Infectious disease outbreaks result in mortality or morbidity of
many humans and wild and domestic animals and plants. Many a time
that leads to large-scale economic and socio-cultural losses.
However, exposure to pathogens does not always lead to infections
or the spread of diseases since diverse factors are involved in the
manifestation of diseases. The infectious organisms that cause
diseases and the host are a part of the multidimensional
biodiversity and a quintessential part of the ecological web.
Hence, a manifestation of an infectious disease is through a chain
of events that favor high contact of the pathogenic species with
the host species, directly or indirectly, or through intermediate
hosts/vectors. This context makes it important to recognize that
preservation of natural habitats possibly has a direct bearing on
public health since habitats with high biological diversity have
the potential for checks and balances of population growth and
could curtail disease transmission and the manifestation of
diseases in many a case. Besides, diverse and heterogeneous (and
largely anthropogenic) issues such as rapid urbanization, sprawling
inroads into natural habitats, increasing human-animal conflicts,
decreasing environmental quality, languid waste disposal systems,
rising contamination/pollution of the natural systems, increasingly
unwholesome lifestyle, etc. makes the condition much more complex.
This book addresses human diseases from a wider and holistic
perspective, especially looking at morbidity from an ecological
viewpoint. It also looks at infections from an evolutionary
perspective. These perspectives, although known, are largely
neglected in healthcare systems in vogue. Such a perspective would
be an eye-opener for the healthcare providers, and the public at
the receiving end of the increasingly expensive healthcare
services.
The allocation of resources in international universities to adopt
and institutionalize solutions must be prioritized above obsolete
or wasteful practices. Changing economic and social cultures
necessitate new and advancing educational strategies for the
promotion of graduate student success. Advancing Innovation and
Sustainable Outcomes in International Graduate Education is a
critical scholarly resource that examines the impact of such
drivers as technology and the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the
need for a new approach to learning that directly impacts the
teaching-learning process. Among the drivers that the book examines
are the need for higher order and critical thinking, the need for
developing cognitive and emotional intelligence with fluid
intelligence enabling broad interdisciplinary thinking and wisdom,
and the shifting values of millennials concerning the need for new
approaches to education and attitudes to work. Underpinning the
theme and chapters of this book is the need for ecosystemic
thinking for sustainability framed from consciousness-based
education. Featuring a wide range of topics such as data analytics,
emotional intelligence, and workplace innovation, this book is
ideal for educators, researchers, policymakers, curriculum
designers, administrators, managers, academicians, and students.
This book offers a unique collection of inter- and
multidisciplinary studies on river systems. Rivers have been the
prime source of sustenance since the advent of civilization and
river systems often form the basis for agriculture, transport,
water, and land for domestic, commercial, and industrial
activities, fostering economic prosperity. A river basin is a basic
geographical and climatological unit within which the vagaries of
natural processes act and manifest themselves at different
spatio-temporal scales. Even if compared side-by-side, no two river
basins respond to natural processes in the same way and thus, it
has long been recognized that each river basin is unique. Hence,
any developmental activity or conservation effort has to be
designed and implemented to match each unique river basin. With the
burgeoning population and increasing dependency on natural
resources, understanding and maintaining river systems has become
increasingly important. This book provides a varied reference work
on and unprecedented guidelines for conducting and implementing
research on river basins, and for managing their ecological
development.
This unique collection brings together various scholars of
sociology and political science to explore the status and
activities of the intellectuals and the intelligentsia past,
present and future. The intellectuals and intelligentsia perform a
social role as well as a mental function and are products of their
age and country. Their role in various parts of the globe and in
different historical periods is compared and contrasted. Long-range
historical perspective is provided by an essay on the sociology of
intellectual creativity in the axial period of human history. In
addition, the role of the intellectual and intelligentsia and its
implications for the future development of Third World nations is
considered.
Broiler Chickens is a short practical book of guidelines and advice
to good welfare practice in broiler chicken farming. With
contributions from world expert researchers in poultry welfare,
this book distils academic research into applied advice on the farm
for industry and farm workers. The content covered includes health
and disease impacts with a One Health focus, housing for optimal
health, broiler breeders, hatchery management, broiler slaughter
practices, transport, animal welfare assessment measures and a
discussion of welfare improvement measures on the farm.
This book will serve as a valuable source of information on the
aspects of history, current scenario, non-mulberry cultivation,
pruning, pests and diseases of eri, tasar and muga, silkworm
rearing, pests and diseases of non-mulberry silkworm, processing of
cocoon etc. This book can be used as resource material and
practical guide for the students of agriculture, horticulture and
sericulture. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the Hardback
in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The welfare of production animals at slaughter is a major
veterinary concern with debate on questions such as the degree of
stunning required, how sentient animals are of their surroundings,
slaughterhouse conditions and how quickly animals lose
consciousness after having their throats cut in religious slaughter
practices. This research monograph provides a thoroughly scientific
evidence-based account of the physiology and behaviour of animals
for slaughter, analysis of the different killing methods,
legislation and operating procedures, lairage and movement,
depopulation and handling.Animal Welfare at Slaughter is mainly
aimed at animal welfare officers and policy makers, veterinary and
meat inspectors and slaughterhouse auditors. However, this is a
reliable resource also for veterinary and animal science students
and the informed public.
