A captivating photographic odyssey spanning fashion, Hollywood and
travel, this is the first publication in almost 40 years on the
work of George Hoyningen-Huene, the photographer whose images
defined an era. Baron George Hoyningen-Huene (1900–1968), known
simply as Huene, worked during the golden age of couture fashion
and Hollywood cinema. He was born in St Petersburg to a wealthy
family, but they had to flee their home during the Russian
revolution in 1917. Huene spent time in England before moving to
Paris, where he was employed to create photographs for Vogue and
Vanity Fair and rapidly established himself as a visual innovator,
fusing elements of neoclassicism and surrealism to create chic,
arresting images. In 1935, Huene joined Harper’s Bazaar magazine,
where he remained a contributor until 1946, following which he
settled in California and embarked on a second career as a colour
coordinator for Hollywood films. Supported by an international
exhibition opening at Chanel Nexus Hall in Tokyo, this book
combines elegant design and production values with rigorous new
research and scholarship. Organized into eight chapters, each
supported by texts by contributing writers from the worlds of
fashion, cinema and photography, and featuring names and faces that
have defined our view of style, glamour and grace in the 20th
century, it reminds us of Huene’s position among the greats of
photography.
Named to the 2022 Architectural Digest AD100 list Named to the 2022
Elle Decor A-List Over the past forty years, Thomas Kligerman has
been immersed in the history of residential architecture, weaving
together sources from English and European traditions with the
American vernacular, particularly the puebloan style of the
Southwest and the shingle style that has prevailed along the East
Coast since the late nineteenth century. A staple on the AD100
list, Kligerman has woven together these strands of domestic
architecture to create his own American aesthetic. Shingle and
Stone: Thomas Kligerman Houses is a full-career monograph that
features a selection of inspiring residences that highlight the
evolution of his architectural thinking. Shingle and Stone presents
thirteen major highlights from Kligerman’s portfolio, including
three projects currently in design. The featured projects are all
set in extraordinarily beautiful natural landscapes, from the
coasts of Martha’s Vineyard and the Hamptons, to the forests of
South Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains and the Pacific Northwest,
showcasing the depth and breadth of the architect’s oeuvre.
Illustrated with more than 200 spectacular photographs of interiors
and exteriors alongside plans, renderings, and sketches that reveal
the design process, this new book will immerse readers in the
powerfully nuanced language of Kligerman’s architectural vision.
In the architect’s own words, exceptional architecture combines
existing styles in order to “move the needle forward,” and this
new monograph presents luxurious single-family homes that do
exactly that. Written in collaboration with the celebrated design
editor Mitchell Owens, Shingle and Stone is an inspirational
architectural collection that presents the contemporary traditional
design for which Kligerman is known. Beautifully packaged with a
vellum jacket over a linen case silkscreened with one of
Kligerman’s own hand-drawn sketches, this is the ideal book for
both architects and design enthusiasts, and is sure to sit
beautifully on any bookshelf, desk, or coffee table.
For readers who enjoyed Mario Buatta, Tom Britt's monograph
documents the fifty-year career of one of America's greatest
designers. Britt's interiors reflect a cleanly tailored and
brightly hued modernity, with all the embellishments of refined and
luxurious decoration. A must-have addition to Rizzoli's list of
books on the modern masters of interior design. Fabulous: The
Dazzling Interiors of Tom Britt is a sweeping survey of (and the
first book about) the AD100 interior designer's grand way with
decoration. Color palettes are bold, style contrasts are high
energy, even the smallest room is packed with swagger and panache,
and multicultural allusions abound.
