This work is a contribution to the theoretical and empirical analysis of globalization and political globalization in particular. Developing an analytical approach to political globalization centered on the uneven globalization of statehood in a societal perspective, Morten Ougaard employs this approach in empirical analysis of the global polity. Central themes are the emerging state function of persistence towards the increasingly integrated world society, relations of power between states and social forces and the prospects and realities of transnational class formation.

Morten Ougaard provides a new and distinct theoretical perspective to the analysis of the globalization of politics. The book analyzes global governance as the partial and uneven globalization of different aspects of statehood. It focuses on the institutional infrastructure, highlighting the role of the G7/OECD nexus in providing strategic leadership; discusses an emerging global function of societal persistence or public goods; governance and relations of power between social forces; and finally it discusses American hegemonic leadership in the light of the dual power/persistence perspective.

While 'one world government' is not on the cards, the globalisation of political life has progressed significantly over the last few decades. Rather than adding on to existing theoretical frameworks such as the realist picture of international anarchy or the English School's "international society", this volume starts out from the idea of the world as one interconnected political system and explores ways and perspectives to analyse it as such.
The contributors examine central aspects of this emerging global polity such as the role of law, of networks and of civil society. They discuss key theoretical and meta-theoretical questions on how to analyse and theorise the global polity, what drives it forward, and whether it can be democratised.
