Maroussia Hajdukowski-Ahmed is a Professor at McMaster University who teaches in the French Department, the Women's Studies Program, and at the Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition. As a principal investigator of the McMaster Research Centre for the Promotion of Women's Health, she conducted studies with immigrant and refugee women, co-authored Women's Voices in Health Promotion and published essays on dialogism, participatory research, culture and mental health, and on exilic women's narratives.

Nazilla Khanlou is Associate Professor at the LSB Faculty of Nursing and Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, and is the upcoming inaugural Ontario Women's Health Council Chair in Women's Mental Health Research at York University. She has received major peer-reviewed grants from federal and provincial research funding agencies, and conducted policy informing research (Status of Women Canada). She has published numerous articles, books, and reports on youth, immigrant health, and mental health promotion.

Helene Moussa has had extensive experience as an educator, researcher, and administrator, as well as in policy and organizational development, networking, and advocacy. Her last position before her retirement was with the World Council of Churches, Geneva, Switzerland as executive secretary for uprooted people with regional responsibilities with partners in the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific."

The present book contains fourteen expository contributions on various topics connected to Number Theory, or Arithmetics, and its relationships to Theoreti cal Physics. The first part is mathematically oriented; it deals mostly with ellip tic curves, modular forms, zeta functions, Galois theory, Riemann surfaces, and p-adic analysis. The second part reports on matters with more direct physical interest, such as periodic and quasiperiodic lattices, or classical and quantum dynamical systems. The contribution of each author represents a short self-contained course on a specific subject. With very few prerequisites, the reader is offered a didactic exposition, which follows the author's original viewpoints, and often incorpo rates the most recent developments. As we shall explain below, there are strong relationships between the different chapters, even though every single contri bution can be read independently of the others. This volume originates in a meeting entitled Number Theory and Physics, which took place at the Centre de Physique, Les Houches (Haute-Savoie, France), on March 7 - 16, 1989. The aim of this interdisciplinary meeting was to gather physicists and mathematicians, and to give to members of both com munities the opportunity of exchanging ideas, and to benefit from each other's specific knowledge, in the area of Number Theory, and of its applications to the physical sciences. A contest is afoot in Muslim discourses around the world in the twenty-first century. Prevalent norms and acts are subject to competing motivations, trends and forces. The image of a monolithic Islam is thus wholly inadequate to identify and interpret the different expressions of Muslim thought and practice in their specific yet connected contexts. This book proposes competing and persuasive perspectives for interpreting what Muslims say, do and think in collective settings or in the light of common frames of reference. The chapters contained in this book reflect a diversity of disciplines and interests. Nonetheless, a common thread of the preoccupation with meanings in context unites the contributors and the approaches to their chosen examples. Islam is not a discrete category that is taken for granted. Instead, the cacophony of voices in the Muslim world situated in specific contexts, variously national, regional or global, is allowed to inform each chapter. Here one encounters contemporary Muslims participating in discourses with a contested character that create opportunities to augment or question orthodox dictates or transmit or alter existing beliefs and practices. What emerges are nuanced portraits of contemporary Muslim thought and practice that reveal a far from monolithic Islam to which all things Islamic can be reduced.

Shaykh Moussa Kamara was one of the most prolific writers of the 20th century. His scholarship spanned many disciplines, including human civilizations, the ethnography of Sudanic Africa, theology, and poetry. His objection to jihad is one of his most pertinent works. As provided in this English translation and commentary, It expounds upon the futility of waging Jih�d bis-Sayf since it could not be conducted without killing other Muslims or innocent civilians of any persuasion. By its violent nature, jihad breaches one of Islam's main principles which is preserving life. To support this argument, Kamara draws evidence from Prophet Muhammad’s social life, the bloody legacy of jihad among his companions after his death, the opinions of pious scholars and Sufi saints on the subject as well as his lived-experience of the economic devastation caused by the jihadists, or Pseudo-Jihadists to use his own words, of his time. Kamara goes further to showcase that, if self-defense in the name of Jihad is a must, then there have to be a balance of power with the enemy, a unified leadership among the Muslims, and a legitimate leader who can authorize waging jihad.
