The essays in this collection are based on papers originally presented at the sixth meeting of the European-American Consortium for Legal Education, held at the University of Helsinki, Finland in May, 2007. EACLE is a transatlantic consortium of law faculties dedicated to co- eration and to the exchange of ideas between different legal systems and cultures. Each year the EACLE colloquium considers a speci?c legal qu- tion from a variety of national perspectives. The 2007 initiative on "The Internationalization of Law and Legal Education" was coordinated by the staff of the University of Helsinki Faculty of Law and the Academy of F- land Centre of Excellence in Global Governance Research. We would like to thank those who attended the 2007 meeting for their insightful remarks, and for their inspiration, suggestions, and encouragement in making this volume and the EACLE consortium so effective in fostering greater trans- lantic cooperation on law and legal education. Autonomy in the Law considers one of the most important benefits of the rule of law. Juxtaposing European and American conceptions of autonomy in the law of families, capital punishment and, criminal trials reveals the common values that justify all legal systems. Law protects the autonomy of individuals and associations by defending the boundaries of their own self-rule. This book illuminates the fundamental purpose of law by examining how European and American lawyers, judges and citizens do and should apply legal autonomy to the practical circumstances of litigation, legislation and the law.

The end of the Cold War has allowed for the prospect of a New World
Order, in which the United Nations and other 'international actors'
may return to their post-war mandate of maintaining international
peace and security through collective action. This book addresses
the central question of sovereignty under the new regime: which
internal actions of states will justify intervention by the
international community? The unifying theme of these chapters --
written from a wide variety of national and cultural perspectives
-- is the conflict between cultural relativism and human rights in
the postmodern world. Eleven authors address these questions to
determine the meaning and limits of national self-determination
after the fall of communism.
This book considers the ethical basis of fundamental university policies, with special emphasis on how issues of community and diversity influence education. Students, faculty and administrators must seek to maintain a sense of community as diversity increasingly characterizes university campuses. This raises four central questions which are addressed in this volume: what should the aims of universities be, given their changed demography?; how should university curricula reflect multicultural society; does the new environment require special treatment of campus speech?; and what role should affirmative action play in promoting diversity or community in the academy?

The contributors approach academic ethics from very diverse institutional roles and ideological positions, and this provides a broad and provocative basis for classroom and institutional discussion of the aims of the university, the curriculum, campus speech and affirmative action. These essays will help to give pluralism meaning and establish the common purpose and community of good will that make academic discourse possible.
