Geza Vermes is a household name within the study of the historical
Jesus, and his work is associated with a significant change within
mainstream Jesus research, typically labelled 'the third quest'.
Since the publication of Jesus the Jew in 1973, many notable Jesus
scholars have interacted with Vermes's ideas and suggestions, yet
their assessments have so far remained brief and ambiguous. Hilde
Brekke Moller explores the true impact of Vermes's Jesus research
on the perceived change within Jesus research in the 1980s, and
also within third quest Jesus research, by examining Vermes's work
and the reception of his work by numerous Jesus scholars. Moller
looks in particular depth at the Jewishness of Jesus, the
Son-of-Man problem, and Vermes's suggestion that Jesus was a Hasid,
all being aspects of Vermes's work which have attracted the most
scholarly attention. Moller's research-historical approach focuses
not only on the leading scholars of the field such as E.P. Sanders,
J.D. Crossan, J.P. Meier and C.A. Evans, but also sheds light on
underplayed aspects of previous research, and responds to the state
of affairs for recent research by challenging the rhetoric of
current historical Jesus scholarship.

This book presents a thorough study and an up to date anthology of
Plato's Protagoras. International authors' papers contribute to the
task of understanding how Plato introduced and negotiated a new
type of intellectual practice - called philosophy - and the
strategies that this involved. They explore Plato's dialogue,
looking at questions of how philosophy and sophistry relate, both
on a methodological and on a thematic level. While many of the
contributing authors argue for a sharp distinction between
sophistry and philosophy, this is contested by others. Readers may
consider the distinctions between philosophy and traditional forms
of poetry and sophistry through these papers. Questions for
readers' attention include: To what extent is Socrates' preferred
mode of discourse, and his short questions and answers, superior to
Protagoras' method of sophistic teaching? And why does Plato make
Socrates and Protagoras reverse positions as it comes to virtue and
its teachability? This book will appeal to graduates and
researchers with an interest in the origins of philosophy,
classical philosophy and historical philosophy.
This thoroughly class tested text and online tutorial gives a
complete introduction to the essentials of the XML standard. It

This book contributes to current theory building within applied
linguistics and sociolinguistics by looking at the role of language
in the lives, realities, and understandings of real children and
youth in an urban setting. Collectively the studies amount to a
comprehensive account of how urban children and youth construct,
reactivate, negotiate, contest, and navigate between different
linguistic and sociocultural norms and resources.
In this second rich and original volume from the Scripture and

philosophy and theology of language are assessed and updated for
biblical interpretation. From Paternoster. CONTRIBUTORS INCLUDE:

This reference is designed for scientists and engineers in the
field, and also suitable for students of semiconductor physics,
materials science and solar technology. It provides an
understanding of the fundamental problems underlying the
relationship between physics, materials science and technology
aspects of solar cell development. It bridges the gap between
materials science and device design for solar cells.
Published to mark the 200th anniversary of Dickens's birth, this
book celebrates the greatest of English novelists by illustrating
some of his abiding preoccupations. Prompted by quotations from the
novels and other writings, each themed chapter explores
contemporary images relating to salient topics of the Victorian age
such as the public entertainments of London and the domestic
pastimes of its inhabitants; the coming of the railways (which were
to transform Victorian England in fiction and in fact); school life
for children, and conditions in the workhouses and prisons which
loom so large in many of the novels and which blighted Dickens's
own childhood. Dickens was an incorrigible showman, and this book
also explores his role as actor-manager of theatrical productions,
as originator of the myriad stage adaptations of his books, and as
supreme interpreter of them himself in the public readings which
came to dominate his later years. Reproducing key extracts from the
novels alongside a selection of the original covers as they
appeared weekly and monthly in the bookshops, their crucial
illustrations and all the paraphernalia of nineteenth-century
advertising, is a unique approach which breathes life into the
vibrant world of Dickens and his characters.
The world of education is being radically altered with the change
being driven by technology, openness, and unprecedented access to
knowledge. Older correspondence-style methods of instructional
delivery are passe and "classroom adapted to the web" approaches to
learning are often ineffective and do little to harness the
transformational potential of technology. E-Learning scenarios,
mobile technologies, communication and information access, and
personal learning environmentsare becoming mainstream and, as a
result, control of the learning process is shifting away from
institutions and into the hands of learners. This volumes promotes
a forward-thinking agenda for research and scholarship that
highlights new ideas, deep insights, and novel approaches to
"unconstrained" learning.
