Except for the lone policeman who paused beneath the arc light at
the Front Street intersection to make an entry in his patrol book,
Bay Street was deserted. The fog which had come crawling in from
the lake had filled the lower streets and was feeling its way
steadily through the sleeping city, blurring the street lights. Its
clammy touch darkened the stone facades of tall, silent buildings
and left tiny wet beads on iron railing and grill work. Down
towards the waterfront a yard-engine coughed and clanked about in
the mist somewhere, noisily kicking together a string of box-cars,
while at regular intervals the fog-horn over at the Eastern Gap
bellowed mournfully into the night. After tucking away his book and
rebuttoning his tunic the policeman lingered on the corner for a
moment in the manner of one who has nothing to do and no place to
go. He was preparing to saunter on when footfalls began to echo in
the emptiness of the street and presently the figure of a young man
grew out of the gray vapor-a young man who was swinging down
towards the docks with the easy stride of an athlete.

To the rimming skyline, and beyond, the wheatlands of Assiniboia 1]
spread endlessly in the sunshine. It was early October in the year
1901-one of those clear bright days which contribute enchantment to
that season of spun gold when harvest bounties are garnered on the
Canadian prairies. Everywhere was the gleam of new yellow stubble.
In serried ranks the wheat stocks stretched, dwindling to mere
specks, merging as they lost identity in distance. Here and there
stripes of plowed land elongated, the rich black freshly turned
earth in sharp contrast to the prevailing gold, while in a
tremendous deep blue arch overhead an unclouded sky swept to cup
the circumference of vision.

'The infantry is only a few metres ahead of us when suddenly, on
the left of our tank, a Russian stands up. The swine had pretended
to be dead when our infantry came past him! That's an old classic,
pretending to be dead and then firing from the rear. But that isn't
a good idea when facing tank-men like us... floor the accelerator!
Turn left and run over him! 'An utterly gripping first-hand German
account of the war on the Eastern Front.' - Dan Snow "Unvarnished,
absorbing, gritty and pulling no punches. One of the best accounts
of war on the Eastern Front I have ever read." - Peter
Caddick-Adams "An erudite, well-written, thoughtful account of the
harsh realities of combat on the Eastern Front in World War Two" -
Roger Moorhouse The war on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945 was
the bloodiest combat theatre in the bloodiest war in history.
Oberleutnant Friedrich Wilhelm Sander experienced this bloodshed
first-hand when serving with the 11th Panzer-Regiment. This
regiment made up the core of the 6th Panzer-Division, one of
Hitler's top armoured formations, which was involved in most of the
major campaigns on the Eastern Front; campaigns such as Operation
Barbarossa and Operation Winter Storm. Sander recorded his
experience of these campaigns in astounding detail in some
recently-discovered diaries covering the period from April 1938 to
December 1943, translated here for the first time by historian
Robin Schafer. Written during the fighting, these diaries not only
offer an honest assessment of the war on the Eastern Front, but
also provide an insight into the mind of a young and highly
politicised officer, and offer an intimate glimpse into the
close-knit community of a German Panzer crew. A brutally honest,
immediate and unfiltered personal account, Sander's translated
diaries make for some uniquely fascinating reading about some of
the most important campaigns of the Second World War. Supported by
more than 100 photographs and maps from the period, Blood, Dust
& Snow will be of great interest not only to readers studying
the war on the Eastern Front, but also to any historian researching
the Second World War.
The chapters of this volume apply the tools of public choice theory
to the types of questions which economic historians have
traditionally addressed. By adding the insights of public choice
economists to the traditional tools used to understand economic
actors and institutions, the authors are able to provide fresh
insights about many important issues of American history. Each
contribution analyzes an episode in American economic history
within a public choice framework of rational maximization. Agents
or interest groups are interpreted as either responding in
predictable ways to economic incentives put in play by government
policy or attempting to influence government policy. Public Choice
Interpretations of American Economic History includes eight essays
that examine: Why states contributed to the national government
under the Articles of Confederation. The major nineteenth-century
transitions in the source of state revenues away from fees and
investments and toward the property tax, and from state to local
government funding of infrastructure. Three economic failures from
the American West in the late nineteenth and early twentieth
century: overgrazing of the northern plains, despoliation of the
Yellowstone Basin, and low productivity of Indian communal lands.
The impact on trusts of state-level anti-trust activities and the
passage of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The economic and political
determinants of state-level WPA spending by the federal government
during the New Deal. Why New Deal agricultural policies under the
AAA were politically successful, while industrial policies under
the NRA were scrapped. The Interaction between Fed policies and
banks' decisions about membership inthe Federal Reserve System in
the period 1921-79. The influence of diversity among voters on
states' decisions about how to regulate alcohol consumption in the
decades after the end of prohibition.
Exploring the enormous upheaval caused by the English
Reformation and the Dissolution of the Monasteries, this vivid new
history draws on long-forgotten material from the recesses of one
of the world's greatest cathedrals--the great Benedictine Durham
Priory, now the Anglican Durham Cathedral. Once a bastion of the
Benedictine monks in the north of England, the Priory was dissolved
after nearly 500 years on the orders of King Henry VIII in 1539, in
his quest to separate the church in England from its headquarters
in Rome. This illuminating guide to religious history and its
social and political contexts, seen through the arches of one of
England's most celebrated cathedrals, examines the devastating
economic and spiritual consequences of the Dissolution, revealing
how one of history's most effective and chilling apparatus of
plunder and ruin erased the orders of monks and nuns that had
served some 650 monastic religious houses in England and Wales.
Something was approaching the burrow. Something deadly. Something
that made Sylvan's fur bristle with fear . . . Knowing their lives
are under threat, Sylvan and his brother and sisters have no choice
but to abandon their burrow for ever. Together they set out on an
epic journey along the Great River; but with dangers lurking at
every turn, will they ever find a safe place to call home? Now
available in paperback, this exciting and beautifully-illustrated
animal adventure has the makings of a future children's classic.

This book equips pre-service teachers, research postgraduate
students, teacher educators, and language specialists with specific
knowledge and skills about the principles, research, and
applications of digital portfolios within the EFL writing contexts.
While most digital portfolio scholarship focuses on higher
education, this book targets primary-level and secondary-level
school audiences, namely pre-service teachers, teacher educators,
and Ministry of Education staff members with a focus on EFL
writing. The rationale behind this design is that the published
literature on digital portfolios tends to be generic and
one-size-fits-all; there has been scant published scholarship about
the development of digital portfolio literacy among teachers and
pupils, which could enable them to upgrade the teaching and
learning of writing in a larger EFL environment. This volume fills
this gap by illustrating the why, what, and how aspects of digital
portfolios in ten reader-friendly chapters. Guiding educators to
enrich their pedagogical repertoire via the portfolio approach,
this book emphasises a healthy balance between principles,
research, and practice. It is an easy-to-follow guide to setting up
digital portfolio systems and coaching pupils to improve writing,
ensuring the dissemination of digital portfolios with high
fidelity.
Originally published in 1981 Law, State and Society confronts many
of the most important issues within the developing field of law and
society. The essays cover the key political debates and the subject
of the sociology of law through two key debates, the first tackling
the wider theoretical and political system, while the other essays
are concerned with more concrete aspects of both the political and
social face of law. Together, the essays show how crucial the
potential is that exists for a considerable extension and
integration of work that focuses explicitly on empirical problems,
yet is at the same time more conscious of the theoretical issues
that underpin the effectivity of law.
In this important new and controversial study about the nature and
focus of the Japanese economic agenda, the author argues forcefully
that the official mind-set of leading bureaucrats, top politicians
and big business, makes it virtually impossible for the western
industrialized world to do business on an equal footing. Put
simply, it is a question of western free-market economics facing
Japanese economic nationalism, which is, by its very nature, both
an expansive and a protectionist ideology. International observers
continue to ask is Japan changing?' or more forcefully, is Japan
capable of change?'. Notions of reform' and restructuring' are
today part of the Japanese lexicon, but appear to hold little
substance. Trevor argues that any western notion of Japan changing
fundamentally (i.e. adopting western, or Anglo-Saxon, philosophies)
is facile completely unrealistic. This book is for everyone who
wonders what motivates Japan's politico-economic system, and
whether it is changing.
The Jehovah's Witnesses endured intense persecution under the Nazi
regime, from 1933 to 1945. Unlike the Jews and others persecuted
and killed by virtue of their birth, Jehovah's Witnesses had the
opportunity to escape persecution and personal harm by renouncing
their religious beliefs. The vast majority refused and throughout
their struggle, continued to meet, preach, and distribute
literature. In the face of torture, maltreatment in concentration
camps, and sometimes execution, this unique group won the respect
of many contemporaries. Up until now, little has been known of
their particular persecution.
