This book covers the applications of fungi used in biorefinery
technology. As a great many different varieties of fungal species
are available, the text focuses on the various applications of
fungi for production of useful products including organic acids
(lactic, citric, fumaric); hydrolytic enzymes (amylase, cellulases,
xylanases, ligninases, lipases, pectinases, proteases); advanced
biofuels (ethanol, single cell oils); polyols (xylitol); single
cell protein (animal feed); secondary metabolites; and much more.

Filamentous Fungi Biorefinery, the latest release in the Current
Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering series, builds on
knowledge on the classification of filamentous fungi and presence
and roles played in ecosystems. The importance of filamentous fungi
is then further corroborated through a description of their present
applications in biotechnological processes. Knowledge on fungal
biology is extended through discussion on structure and composition
together with a description of growth potentialities of filamentous
fungi in/on a wide range of substrates. In addition, the morphology
of filamentous fungi is then described and its implications during
integration in industrial processes is discussed. The book then
provides an overview on the use of filamentous fungi for the
production of a wide range of value-added products, including feed
and food products, alcohols, organic acids, pigments, enzymes,
antibiotics and biopolymers. All provided state-of-arts are
extended to a description of the present degree of application of
filamentous fungi towards the production of those products using
low-value substrates, identification of research gaps, and proposes
future research avenues.
Advances in Bioprocess Engineering, the latest release in the
Current Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering series,
provides a comprehensive overview of bioprocess systems, kinetics,
bioreactor design, batch and continuous reactors and introduces key
principles that enable bioprocess engineers to engage in analysis,
optimization and design with consistent control over biological and
chemical transformations. The bioprocessing sector is also updating
its technologies with state-of-the art techniques to keep up with
the rising demand of the industry and R&D. This book covers
these aspects, taking readers through a step-by-step journey of
bioprocessing while also guiding them towards a new era and future.
Circular Bioeconomy: Technologies for Waste Remediation covers
information about the strategies and approaches facilitating the
integration of technologies for wastewater and solid waste
remediation. The book highlights the models developed to valorize
wastes to produce biobased products. Various chapters presented in
the book put a focus on sustainability approaches as a central
theme in order to facilitate industries and policymakers to adopt
circular economy goals. Since the principal idea of a circular
bioeconomy is to transition from a linear economy, it involves
advanced technological and designing breakthroughs to reduce waste
with a closed looped system.
Current Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering:
Sustainable Food Waste Management: Resource Recovery and Treatment
covers the latest methods of food waste management and resource
recovery from a sustainability perspective and is suitable for
universities, municipalities, and companies working in the field.
This book provides a comprehensive account of food waste chemistry,
the latest techniques for food waste treatment and recycling,
sustainability assessment (social, economic, environmental), and
challenges in food waste management. The book explores recycling to
value-added products using sustainable concepts and methodologies,
and is useful as a course or reference book for biochemical
engineering, environmental sustainability, and waste management.
Sustainable Resource Recovery and Zero Waste Approaches covers
waste reduction, biological, thermal and recycling methods of waste
recovery, and their conversion into a variety of products. In
addition, the social, economic and environmental aspects are also
explored, making this a useful textbook for environmental courses
and a reference book for both universities and companies.
Industrial Biorefineries and White Biotechnology provides a
comprehensive look at the increasing focus on developing the
processes and technologies needed for the conversion of biomass to
liquid and gaseous fuels and chemicals, in particular, the
development of low-cost technologies. During the last 3-4 years,
there have been scientific and technological developments in the
area; this book represents the most updated information and
technological perspective on the topic.
