This work is concerned with combinatorial aspects arising in the theory of exactly solvable models and representation theory. Recent developments in integrable models reveal an unexpected link between representation theory and statistical mechanics through combinatorics. For example, Young tableaux, which describe the basis of irreducible representations, appear in the Bethe Ansatz method in quantum spin chains as labels for the eigenstates for Hamiltonians. Taking into account the various criss-crossing among mathematical subject, Physical Combinatorics presents new results and exciting ideas from three viewpoints; representation theory, integrable models, and combinatorics. This volume will be of interest to mathematical physicists and graduate students in the the above-mentioned fields. Contributors to the volume: T.H. Baker, O. Foda, G. Hatayama, Y. Komori, A. Kuniba, T. Nakanishi, M. Okado, A. Schilling, J. Suzuki, T. Takagi, D. Uglov, O. Warnaar, T.A. Welsh, A. Zabrodin

The great successes of the Japanese economy have often been attributed to differences in the Japanese economic system. Employing an exhaustive investigation of the roles of the government and banks, firms and networks, and workers and managers, Yoshiro Miwa illustrates that the standard principles of economics explain the dominant patterns of Japanese economic phenomena. Debunking many long-held myths, Miwa deftly propels readers to a fuller, more accurate understanding of the Japanese economy.
Developments in mathematical physics during the second half of the 20th century influenced a number of mathematical areas, among the more significant being representation theory, differential equations, combinatorics, and algebraic geometry. In all of them, the dynamic role of integrable models has been central, largely due to two essential properties: the fact that integrable models possess infinite degrees of freedom and infinite dimensional symmetries. This volume focuses on the ongoing importance of integrability in covering the following topics: conformal field theory, massive quantum field theory, solvable lattice models, quantum affine algebras, the Painleve equations and combinatorics. The Learning Sciences in Conversation explores the unique pluralities, complex networks, and distinct approaches of the learning scientists of today. Focused on four key scholarly areas - transdisciplinarity, design, cognition, and technology - this cutting-edge volume draws on empirical and theoretical foundations to illustrate the directions, perspectives, methods, and questions that continue to define this evolving field. Contributions by researchers are put in dialogue with one another, offering an exemplary analysis of a field that synthesizes, in situ, various scholarly traditions and orientations to create a critical and heterogenous understanding of learning.
Miwa is one of the leading young Japanese scholars debunking the myths - all too common in the west but eagerly promoted in Japan also - about the distinctive Japanese way. He soberly examines the roles of government and banks, firms and networks, workers and managers. The result is a fine analysis of how where and why the Japanese economic system fundamentally resembles that in the west, with a clear explanation of the few areas where it significantly differs.' - Leslie Hannah, London School of Economics and Political Science; Professor Miwa has earned quite a name for himself in Japan for his brilliant but biting iconoclastic views. Now, Western readers will learn what the fuss has been about. Self-styled authorities on the Japanese economy will squirm, for Miwa takes no prisoners; his logic is relentless, merciless and - inevitably - right.' - J.Mark Ramseyer, the University of Chicago Law School; This is a monumental work, demystifying the Japanese economy and contesting the conventional view that Japan is different'. In doing so, Professor Miwa paves the way for a new era of comparative study.' - Kazuo Koike, Hosei University, Tokyo; Professor Miwa, no longer an enfant terri
This book is the result of an international comparative study of corporate governance begun in 2002, and provides analysis of the issue as it applies to management, moral hazards, accounting practices, and the institutional investor from both a Japanese and a global perspective. The study presents a view of the company as an entity that not only maximizes profit for stockholders but that also has a social role to play in maintaining a sustainable society.

Several years have passed since the 'store wars' over barriers to foreign products at Japanese distribution firms. Yet among English-speaking readers, how these firms operate remains a puzzle. In this book, the best Japanese scholars in their fields attempt to unravel that puzzle. Avoiding culture-based explanations, they employ a systematic and rigorous economic logic---yet, since they also avoid mathematical notation, the argument remains accessible to generalist readers.
China has become an enthusiastic supporter of and contributor to UN peacekeeping. Is China s participation in peacekeeping likely to strengthen the current international peacekeeping regime by China s adopting of the international norms of peacekeeping? Or, on the contrary, is it likely to alter the peacekeeping norms in a way that aligns with its own worldview? And, as China s international confidence grows, will it begin to consider peacekeeping a smaller and lesser part of its international security activity, and thus not care so much about it? This book aims to address these questions by examining how the PRC has developed its peacekeeping policy and practices in relation to its international status. It does so by bringing in both historical and conceptual analyses and specific case-oriented discussions of China s peacekeeping over the past twenty years. The book identifies the various challenges that China has faced at political, conceptual and operational levels and the ways in which the country has dealt with those challenges, and considers the implication of such challenges with regards to the future of international peacekeeping. This book was originally published as a special issue of International Peacekeeping.
Yoshiro Miwa asks whether a state can correct market failures and in particular critically analyses the performance of the Japanese economy as a result of state intervention within it. In order to examine the capacity of the state to promote growth, Miwa examines the Japanese machine tool industry, the government's role in promoting this sector and government efforts to achieve growth in small and medium sized enterprises in Japan.

Within economics, few issues are more central than the role of the state in the economy; within Japanese studies, few are more central than the role the Japanese government has played in post-war economic growth. With exquisite attention to theory and meticulous attention to detail, this book focuses on both these topics with startling results. Despite the huge interest worldwide in Japan's economic history and industrial performance, there is no other book that has approached this important topic in such a comprehensive and incisive manner.
In this book, crafters can make adorable birds, including popular parakeets and parrots, or an easily made, wearable brooch.
Proceedings of the 13th International Symposium of The Princess Takamatsu Cancer Research Fund, held in Tokyo The proceedings deal with the potential relevance of ADP-ribosylation reactions in the genesis, prevention and treatment of cancer. These reactions were independently discovered in the laboratories of Paul Mandel, Osamu Hayaishi and Takashi Sugimura, all whom contribute to ADP-Ribosylation, DNA Repair and Cancer. Apart from these renowned scientists, many other outstanding researchers from the international research community have contributed chapters discussing their most recent research results.
This book aims to provide the latest research findings, innovative research results, methods and development techniques from both theoretical and practical perspectives related to intelligent social networks and collaborative systems, intelligent networking systems, mobile collaborative systems, secure intelligent cloud systems, etc., as well as to reveal synergies among various paradigms in such a multi-disciplinary field intelligent collaborative systems. With the fast development of the Internet, we are experiencing a shift from the traditional sharing of information and applications as the main purpose of the Web to an emergent paradigm, which locates people at the very centre of networks and exploits the value of people's connections, relations and collaboration. Social networks are also playing a major role in the dynamics and structure of intelligent Web-based networking and collaborative systems. Virtual campuses, virtual communities and organizations strongly leverage intelligent networking and collaborative systems by a great variety of formal and informal electronic relations, such as business-to-business, peer-to-peer and many types of online collaborative learning interactions, including the emerging e-learning systems. This has resulted in entangled systems that need to be managed efficiently and in an autonomous way. In addition, latest and powerful technologies based on grid and wireless infrastructure as well as cloud computing are currently enhancing collaborative and networking applications as a great deal but also facing new issues and challenges. The principal purpose of the research and development community is to stimulate research that will lead to the creation of responsive environments for networking and, at longer-term, the development of adaptive, secure, mobile and intuitive intelligent systems for collaborative work and learning.

This book was first published in 1999 and investigates the high degree of symmetry that lies hidden in integrable systems. To that end, differential equations arising from classical mechanics, such as the KdV equation and the KP equations, are used here by the authors to introduce the notion of an infinite dimensional transformation group acting on spaces of integrable systems. The work of M. Sato on the algebraic structure of completely integrable systems is discussed, together with developments of these ideas in the work of M. Kashiwara. This book should be accessible to anyone with a knowledge of differential and integral calculus and elementary complex analysis, and it will be a valuable resource to the novice and expert alike.
'MathPhys Odyssey 2001' will serve as an excellent reference text for mathematical physicists and graduate students in a number of areas.; Kashiwara/Miwa have a good track record with both SV and Birkhauser.
