineering graduate of 1949. "When I said, 'What's next?' he said,
'If I were you, I'd just go down the street here to Engineering
Research Associates, and I'd think you'd like what they're doing
there'." That was Seymour Cray, and his computer designs helped
create a notable computer industry in the Twin Cities. Another
Minnesota graduate, Earl Bakken (class of 1948), founded Medtronic
and the core of a nationally renowned medical devices industry. For
75 years the Institute of Technology, now the College of Science
and Engineering, has pioneered in research, innovation, and
technology transfer to Minnesota and the world. The people behind
this unique institution are revealed in this concise illustrated
history, prepared by its own team of professional historians.
Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given
area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject
in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of
travel. They are relevant but also visionary. Since the turn of the
millennium, significant social, economic, political and
technological transformations have brought policy issues to
prominence in East Asian societies. This topical Research Agenda
finds East Asian social policy at a critical juncture. It analyses
the driving forces that are shifting contemporary research and
diverse policy responses in the region. Providing a comprehensive
overview of the critical socio-economic changes and events over the
last two decades, the volume identifies both converging and
diverging social policy developments and reforms across East Asian
societies. Chapters explore the influences of globalisation,
post-industrialisation, labour market transformations, demographic
changes, and cultural shifts on social policy in East Asia. Taking
regional, international and comparative approaches to social policy
analysis, the volume also questions the sustainability,
vulnerability and equity of current East Asian social policy and
welfare systems. Contributing new empirical knowledge to the
theorisation of social policy and practice in East Asia in the
post-crisis landscape, this volume will be invaluable to students
and scholars of social policy, sociology, and politics.
Highlighting areas for urgent policy initiatives, it will also
prove vital to policymakers and practitioners in the field.
Housing, Care and Inheritance draws on the author's long-standing
research into housing issues surrounding the ageing society, a
phenomenon which is now a concern in many mature economies. If an
adult child provides care for their elderly parent, should that
person be rewarded? If so, should they inherit their parent's house
or a larger share of the assets? The 'generational contract' is
often influenced by cultural norms, family traditions, social
policy and housing market, so it is negotiated differently in
different societies and at different times. Such generational
contract is however breaking down as a result of socio-economic and
demographic changes. Drawn from the two-part study funded by the UK
Economic & Social Research Council, Misa Izuhara explores the
myth and the changing patterns of the particular exchange of
long-term care and housing assets between older parents and their
adult children in Britain and Japan. Highly international and
comparative in perspectives, this study addresses important
sociological as well as policy questions regarding
intergenerational relations involving housing wealth, long-term
care, and inheritance.
Now updated - A comprehensive, 500-year history of technology in
society. Historian Thomas J. Misa's sweeping history of the
relationship between technology and society over the past 500 years
reveals how technological innovations have shaped-and have been
shaped by-the cultures in which they arose. Spanning the
preindustrial past, the age of scientific, political, and
industrial revolutions, as well as the more recent eras of
imperialism, modernism, and global security, this compelling work
evaluates what Misa calls "the question of technology." In this
edition, Misa brings his acclaimed text up to date by drawing on
current scholarship while retaining sharply drawn portraits of
individual people, artifacts, and systems. Each chapter has been
honed to relate to contemporary concerns. Globalization, Misa
argues, looks differently considering today's virulent nationalism,
cultural chauvinism, and trade wars. A new chapter focuses on the
digital age from 1990 to 2016. The book also examines how today's
unsustainable energy systems, insecure information networks, and
vulnerable global shipping have helped foster geopolitical risks
and instability and takes a look at the coronavirus pandemic from
the perspective of Wuhan, China's high-tech district. A masterful
analysis of how technology and culture have influenced each other
over five centuries, Leonardo to the Internet frames a history that
illuminates modern-day problems and prospects faced by our
technology-dependent world.

This book presents a unique behind-the-scenes view into the Control
Data Corporation during its ascent into the top rank of the
computer industry. This detailed 15-part oral history starts with
Robert M. Price's work programming the first generation of
computers in California. In 1961, he joined Control Data. For the
next 29 years, Price was in key positions -- culminating as

grew from a Minneapolis start-up into a multi-billion-dollar global
company. Lively anecdotes provide an in-depth assessment of Control
Data's founder William C. Norris and his inimitable style. Of
special note are Price's incisive observations about corporate
social responsibility and the "lessons learned" from a remarkable
